Elaborate Hollywood Saddlery Tooled Western Style Leather Holster with Cartridge Belt and Engraved Sterling Silver Buckle

Lot 328: Elaborate Hollywood Saddlery Tooled Western Style Leather Holster with Cartridge Belt and Engraved Sterling Silver Buckle

by Rock Island Auction Company

April 24, 2015, 9:00 AM CST

Rock Island, IL, USA

Estimated Price: $3,500 - $5,000

Description: Elaborate Hollywood Saddlery Tooled Western Style Leather Holster with Cartridge Belt and Engraved Sterling Silver Buckle Produced by Hollywood Saddlery, of Los Angeles, California. This manufacturer was known for their fine craftsmanship, and great artists, many from the famous Ed Bohlin leather studio. This particular belt and holster are a dark brown, with extensive floral and leaf tooling, and punch dot backgrounds. The belt has loops for thirty rounds of .45 caliber ammunition. The holster itself has a single strap and buckle, and a hammer loop. All buckles and fittings are sterling silver, and intricately engraved with the complex geometric and floral designs common in American Western art and silver work. The buckles are also engraved with a monogrammed "G" in the center. The holster has a stylized eagle carved on the back, with the initials "F.D.G." this mark is above a flower carved in a similar manner. Cartridge loops are filled with silver colored .45 caliber dummy rounds. An all around fine example of 1930's Southern California leather work. Manufacturer: None Model: None BBL: Stock: Gauge: Finish: Grips: Serial Number: Class: Other Condition: Fine overall, the tooled embellishment is masterfully executed. The belt and holster do display some light age cracking overall, with some edge scuffing and color loss. The leather is still quite supple and flexible. Fittings are very good, with strong engravings and some darker patina, common on sterling silver items.

Historic Theodore Roosevelt Presentation Inscribed Western Saddle with Research

Lot 1295: Historic Theodore Roosevelt Presentation Inscribed Western Saddle with Research

by Rock Island Auction Company

April 25, 2015, 9:00 AM CST

Rock Island, IL, USA

Estimated Price: $20,000 - $30,000

Description: Historic Theodore Roosevelt Presentation Inscribed Western Saddle with Research The pommel plate of this 19th century style leather western saddle is inscribed "Presented/to/LT. COL. T. ROOSEVELT/1st U.S. Vol. Cav./by/the Rough Riders/1898". There are no other visible markings on the saddle, but the materials and style are appropriate to the late 19th century. The leather is tooled around the edges. It includes iron stirrups with straps. The included documentation indicates that the saddle was originally presented to Roosevelt by his fellow Rough Riders and then given to "The First Cowgirl" Lucille Mulhall by Roosevelt along with a Winchester Model 1873 after she impressed Roosevelt with her roping and riding skills and presented him with the pelt of a wolf which had previously eluded Roosevelt while he was riding with the young lady on her father's ranch in Oklahoma. Roosevelt hung the pelt in the White House. Her father helped Lucille launch her career after being encouraged by Roosevelt. Among her accomplishments were appearances in western films and wild west shows throughout the U.S. and even abroad. In one display of her talents, she is recorded as having roped three steers in just over three and half minutes; she was just eighteen at the time, and the event led to her being dubbed the "Queen of the Range." Included in the research binder is a letter from Ann Mulhall Robinson indicating that her Great "Aunt Lucille was named, 'The First Cowgirl' by Mr. Roosevelt" and that the saddle had been kept in the family for many years. The letter indicates she, as the last survivor of the family, sold the saddle for an undisclosed sum. Manufacturer: None Model: None BBL: Stock: Gauge: Finish: Grips: Serial Number: Class: Other Condition: Fine. The saddle is in very good condition for its age. There are some minor cracks and general wear in the leather and the canvas lining is stained, well worn, and slightly torn in some areas. The stirrups have bright oxidation. The inscription plate is crisply and clearly marked. Overall, a very interesting piece of Western and Presidential history.

Gerard Dillon (1916 - 1971) Aran Woman and Child Oil on board, 38 x 28cm (1

Lot 77: Gerard Dillon (1916 - 1971) Aran Woman and Child Oil on board, 38 x 28cm (1

by Adam's

April 1, 2015, 6:00 PM GMT

Dublin, Ireland

Estimated Price: €6,000 - €8,000

Description: Gerard Dillon (1916 - 1971) Aran Woman and Child Oil on board, 38 x 28cm (15 x 11'') Signed Living in Dublin during the War, Dillon frequented the Country Shop, where he held his first solo exhibition in 1942, opened by Mainie Jellett. The artist would have seen Aran scenes by Elizabeth Rivers and Basil Rákóczi, which may have prompted him to travel to the area sometime towards the end of summer, 1944. Dillon's fascination for the West of Ireland began years earlier when he saw Sean Keating's illustrations for The Playboy of The Western World, which he claimed were the first things that made him want to paint. A label on the reverse of this work suggests the painting was executed in 1942 but we know that Dillon didn't make any trip to Aran before 1944. The dominant figure in the foreground, and diagonal brush strokes in the sky area are characteristics of Dillon's style from this period. In the 1940's and 50's another typical feature of Dillon's works depict old style farmhouses, the long low buildings with white walls and roofs of brown or yellow thatch. In 1944 Dillon wrote a long letter to his close friend Madge Connolly in London with illustrations of the Pier and the Village pub, Kilronan, Inishmore, adding, ''I got to Aran Islands...-my god it was the most glorious holiday I've ever had... What a change away from the world completely and absolute peace living a very natural almost primitive life from day to day not knowing what day of the week it is. Hearing no news except a scrap every day the boat arrived from Galway once a week.'' Living with Pat Mullen on Frenchman's Beach, Dillon became a familiar figure in the community. He observed the innocence of the children in works ''Little boy Playing God, ''Playing Games, Inishmore'' and here, a stranger to his subject, a child expresses coyness towards him. Aran Boys and girls wore clothes similar to their Mothers until they were teenagers, which may be related to the folklore superstition that fairies stole young boys thus Mothers dressed their sons as girls. Another explanation may have been a more practical one; a standard size flannel frock fitted every child and Mothers generally made their children's clothes from her cut down cast-offs. With a forlorn expression, a Mother holds her child's hand with sea and cottages in the distance. Wearing a heavy woolen shawl, the Mother's head is covered thus giving the shawl an appearance of a cloak, which acted as protection against prevailing winds and rain showers. The Islanders were hardy, wild and independent folk who had developed a survival system of total self-sufficiency. Dillon has depicted the life of this Aran Mother and child as he expressed in his letter ''in a very natural almost primitive life.'' Although Dillon's style changed in the late 1940's, 50's and 1960's he always retained a keen interest in the narrative in his West of Ireland paintings. With the decline of families speaking the Irish language in the 1960's, Dillon's Aran paintings are a record of another era where Islanders lived without gas heating, modern technology and daily boat visits from tourists.
