ADDAMS, Charles (1912 - 1988). Hearse scene New Yorker cartoon, and three letters. 1963-8. Ink and watercolor illustration on paper. Signed to the lower left, inscribed in the lower right margin. Original illustration by the cartoonist and creator of the Addams Family. Depicts a hearse entering a graveyard, with a large white egg chained to the coffin seen inside. Published in the July 27, 1963, issue of The New Yorker in "The Talk of the Town" section without a caption. Along with the original artwork, the lot includes three handwritten letters from Addams to Chester Morris, dated June 1963 through March 1968. Letters chronicle Morris' idea for this illustration, along with a follow-up letter confirming it will appear in print, and a third letter, dated a few years later. It appeared that the two had regular communication and Morris often had ideas for the illustrator. Framed, 22 1/2 x 14 1/2".

Label on frame verso indicates that "This merchandise as contributed to the KQED auction by" with no information filled out. Entire caption is written in pencil below image, "...and then I disconnected the booster from the Electro-Snuggie blanket and put him in the deep-freeze. In the morning, I defrosted him and ran him through the Handi Home slicer and then the Jiffy Burger Grind, and after that I fed him down the Dispose-All. Then I washed my clothes in Bendix, tidied up the kitchen, and went to a movie."

CHARLES ADDAMS (1912-1988) Two-headed baby. Original illustration with inscription to his friend Charlotte Adams on front free endpaper of Addams' book Drawn and Quartered (New York: Random House, 1942), first edition, lacking dust jacket). In addition to their near-identical surnames (his with a double "d"), Charlotte and the cartoonist shared the nickname "Charlie." He humorously inscribed it to her thus, with a drawing of a lightly self-caricatured couple gazing at their hideous offspring, a two-headed baby with grim faces and the caption "He looks a little like both of us, don't you think?" and signed "Chas Addams" below. Adams was a highly esteemed cookbook editor, writer, and critic. She authored the bestselling The Four Seasons Cookbook with James Beard for home cooks and fans of Manhattan's famous "it" restaurant. A bon vivant and gastronome, she befriended Addams among many within the New Yorker and New York Times social circles.

Prince Alexander and the Sicilian princess Maria "Mimi" di Niscemi were wed on February 23, 1971. Son of Prince Nikita Alexandrovich of Russia and a great nephew of Nicholas II of Russia, the last Tsar, Alexander became the first member of the Romanov family to visit Russia after the Revolution. The couple was friendly with Addams, who gifted them this, one of his most iconic cartoons, on the occasion of their wedding.

Signed "Chas Addams" in lower right image; inscribed and signed again on matte at lower right: "For Melisande who casts / the nicest shadows/ Chas Addams." Taped to matte and framed with museum glass. Accompanied by a copy of the 1962 Simon & Schuster edition of the book, where the illustration appears on page 5. Melisande was Addams' love interest when the book was in production and the artist gifted her this original. Assumed to have been lost ever since, it recently appeared as part of her estate. CHARLES ADDAMS (1912-1988) Mounting Preferences. Two unidentified illustrations, most likely for an advertising campaign, circa 1930s or 1940s. Watercolor, ink, and gouache on board. 203x115 mm; 8x4 1/2 inches each. Unsigned. Provenance: Originally sold by the Boston art dealer L.A. Bigelow, which at the time was located at 42 Bromfield Street. This charming pair juxtaposes a woman's unbridled joy at a work of abstract art in the manner of Jean (Hans) Arp with a disinterested man in his smoking gown, standing before his (quintessentially Addams-esque) mounted bear head. These may have been two boards from a larger series of illustrations as evidenced by the lack of Addams' signature, which he reserved for the final image of a series.

Original pen, ink and watercolor sketch of a car crash between two deer hunters, 410 x 105 mm, signed ('Chas Addams') at lower right, tipped at edges to mount and framed to 595 x 300 mm. With facsimile print of another Addams deer-themed drawing. Provenance: from the collection of longtime The New Yorker cartoonist Frank Modell. In this amusing cartoon, Addams illustrates the moment two deer hunters, each with a stag strapped to the hood of his car, realize that their fender-bender has ensnared the antlers of the other's trophy. Addams would revisit the hunter with their trophy theme. Addams and Evil features a cartoon depicting a pair of hunters in a car with a rabbit slung over the fender. Charles Addams (American, 1912-1988), Paper Products for Distinctive Food Service graphite on paper, signed at lower right, inscribed faintly along lower edge of sheet, circa 1962, matted and framed under glass. Sight size 16 x 15 3/4 in.; Frame dimensions 21 1/4 x 21 1/4 in. According to the Tee & Charles Addams Foundation, this was a preliminary study for a KVP Sutherland advertising project. Addams saved all his preliminary work for the basis of possible future alterations. At an unknown date, Addams re-worked this sketch into a pen, ink and wash version featuring Uncle Fester of the Addams Family in order to sell it to The New Yorker or include it in one of his books, likely My Crowd or Favorite Haunts. The final illustration was not published until 2007 when it was used in the Chas Addams Half-Baked Cookbook (Simon & Schuster). It was also included in the foundation's 2010 exhibition at the Museum of the City of New York. The final drawing was published alongside a March 2010 article in The New York Times about the exhibition. This preliminary sketch is included in the artist's catalogue raisonnÃ© project.
