Life-Size Bronze 'Lying Chihuahua', France, around 1860

Lot 14: Life-Size Bronze 'Lying Chihuahua', France, around 1860

by Auctionata

January 15, 2015, 6:00 PM CET

Berlin, Germany

Estimated Price: €2,400 - €3,000

Description: Bronze, brown patinatedFrance, c. 1860A life-size pregnant Chihuahua dogThe patina is of special allure in the colorfulnessTotal dimensions: 21 x 31 x 19 cm (height x width x depth)Very good conditionProvenance: Viennese private collectionUntil today, French bronze plastics of this kind enjoy great popularity amongst collectors because of their naturalistic life-size depictionOn an oval, reeded pedestal rests a pregnant Chihuahua dog. She is turning towards her stomach with her apple-shaped head and large distinctive eyes in joyful expectation. The ears are alertly lifted up and the look is calmly prudent. She is wearing a chain dog collar with a big lock. The Chihuahua is one of the most vivid and restless dog breeds, here captured in a quiet moment. In the sculptural work a masterpiece - especially the detailed execution of the fur makes it special. Very cute is the right paw that is hanging over the plinth to hold it. The history of the Chihuahua reaches back to the 8th century to Mexico, where the dog breed was favored by Aztec princesses. The bronze is in very good condition with slight traces of age and wear. The dimensions of the sculpture are 21 x 31 x 19 cm (height x width x depth). Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.

Lot 23: Pavel Svedomsky (1849-1904), Ocean View at Sunset, around 1880

by Auctionata

January 26, 2015, 6:00 PM CET

Berlin, Germany

Estimated Price: €14,400 - €18,000

Description: Oil on canvas Russia, circa 1880 Pavel Alexandrovich Svedomsky (1849-1904) - Russian painter Signed with 'П. (...) Svedomskij' lower rightPartly gilt wooden frame Dimensions: 71 x 100 cm Good condition Provenance: Private collection, Italy Strikingly beautiful seascape in an impressionist manner. The current highest bid for a similar oil painting by Pavel Svedomsky is around €38,000This enchanting seascape by Pavel Svedomsky (1849-1904) depicts a masterly captured ocean view at sunset. The glowing sunset is reflected beautifully on the glistening water surface. Some seagulls and sailboats can be seen in the distance. The wide, almost visionary horizon is rendered with an atmospheric lighting. In the foreground, the foam beats against the brown tinted rocks, which are reflected in the wet sand. This is a nostalgic masterpiece of unsurpassable beauty. The painting is signed with 'П. (...) Svedomskij' lower right. It is in good condition, showing light abrasion and pressure marks from the stretcher. Inspection under UV light reveals some major areas of retouching to the sky. The frame shows small restorations and chips. The image dimensions are 71 x 100 cm, and the overall dimensions, including the frame, are 88 x 117 cm.Pavel Alexandrovich Svedomsky (1849-1904) Born in St. Petersburg, the painter Pavel Alexandrovich Svedomsky was a descendant of a Russian noble family and studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy in Munich with Eduard von Gebhardt and Mihály Munkácsy. In 1875, he settled in Rome. Svedomsky's favorite subjects were history paintings. The famous painting of the 'Medusa' (1882) is today on display at the Moscow Tretyakov Gallery. In Kiev, Svedomsky created paintings for the St. Vladimir Cathedral, depicting scenes from the life of Christ. In his later work, the artist went on to represent Russian themes. Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.

Description: Oil on canvas, relinedNetherlands, 17th century Circle of Frans Francken the Younger (1581-1642) - Flemish Baroque painter and draftsmanDimensions: 107 x 84.5 cm Good conditionProvenance: Private collection, Rome A well-known motif from Christian iconography, here with rich figural scene before a highly detailed backdropThe painting depicts the famous biblical scene of the Adoration of the Magi and was painted by an artist from the circle of Frans Francken the Younger. In the present representation, Mary sits on the left with the divine infant on her lap with the Three Wise Men kneeling or standing before her. More figures populate the background. In the distance one can discern the delicate silhouette of a village through which walks a procession of exotic animals. The artist masterfully managed to render the individual faces - each with a different expression - in the finest manner. The noble materials of the opulent garments shine in bright, harmonious color. The painting is in good condition consistent with age. It shows fine craquelure all over and some restorations backed on the verso. The canvas is relined. There are retouchings to the background and partly to the garments and faces of the figures. The frame shows some wear. The framed work measures 139 x 116 cm, the stretcher frame measures 107 x 84.5 cm.Frans Francken the Younger (1581-1642)Frans Francken was born into a famous Flemish family of painters, active in Antwerp from the 16th to the early 18th century, whereby he is considered the most famous and talented member of the family. He first trained under his father, who was a student of Frans Floris. In 1605 Francken became a master painter. He was a member and later the dean of the Guild of St. Luke. Francken's oeuvre comprises history paintings, genre scenes, still lifes, Kunstkammer paintings and altarpieces. Often he devoted himself to allegorical or biblical themes and executed several variants of one subject matter. Francken is most celebrated for his introduction of new and unusual themes to Flemish painting. Paintings by the artist are found in many prestigious museum collections, e.g. in the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, the Alte Pinakothek in Munich, the Musée du Louvre in Paris as well as the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and the Royal Collection in London.
