Andrew Jackson document signed prior to attack on Ft Bowyer, AL

by Lion Heart Autographs

May 15, 2015, 12:00 PM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $950 - $1,250

Description: One Week Prior to Repelling the British Attack on Fort Bowyer, Alabama - JACKSON, ANDREW. (1767-1845). Seventh president of the United States and hero of the War of 1812. Manuscript DS. (“Andrew Jackson / Major Genl Comdg”). 1p. Oblong 12mo. Mobile, September 7, 1814. To Captain John Truirt [?]. ----- “Rec[eive]d of Captain John Truirt AD Q[uarter] M[aster] Gen[era]l this 7th day of Sept[embe]r 1814 at Mobile the sum of Seventy five dollars in full of the above account having signed duplicates hereof witness…” ----- The treaties signed with the Creek Nation in the early part of the 19th century gave the United States territory in Georgia and allowed it to build a road linking Washington and New Orleans, but increasing American encroachment became a divisive issue within the Creek Nation, creating two warring factions. During the War of 1812, the Red Sticks, who opposed assimilation and resented white settlements, allied themselves with Britain and Spain, who supplied them with arms. In July 1813, American troops intercepted Red Stick Creeks after they obtained weapons from the Spanish, which set off the Battle of Burnt Corn, a Creek victory and the first direct conflict between Creeks and Americans. Roughly a month later, the Creeks overran Fort Mims, near Mobile, and massacred nearly 250 of its inhabitants, including soldiers, settlers and mixed-blood Creeks. Thereafter, thousands of settlers fled the wilderness for Mobile, which swelled in size. Federal troops were focused on fighting the British in the Northeast, prompting Georgia, the Mississippi Territory and Tennessee to raise their own militias. Jackson commanded 2,500 volunteers from Tennessee. A turning point in the war against the Creeks came with Jackson’s victory at Alabama’s Battle of Horseshoe Bend in March 1814. In August, Jackson strong-armed the Creek Nation into signing the Treaty of Fort Jackson that forced the Creek Nation to cede to the U.S. 23 million acres of land across central Alabama and Southern Georgia. The Creek defeat earned Jackson the rank of major general and national acclaim upon which he built a political career. After the treaty-signing, Jackson led his troops to Fort Bowyer in Mobile, the former capital of French Louisiana that the Americans claimed under the 1804 Mobile Act. In 1810, American forces began to occupy the then Spanish-held city, which finally surrendered to the Americans in February 1813. Fort Bowyer was quickly constructed to repel British attacks, the first of which came on September 14-16, 1814, just one week after Jackson signed our document. The Royal Navy, underestimating the extent of the fortifications, was soundly defeated, leaving them to turn their attention to New Orleans. On December 23rd, Jackson repulsed the British attack on New Orleans, during which he famously stated, “By the Eternal they shall not sleep on our soil.” Following the first siege of Fort Bowyer, Jackson ordered extended fortification of the garrison to repulse another possible British attack. His foresight proved correct; after the American victory at New Orleans, British forces again laid siege to Fort Bowyer from February 7-12, 1815, in what became the final land engagement of the war. Despite Jackson’s additional fortifications, the British captured the fort and took control of Mobile Bay. However, before there was any additional fighting, word reached Mobile that the Treaty of Ghent, signed on December 24, 1814, had ended the war. Irregular paper loss in both margins just touching the final stroke of the letter “n” of Jackson’s signature. Otherwise in very good condition. Documents signed by Major General Jackson during this period are rare.

Winston Churchill oversize portrait photograph signed during WWII

by Lion Heart Autographs

May 15, 2015, 12:00 PM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $6,000 - $8,000

Description: CHURCHILL, WINSTON. (1874-1965). British statesman and author; Prime Minister from 1940-45, and 1951-55. SP. ("Winston S. Churchill"). 1p. Folio. N.p. 1944. A large (and rare) print of the classic Walter Stoneman (1876-1958) photograph, taken on April 1, 1941, depicting a stern-looking Churchill, seated at his desk in 10 Downing Street's Cabinet Room, and looking directly at the camera. Chief photographer of J. Russell & Sons, photographers to the National Portrait Gallery's National Photographic Record, Stoneman photographed over 7,000 prominent members of British society. In early September 1940, Hitler ordered the bombing of London in a bold attempt to terrorize his enemy. The air campaign, known as the Blitz and lasting until May 1941, wrought terrible death and destruction across England, killing 42,000 inhabitants. Despite the danger, Churchill refused to flee and remained in London, where he would personally survey recently damaged neighborhoods to help boost his country's morale. Though lauded for leading his nation to victory in World War II, Churchill was soundly defeated in the 1945 election. Yet the elder statesman refused to retire and continued to champion the cause of British security and world peace. During this interregnum Churchill began his six-volume history, The Second World War, gave his famous "iron curtain" speech in 1946, and attended the first assembly of the Council of Europe in 1949. Though defeated a second time in 1950, he was victorious in 1951 and once again took the position of Prime Minister until poor health prompted his resignation in 1955. Known to be one of Churchill's favorite portraits, our slightly silvered photograph is elegantly framed and of an unusually large size. The 11½" x 14¼" mounted image has been framed to 19¼" x 23¼." Signed on the photographer's mount. The signature is very slightly damp-stained. The largest signed photograph of Churchill we have ever seen.

Edward Filene autograph MS signed by Boston retailer on peace

by Lion Heart Autographs

May 15, 2015, 12:00 PM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $400 - $600

Description: "Peace is a growth and not a manufacture" - FILENE, EDWARD. (1860-1937). American businessman and humanitarian. AMsS. (“Edward A. Filene”). 1p. Folio. Geneva, September 19, 1927. ----- "Contrary to popular belief Peace is a growth and not a manufacture; which simply means you can not “make” a lasting peace. Such a peace will be brought about only by conditions that are just to all – just to the rich as well as to the poor. Above all conditions that give every man the certainty of getting enough properly paid work to make an adequate living for his wife, his children, and himself; and to keep him and the masses of his fellow-men from supporting war or revolution in the belief that any change is preferable to existing conditions." ----- The son of German immigrants, Filene observed his father’s life in America begin as a peddler and finish as the owner of several successful department stores. With his brother Abraham, Edward built upon his father’s success to create the Boston-based Filene’s, one of the largest such stores in the nation. Its success was due to Filene’s many innovations including a “money back guarantee” and the creation of Filene’s Basement, an annex designed to move excess merchandise at reduced prices. Filene was also an innovator in worker relations implementing such programs as profit sharing, paid vacations, a 40-hour work week, and a credit union for his employees. However, his interest expanded beyond his own staff, and he led an initiative known as the Boston 1915 Movement dedicated to improving working class housing conditions, transportation and access to civic institutions and services such as libraries and parks. Following the devastation of WWI, the World League for Peace was formed taking its name from President Wilson’s 1917 Senate speech that bore the same title. Under the leadership of its president George Dejean, the organization assembled an anthology that included comments written about peace by notable persons from around the world. Between 1925 and 1932, entries were received from royalty, politicians, artists, musicians, and writers including Queen Elizabeth of Belgium, Marie Curie, Marconi, Einstein, Baden-Powell, King Faisal, Maginot, Colette, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Pirandello, Unamuno, Le Corbusier, Foujita, and Paul Signac. The collaboration led to the 1932 publication in Switzerland of a deluxe, limited edition volume entitled Pax Mundi: livre d'or de la paix. Written on a folio sized sheet of vellum, which is slightly yellowed on the left side. Broadly written and signed and uncommon.

1919 Limerick Soviet, Ten Shillings note

by Whyte's

May 9, 2015, 1:00 PM GMT

Dublin, Ireland

Estimated Price: €800 - €1,000

Description: 1919 Limerick Soviet, Ten Shillings note Inscribed "April LIMERICK 1919/GENERAL STRIKE/AGAINST BRITISH MILITARISM/The Workers of Limerick/ Promise to Pay the bearer / 10/- / FIVE SHILLINGS 10/- / The Limerick Trades and Labour Council". Numbered 117 and signed in ink by George Cronin, Chairman, and James Casey, Treasurer, with stamp in violet "MECHANICS INSTITUTE/[shamrock motif]/LIMERICK. Rare. h:3.50  w:5.50 in. Other Notes: A rare forerunner for Irish banknote collectors, this is the first currency used by an independent revolutionary movement in Ireland. The Limerick Soviet was a self-declared administration, named after the committees set up in the Russian Revolution of 1917, that existed from 15 to 27 April 1919. At the beginning of the Irish War of Independence, a general strike was organised by the Limerick Trades and Labour Council, as a protest against the British army's declaration of a "Special Military Area" under the Defence of the Realm Act, which covered Limerick city and parts of Limerick and Clare counties. A special Strike Committee was set up to print money, control food prices and publish newspapers. The businesses of the city accepted the Soviet's currency but outside Limerick and to a lesser degree Dublin, there was little sympathy and some large unions, such as the National Union of Railwaymen, did not give support. After two weeks the Sinn Féin Lord Mayor of Limerick, Alphonsus O'Mara, and the Catholic bishop Denis Hallinan called for the strike to end, and the Strike Committee issued a proclamation on 27 April 1919 stating that the strike was over.

David Ben-Gurion autograph letter signed about the Altalena affair

by Lion Heart Autographs

May 15, 2015, 12:00 PM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $3,000 - $4,000

Description: "The Altalena affair took place during the first truce - and we immediately brought it to an end." - BEN-GURION, DAVID. (1886-1973). Polish-born Israeli statesman who, as his country's first prime minister, proclaimed Israel's independence in 1948. ALS. ("D. Ben-Gurion"). ½p. 8vo. Sdeh Boker, May 7, 1971. To Hungarian born, Canadian artist and poet PAUL Z. HARTAL (born 1936). In Hebrew with translation. ----- "To Zev Hartal, Peace and Greetings, I agree that it is not the quantity which matters but the quality. This we have learnt in everything and in the war that we waged since the establishment of the state. However, the fighters against the Romans and the Babylonians did not surpass in quality their enemies. And you are right - that our civil war in the Roman period was the cause of our defeat. In our war against the Arab armies - there was no civil war. The Altalena affair took place during the first truce - and we immediately brought it to an end. Most respectfully." ----- An early supporter of Zionism, Ben-Gurion moved to Ottoman-controlled Palestine in 1906 and become a farmer. Expelled by the Turkish government at the outbreak of World War I, he rallied British and American support, and called for increased Jewish immigration to Palestine. His decades of promoting Zionism led to the strengthening of Palestine's Jewish community and on May 14, 1948, Ben-Gurion proclaimed the birth of the state of Israel. A provisional government was created along with the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), which was charged with absorbing all other independent military groups. However, several paramilitary groups resisted the reorganization and continued their operations, including the Irgun (headed by future prime minister Menachem Begin) which had chartered the ship Altalena in France to smuggle weapons to its members inside Israel. Although the Irgun had signed an agreement with the IDF to cease operations, the Altalena secretly set sail for Israel at the beginning of June. Aboard were large amounts of arms and ammunition as well as volunteers. When news of the Altalena and Irgun's violation of the prior agreement reached Ben-Gurion, he and Begin began negotiations to distribute the cargo and work out other details. However, before a resolution could be reached, fighting broke out between members of Irgun and the IDF, forcing Ben-Gurion to order the taking of the ship by force. The Irgun surrendered and several hundred members were arrested. The importance of the "Altalena Affair" lies in the establishment of the young state of Israel's authority: the fact that the incident did not devolve into civil war, as Ben-Gurion points out in our letter, was one of the first tests of the fledgling nation. Our letter was a response to a missive Hartal sent to Ben-Gurion commenting on the latter's article published in Tel Aviv's daily newspaper Ma'ariv. A transcription of Hartal's letter accompanies ours, which also mentions the wars of the First and Second Temple periods. With the original envelope and in fine condition.
