Charles Marville, Percement avenue de l'Opéra, Paris, Dec. 1876

          Est: €5,000 - €6,000

Laminated on original cardboard, titled in pencil below the image on the mount. Charles Marville, a pioneer of paper photography since 1850, was from 1851 to 1855 the most important supplier of images for the 'Imprimerie Photographique Blanquart-Evrard' in Lille. For their photographic albums, he supplied studies of medieval architecture in France and Germany, impressions of landscape and buildings on the banks of the Rhine, the forest of Fontainebleau and from Algeria. Between 1858 and his death, Marville was commissioned by the city of Paris to photograph the capital, which was undergoing constant urban changes. In 1865, shortly before the extensive modernisation of the city by Baron Haussmann, Marville photographed streets and residential buildings, the last inventory of the "old Paris". In the albumen print offered here, photographed in December 1876, Charles Garnier's new opera house stands in the central background of the composition as a symbol of the magnificent architecture of the Second Empire; the foreground and middle ground, as well as well-set figures, serve as a scenery of transience, illustrating the beginning of a new era.

FONTAINEBLEAU, 1852 salt print from a wax paper negative 19 x 25.5cm framed and mounted Marville was one of the most talented photographers of the nineteenth century, as his position as Official Photographer for the City of Paris reflected. His photographs of Paris are a memorial to the old city, lost to modernity. He produced several photographs of the forests at Fontainebleu, and this depicts the interior of the Chateau de Fontainebleau, specifically the Ballroom completed by King Henry II. The frescoes depicted were designed by Primaticcio, carried out by Nicollo dell'Abbate and date from the 1550's.

Paris Commune: The destruction and reconstruction of the Vendome Column, Paris

          Est: €600 - €900

Photographers: Auguste Colllard (1812 - 1897) and Charles Marville (1816 - 1879). The destruction and reconstruction of the Vendome Column, Paris. 1871, 1873. 2 albumen prints. 22,5 x 32 cm and 34 x 27,5 cm. Each mounted to contemporary board (some foxing), Collard print with photographer's blindstamp below the image on the mount, Marville print with title and photographer's name printed below the image on the mount. By order of the Paris Commune and the initiative of Gustav Courbet, the Vendome Column was torn down on May 16, 1871. After the defeat of the Commune, under the reactionary government of Marshall Mac Mahon Gustave Courbet was sentenced to 6 months in prison and had to pay a fine of 500 Francs for his participation in the Paris Commune. After his release, Courbet fled to Switzerland. When the column was reconstructed in1873 the French government fined Courbet for the cost of circa 335,000 Francs for the column's reconstruction in his absence. – Some light foxing spots, minimal surface scuffing, otherwise in very good condition.
