    John Aiken (b.1950) The Journey Through Night (1984) Pencil, conte and varnish, 98 x 73cm Signed verso Provenance: with Oliver Dowling Gallery, label verso Exhibited: Dublin, Oliver Dowling Gallery, One-man exhibition April/May 1984, No. 5 Sculptor, John Aiken, was born in Belfast in 1950 and received his formal training at the Chelsea School of Art and between 1973 - 75 was a Rome Scholar in Sculpture at the British School in Rome. Having taught at the University of Ulster and at the Rome School he joined the staff of the Slade School of Fine Art, culminating with a professorship in 2000. Aiken had a solo show at the Arts Council Gallery in Belfast 1978, and later ones including Oliver Dowling Gallery, Dublin in 1984, the Orpheus Gallery, Belfast, 1991, Centre for Contemporary Art, Gulbenkian Foundation, Lisbon, 1995, and in 2003 at the Stanley Picker Gallery, Kingston University, in association with The Orchard Gallery, Derry. The Arts Council of Ireland, University College Dublin and Trinity College in Dublin, the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Oslo and other public collections hold examples.
