Weiwei Ai Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1957 -

Known for his activism as much as his creative work, artist Ai Weiwei is a sculptor and photographer who promotes free speech and human rights in his homeland of China and worldwide. Born in 1957, Ai is known for his poignant and contemporary art installations, including Ton of Tea and Sunflower Seeds, both commentaries on modern Chinese life. He's an outspoken critic of the Chinese government, and police put him under months-long house arrest in 2011. You can choose from any of Ai Weiwei's art and prints for sale that make thought-provoking statements about life in China and interesting conversation starters.

Buy Ai Weiwei's art and own a piece from the most influential and controversial creative working in China. Provocative works like Dropping a Han Dynasty Urn make bold statements about the nation's relationship with its past and present. In 2007, he flew 1,001 Chinese citizens to Germany's Documenta art show, encouraging them to walk through the city for his Fairytale; he displayed 1,001 chairs to represent them. You can buy Ai Weiwei art and find contemporary sculptures for sale at Invaluable and galleries around the globe, from London to New York.

AI WEIWEI (Beijing, 1957). "Finger" from the series "Ex-votos", 2018. Wood. Handmade in Juazeiro do Norte (Brazil) following the tradition of local artists. Limited edition. Certificate of authenticity attached. Produced for the exhibition Ai Weiwei RAIZ 2018 - held at the OCA, Ibirapuera Park, São Paulo. Measurements: 26 x 11 x 6 cm. For Ai Weiwei raising his middle finger as a protest against established power structures is quite a habit. He demonstrated this with his "Study of Perspective" project, created between 1995 and 2017, which consisted of a series of photographs showing the artist's hand combing monuments or famous places. The Eiffel Tower, the Colosseum, the Berlin Wall, the Sydney Opera House or the Trump Tower were some of the emblematic buildings that posed in the background in such a controversial project. The following year, the conceptual artist even created a series of 100 Murano glass casts of his middle finger, inviting collectors to stage their own critiques in a defiant way. Ai Weiwei is an activist and contemporary artist. Ai collaborated with Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron as an artistic advisor on Beijing's National Stadium for the 2008 Olympics. As an activist, he has consistently criticized the Chinese government for its stance on democracy and human rights. He has also investigated government corruption and cover-ups in China, particularly the case of the collapse of schools in Sichuan after the 2008 earthquake. On April 3, 2011, he was detained at Beijing International Airport, held for 81 days without official charges, and officials alluded all to "economic crimes." In 1978, Ai enrolled at the Beijing Film Academy and studied animation. In 1978, he was one of the founders of the avant-garde group "Stars" with avant garde influences, along with Ma Desheng, Wang Keping, Huang Rui, Li Shuang, Zhong Acheng and Qu Leilei. The group disbanded in 1983, however Ai participated regularly in exhibitions held by the group, such as The Stars: Ten Years in 1989 (Hanart Gallery, Hong Kong and Taipei) and a retrospective exhibition in Beijing in 2007: Origin Point (now Beijing Museum of Art). In 2014, Ai Weiwei made an installation called Illumination located in a former prison hospital, intended to look and feel like a horror movie. For this work, In 1993, Ai returned to China after his father became ill. He helped establish the experimental artists' group "Beijing East Village" and co-published a series of three books on this new generation with Chinese curator Feng Boyi: Black Cover Book (1994), White Cover Book (1995) and Gray Cover Book (1999). In 1999 he moved to Caochangdi, northeast of Beijing, and built a studio house, his first architectural project. Due to his interest in architecture, he founded FALSA Design Studio in 2003. In 2000, he co-curated the art exhibition "Fuck Off" with curator Feng Boyi in Shanghai, China.
