(Wright Bros) - Turnbuckle From Their WRIGHT B Flyer

Lot 417: (Wright Bros) - Turnbuckle From Their WRIGHT B Flyer

by The Written Word Autographs

February 12, 2015, 1:00 PM PST

Tamworth, NH, USA

Estimated Price: $1,200 - $1,800

Description: (Wright Brothers) WRIGHT B Flyer. The Wright Model B was an early pusher biplane designed by the Wright brothers in the United States in 1910. It was the first of their designs to be built in quantity. It featured a true elevator carried at the tail rather than at the front. It was the last Wright model to have an open-frame tail. The Model B was a dedicated two-seater with the pilot and a passenger sitting side-by-side on the leading edge of the lower wing. Louis P. Christman (1893-1972), an engineer at National Cash Register, was employed to restore the 1905 WRIGHT Flyer and provide Orville Wright with a refined set of drawings. The complete restoration took Christman 19 months. The plane is now housed in a museum at Carillon Historical Park and deemed a National Historic Landmark. Christman was given a number of spar fittings and chain drive links which had been part of the 1905 WRIGHT Flyer and the WRIGHT B Flyer and they were consigned to Cowan's by Christman's descendents and sold during a June 21, 2013 auction. 8 ½" turnbuckle from the WRIGHT B Flyer with documentation from Cowan's.

(Wright Bros) - Fitting and Link From Their Plane *RARE*

Lot 416: (Wright Bros) - Fitting and Link From Their Plane *RARE*

by The Written Word Autographs

February 12, 2015, 1:00 PM PST

Tamworth, NH, USA

Estimated Price: $1,000 - $1,500

Description: (Wright Brothers) 1905 WRIGHT Flyer. Over the winter of 1904-1905, the Wright brothers built a new aircraft, the Wright Flyer III. Orville first flew this airplane on June 23, 1905. Flyer III had a new airframe and an upgraded engine with slightly larger cylinders, but it was essentially the same design and had the same marginal performance and instability as Flyers I and II. These shortcomings caused a major crash on July 14, 1904 that all but wrecked the airplane, but from which Orville emerged unscathed. The crash convinced the Wrights to make radical changes to the aircraft design. Two pieces: a 2" x 1 ½" spar fitting 2" x 1 ½" and a 1 ¾" x 1" drive chain link from the 1905 WRIGHT Flyer with documentation from Cowan's.

At Twelve He Would Have Been Considered A Member Of The Community And Expected To Make The Passover Pilgrimage From Nazareth To Jerusalem. Piece of the 1905 Wright Flyer III Plane -- Incredibly Rare With Only a Handful Owned Privately

Lot 634: Piece of the 1905 Wright Flyer III Plane -- Incredibly Rare With Only a Handful Owned Privately

by Nate D Sanders

2015

USA

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Steel piece from the 1905 Wright Flyer III, the first reliably functional airplane. Successful test flights of the 1905 Wright Flyer III even prompted the Wright brothers, after years of trial and error with their first two prototypes, to write Secretary of War William Howard Taft that an aircraft was now available for sale to the U.S. military. After successfully flying this Wright Flyer III in the summer of 1905, including a single flight of 24 minutes long, the Wright brothers disassembled the plane in November 1905, fearing that competitors would steal their design. In 1908, they reassembled it with new controls (and took the first airplane passenger up in it), only to have it crash in a field in a solo test flight by Wilbur Wright. The Wright Flyer III never flew again, but in 1947 was repaired and assembled again by Louis P. Christman, and is now housed in a museum at Carillon Historical Park and deemed a National Historic Landmark (the only airplane named such). Only one known component of the plane is known to exist in private hands aside from the cache from Christman's personal collection of which this piece was a part. Piece measures 2''. With provenance from Cowan's.

Icon Of A Privately Commissioned Context, Russia, 18th Century

Lot 8: Icon Of A Privately Commissioned Context, Russia, 18th Century

by Auctionata AG

February 18, 2015, 6:00 PM CET

Berlin, Germany

Estimated Price: €3,600 - €4,500

Description: Tempera and gold on panel Russia, 18th century Composition organized in three segments Visual representations of St. Nicholas, the Prokrov and the Prophet Elijah With relevant Cyrillic texts Dimensions: 39 x 52 cm Good condition Provenance: private collection Cyprus The present icon dates back to the 18th century and was made in Russia. The composition is organized in six compartments; the three on the top show visual representations, whereas the ones below include relevant Cyrillic texts. The first compartment portrays against a medallion a half figure of St. Nicholas, signing in benediction and holding a Book of Gospels. The saint is flanked by Christ in blessing and the Mother of God, who is presenting to the saint the Episcopal omophorion. The four surrounding spandrels are occupied by events from the life of St. Nicholas, including miracles he performed, as well as his death. The central image shows the Prokrov (Intercession of the Mother of God). Although of small scale, the represented iconography is complete; the lower section includes St. Romanos Melodos flanked by the Constantinopolitan archbishop and St. Andreas the Fool in Christ together with the emperor and empress of Byzantium. The upper part of the composition shows the celestial vision, with the blessing figure of Christ on the upper left corner and the Mother of God holding her veil accompanied by an angel and followed by a crowd of saints. The third scene illustrates events from the life of Prophet Elijah in the desert. The prophet is represented in front of a cave in the middle of the composition. The blue waters allude to the river Jordan, which the prophet crossed, prior to his elevation to heaven via a fiery quadriga. The icon is masterly painted. Its vibrant colors are complemented by gold leaf, applied mainly on the background of the scenes and the dividing margins. The border of the icon was executed in a subtle, green shade. The icon may be regarded as a unique piece, because it represents three subjects, which are not related in any canonical way. The images must have been selected by a private patron, according to his/her own taste and feasts celebrated by his/her family. The icon is in good condition considering the age. Inspection under UV light reveals small areas of retouching and a tiny loss of paint at the lower edge. The panel measures 39 x 52 cm. (cbo) Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
