Spurs & Belt Buckles

There are perhaps no two objects more closely aligned with the mythologies of the American West than spurs and belt buckles. The spur, a metal tool that affixes to a riding boot, is so synonymous with the Southeastern region of the United States that the city of San Antonio named their basketball team after the device.

The spur, traditionally used by cowboys as a riding aid, is used to discipline or prod horses into traveling at a greater speed. While spurs have been featured in practically every cowboy movie and continue to be employed among working ranchers, they have declined in popularity in recent years amid protests of animal cruelty. Still, they are beautiful objects in their own right that make for charming decorations, especially in ranch homes or cabins.

Belt buckles of the Southwestern United States continue to increase in popularity as people from all backgrounds recognize their beauty and versatility. The buckles of states such as Texas, Wyoming, and New Mexico often feature stunning geometric designs and precious stones including turquoise and coral.
