WILHELM KUHNERT (German, 1865-1926) Ruhende Löwen (Lion

Lot 77072: WILHELM KUHNERT (German, 1865-1926) Ruhende Löwen (Lion

by Heritage Auctions

May 2, 2015, 11:00 AM CST

Dallas, TX, USA

Estimated Price: $40,000 - $60,000

Description: WILHELM KUHNERT (German, 1865-1926) Ruhende Löwen (Lions at Rest) Oil on canvas 16 x 24-1/2 inches (40.6 x 62.2 cm) Signed lower right: Wilh. Kuhnert Signed and inscribed verso: Wilhelm Kuhnert / Berlin / Ruhende Löwen PROPERTY FROM THE COLLECTION OF JUDSON C. AND NANCY SUE BALL PROVENANCE: Private collection, Switzerland; Sotheby's, London, November 19, 2001, lot 171; Richard Green, London. Lions at Rest proves Friedrich Wilhelm Kuhnert's place among wildlife artists as the finest African game painter, a master of rendering animal physique and behavior. Although Kuhnert was a prolific artist, producing around 5,500 paintings, fewer than 1,000 exist today, making Lions at Rest that much more desirable. He developed his passion for animal painting during the 1880s in the classroom of Paul Meyerheim at the Royal Academy of Arts in Berlin, who taught the importance of sketching from live models at the zoo. On trips to Egypt, East Africa, and India, Kuhnert took Meyerheim's lesson one step further and began to draw animals in the wild - a feat especially challenging, as he was not a professional hunter or tracker. His reputation for rendering animal anatomy with unparalleled accuracy secured him a job illustrating zoologist Johann Wilhelm Haacke's 1901 Animal Life on Earth. Together with the Swede Bruno Liljefors and his fellow Germans Richard Friese and Carl Rungius, Kuhnert was one of "The Big Four," pioneers in early twentieth-century wildlife art who insisted upon observing and drawing animals in their natural habitats. Kuhnert painted elephants, tigers, giraffes, and other giants of the African savannah, but lions were his favorite subjects, gaining him the nickname Wilhelm "Lion" Kuhnert. His lion canvases emphasize the social nature of the species, showing various combinations of males and females stalking prey, watching for danger, eating their kill, or sleeping in dens. Lions at Rest presents two hardy lions and a lioness relaxing after a hunt. Here, Kuhnert effects a mood of contentment, harmony, and bounty through the lions' postures, the lighting, and the surrounding environment: the bright sun shines on the two males, one, with his full belly protruding, blissfully licking his paw, the other, staring into space and about to fall asleep; meanwhile, the more alert lioness nestles in the lush green background brush. Kuhnert's Impressionist brushwork, rich color, and warm lighting further beautify these regal animals. This painting will be included in the Kuhnert catalogue raisonné compiled by Dr. Angelika Grettmann-Werner and the late Dr. Hansjörg K. Werner.

Condition Report: Unlined canvas; no visible condition issues; under UV exam, there appears to be minor inpainting along the lower right extreme edge to address frame wear, and possible minor cosmetic inpainting around the lions' manes. Framed Dimensions 22 X 30.5 Inches

April 28, 2015, 8:00 AM PST

Las Vegas, NV, USA

Estimated Price: $240 - $310

Description: Don Crowley - Wild Bill Hickok: The Premonition - Hand Signed - Limited Edition Canvas - Image Size: 9"w X 11"h. Limited Edition Of: 250 - James Butler "wild Bill" Hickock (1837-1876) Became Famous Throughout The Whole Of 19th Century America For His Skills With Weaponry, Gambling And His Outrageous, Larger-than-life Personality. Like Many Denizens Of The Old West, Wild Bill Traveled From Town To Town Trying His Hand At Different Professions, But It Was His Marksmanship, Or Perhaps His Own Outrageous Accounts Of It, That Earned Him Renown. His Exploits And Wild Tales Had Made Him More Than A Few Enemies And Wild Bill Fell Into The Habit Of Finding A Seat In The Corner Of Saloons To Protect Himself From Surprise Attacks. On The Day Of August 1, 1876, However, Nuttal & Mann's Saloon No. 10 Was Packed And Hickock Could Only Be Seated At The Center Of The Room, With His Back To A Door. Jack Mccall Entered The Room And Shot Wild Bill From Behind As He Played Poker. Hickock's Cards (two Aces, Two Eights And A Jack) Have Since Come To Be Known As The "dead Man's Hand."

ROY LICHTENSTEIN, (AMERICAN, 1923-1997),

Lot 103: ROY LICHTENSTEIN, (AMERICAN, 1923-1997), "THE RIVER" FROM "THE LANDSCAPE SERIES"

by Freeman's

May 3, 2015, 2:00 PM EST

Philadelphia, PA, USA

Estimated Price: $60,000 - $80,000

Description: ROY LICHTENSTEIN (american, 1923-1997)/span "THE RIVER" from "the landscape series"/span 1985, pencil signed and dated, numbered 26/60 (there were also 11 artist's proofs), with full margins, Gemini G.E.L., Los Angeles, publisher and with their blindstamp. Color lithograph, woodblock and screenprint on Arches. image: 37 3/4 x 53 in. (95.8 x 134.5cm) sheet: 40 1/4 x 55 1/2 in. (102.2 x 140.9cm) [Corlett, 214; Gemini G.E.L., 1256] note:/span By the early 1960's, artists like Jackson Pollock and other lions of abstract expressionism were gracing the cover of "LIFE" magazine, having achieved celebrity-level recognition both in the art world and in the average American home. Meanwhile, pop artists like Warhol, Rosenquist and Lichtenstein were pivoting away from the style of New York school and seeking inspiration from ubiquitous public imagery, and finding it in the form of comic strips, advertisements and billboards. Lichtenstein, however, soon began to see the style of Abstract Expressionism as itself a theme worthy of commentary, and he began creating compositions assembled of carefully constructed 'brushstrokes.' By the 1980's, when "The River" was printed, Lichtenstein returned to this subject of the brushstroke, and chooses the historically traditional, perhaps clichéd composition of a landscape as his subject. True to the pop art movement's embrace of mass production, the present work is a complex, multi-process print that renders further irony to the idea of a spontaneous, paint-laden gesture or bucolic subject. There is, however, a certain degree of homage as well, to an all-over, color-filled composition which like its predecessors, conveys and celebrates movement, color and a glorious natural landscape.

Condition Report: The sheet gently rippled throughout. A 2 mm. light brown stain located under the 'n' of the signature with attendant minor rubbing. Similar rubbing evident intermittently in the lower margin for example an approx. 5 in. area directly underneath the signature extending very slightly into the date (which is very faintly smudged). There an attendant small 1/8 in. area of lifted paper fibers located approx. 6 1/4 in. from the right edge. Hinged to the support with strips of what appears to be thin Japanese tape in several places along the reverse of the margin edges (these, and smaller 1 in. remains showing slightly as raised areas in places in the margins). Minor skinning and old tape remains evident along the reverse of the lower-most sheet edges. The print is still hinged to the support (with intermittent 3 in. hinges) from the middle of the left and right edges to the top such that the reverse of the upper 2/3 of the print were not examined (due to weight of print, we have not cut these hinges). Overall, in good condition. Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. Interested bidders are strongly encouraged to request a condition report on any lots upon which they intend to bid, prior to placing a bid. All transactions are governed by Freeman's Conditions of Sale.

by Heritage Auctions

May 2, 2015, 2:00 PM CST

Dallas, TX, USA

Estimated Price: $30,000 - $50,000

Description: ROCKWELL KENT (American, 1882-1971) Untitled ("Asgaard," the farm of Sally and Rockwell Kent), circa 1960-65 Oil on canvasboard 14-7/8 x 18 inches (37.8 x 45.7 cm) Signed and inscribed lower right: To my friends Vera and Yakov Tolchan / Rockwell Kent Inscribed verso: "Asgaard", the farm of Sally and Rockwell Kent / Au Sable Forks, New York, / USA PROVENANCE: The artist; Vera and Yakov Tolchan, Moscow, Russia, gift from the above; By descent; Private collection, Vilnius, Lithuania, gift from the above; By descent to the present owner. EXHIBITED: Pushkin Museum, Moscow, Russia, "Rockwell Kent, 1882-1971," 1983, (exhibited as "The Farm on Which I Live" -- "This Is My Own (Asgaard Farm)") -- direct translation from the Russian. LITERATURE: S. Ferris and E. Pearce, Rockwell Kent's Forgotten Landscapes, Camden, Maine, 1998, pp. 75 and 90; S. Ferris and C. Welsh, The View from Asgaard: Rockwell Kent's Adirondack Legacy, Blue Mountain Lake, New York, 1999, p. 52 (described as "The Farm on Which I Live"). The art historian Richard V. West notes: "Between 1958 and 1967, [Rockwell] Kent made three trips to the Soviet Union. The first trip was at the invitation of the Soviet government to enable the artist to view the major retrospective of his works that had opened at the Pushkin State Museum of the Fine Arts in Moscow in late 1957 to honor Kent's seventy-fifth birthday. Kent had been unable to attend the opening of the exhibition, but it had been captured on film by the admired Soviet cinematographer Yakov Moiseyevich Tolchan (1901-1993). It is highly likely that Kent made the acquaintance of Tolchan and his wife Vera during his visit to Moscow at that time, and subsequently sent this painting around 1960 as a token of his gratitude and friendship. Tolchan and Kent continued a friendly correspondence during the 1960s (Tolchan had excellent command of English) and Kent apparently met with Tolchan during his subsequent trips to the Soviet Union. As Scott Ferris has noted in his study Rockwell Kent's Forgotten Landscapes, this painting was included in a 1983 exhibition at the Pushkin with the provisional title The Farm On Which I Live. "This painting is a view of the dairy barns and complex at Asgaard, Kent's home in the Adirondacks where he operated a dairy farm for a number of years. Kent loved the Adirondack area, and most of the paintings he completed in the last three decades of his career featured the views in and around his farm and surrounding countryside" (R. West in a letter to Mary Adair Dockery, March 5, 2015). In The View from Asgaard: Rockwell Kent's Adirondack Legacy, the art historian Scott R. Ferris describes the thriving environment of Asgaard: "In September 1927, Rockwell and Frances Kent bought an abandoned 257-acre farm near Au Sable Forks in the Adirondacks. . . . Together they built a home and renovated the farm and its buildings which he named 'Asgaard,' Norse for 'farm of the gods.' The house and studio, designed in every detail by Kent, remained his home and base of operations for the rest of his life. Life was busy along the east branch of the Ausable River. Kent orchestrated an elaborate social life with frequent house parties; operated a farm and a dairy business; participated in local and national politics; traveled to wild and lonely places for the adventure and his art; and produced an enormous output of paintings, prints, advertising art, commissions, as well as writing and editorial work" (S. Ferris and C. Welsh, The View from Asgaard: Rockwell Kent's Adirondack Legacy, Blue Mountain Lake, New York, 1999, p. 11). This painting is included in the catalogue of the artist's work being compiled by Scott R. Ferris. It is also included in the catalogue of the artist's work being compiled by Richard V. West.

Condition Report: There appears to be minor frame wear in corners and along lower extreme edge; under UV exam, there appears to be inpainting in the blue pigment in lower left snowbank and reinforcement in the shadows in the pathway; a .5 inch horizontal line of inpainting in the trees at the upper right corner and at center right edge; however, a streaky, discolored varnish layer makes the painting difficult to read. Framed Dimensions 16.25 X 19.5 Inches
