39 x 59,5 cm.
BIBLIOGRAPHIE : Shahen Khachatourian, Hovhannes /Ivan/ Aïvazovsky, p. 275 ill.
Shahen Khachatourian, Ivan (Ovannes) Aïvazovsky 1817-1900, Erevan, 2013, p. 134 ill. Massacre of the Armenians in the Sea of Marmara in 1886 oil on canvas , signed and dated : « Aïvazovsky 1897 » Certi cate of Ivan Samarine

IVAN KONSTANTINOVICH AIVAZOVSKY | An Ox-Drawn Cart on the Shore and a Swimmer in the Shallows

Estimate: £120,000 - £180,000

Description: oil on canvas

Condition Report: Structural Condition The canvas is unlined and is securely attached to what appears to be the artist's original keyed wooden stretcher. This is ensuring a stable structural support. There is a canvas patch repair to the right of the centre of the left vertical stretcher member as viewed from the reverse. This is entirely stable. The canvas is inscribed on the reverse. Paint Surface The paint surface has an even varnish layer. The paint surface has an overall pattern of slightly raised lines of craquelure including corresponding to the central vertical stretcher member. These are stable. There is also a diagonal line of raised craquelure running through the pink clouds in the lower left quadrant and a further raised line towards the lower part of the right edge. These are also stable. Inspection under ultra-violet light shows an area of retouching within the sky to the right of the ship's sails which corresponds to the patch visible on the reverse, a line of retouching corresponding to the raised line of craquelure within the clouds in the lower left quadrant, and small spots and lines of retouching on and close to the extreme edges of the composition, including in the upper right corner. Summary The painting would therefore appear to be in good and stable condition. IVAN KONSTANTINOVICH AIVAZOVSKY | Greeting an American Ship

Estimate: £40,000 - £60,000

Description: oil on canvas

Condition Report: The canvas has been laid down on hardboard, which is attached to what appears to be the original stretcher. The tacking edges have been cut. There are abrasions with associated paint loss along all edges. The work is covered in a layer of heavily discoloured varnish as well as surface dirt. There is craquelure throughout, most noticeably at the centre where it has caused the varnish layer to lift slightly. There is a scratch in the upper right corner and a few flecks of gold paint on the sand in the lower left. Inspection under UV-light reveals a small area of possible old retouching in the sky, but the aforementioned varnish layer hinders a more conclusive analysis. Held in a gilt wooden frame with plaster mouldings. Unexamined out of frame."In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Estimate: £50,000 - £70,000

Description: oil on canvas

Condition Report: Structural Condition The artist's canvas has been lined onto a piece of hardboard. The hardboard support is securely attached to what appears to be the artist's original, keyed wooden stretcher. The canvas tacking edges remain pinned to the edges of the stretcher. Paint Surface The paint surface has an even varnish layer. There is a pattern of very fine lines of drying craquelure within the shore line in the lower left quadrant of the composition. These are entirely stable and are not visually distracting. Inspection under ultra-violet light shows just a few tiny scattered spots of retouching. Ivan K. Aivazovsky (1817-1900), after, Ship in Storm, 19th C

Estimate: €16,000 - €20,000

Description: Oil on canvas Russia, late 19th century After Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky (1817-1900) - Russian marine painter Inscribed in Cyrillic lower right 'Aivazovsky'Elaborate museum level framing Overall dimensions, framed: 136 x 173.5 cmProvenance: Private collection, GermanyThe present depiction of a dramatic shipwreck before a rocky coast of the Crimea was already painted in the late 19th century. It is closely related to Marine depictions by Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky and is presumably the work of an artist active in Aivazovsky's circle. The artist most likely had a number of students and contemporary copyists; works similar to the present painting often fetch up to 50,000 Euros at international auctionsThe present work was painted by a Russian artist active in the late 19th century. The composition is deeply influenced by the motifs of the Russian marine painter Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky, who was a famous and very sought after painter already in his lifetime. His preserved oeuvre is above-average in size, leading to the assumption that the artist had a number of students and followers or even maintained a workshop producing paintings similar in size, look and quality. Accordingly, it was a common practice to render these works with the artist's 'signature' or to inscribe them with 'Aivazovsky' later. Today, these paintings are also very sought after collectable items on the international art market and often fetch up considerable bidding prices, as long as they are in top quality and date to the life time of the artist. The elaborate museum level framing delicately contributes to the beauty of the painting offered here. The painting is inscribed in Cyrillic lower right 'Aivazovsky'. There are light damages to the upper edge due to the pressure of a former stretcher from the reverse. Inspection under UV light therefore reveals a number of wider areas of retouching at the upper end as well as in the right parts of the sky. There are further tiny traces of retouching. The canvas is unlined and supported by two small pieces of linen on the reverse. The impressive gilded frame only shows small traces of age and use. The framed work measures 136 x 173.5 cm and the size of the stretcher is 86 x 131 cm.Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky (1817-1900)The marine painter Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky was of Armenian descent and was born in Feodosija in the Crimea. Thanks to the permission of Tsar Nicholas I., he received his first artistic training at the Russian Academy of Arts, which was followed by further classes under the landscape painter Maxim Worobjow (1787-1855) at the Arts Academy in St. Petersburg. From 1839 to 1844, Aivazovsky traveled with further support by the Tsar to Europe and studied intensively the masterpieces in Venice, Florence and Rome. Aivazovsky finally became a full member of the Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg and was appointed Professor at the age of thirty. He frequently traveled to art centers such as Paris and Constantinople. Works by Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky can be found in the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg and in the Aivazovsky Museum in Feodosia in the Crimea. Inspection under ultra-violet light shows small scattered retouchings, including: 1) a few small areas of tiny carefully applied spots of retouching within the sea in the lower left quadrant, 2) a small area of retouching within the sea below and to the right of the ship, 3) a small spot of retouching within the buildings on shoreline in the lower right quadrant, 4) a horizontal retouching with associated small spots within the sky towards the centre of the left edge, and some further tiny spots and lines within the sky. Summary The painting would therefore appear to be in very good and stable condition."This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues. Condition Report: The canvas has been laid on plywood. There is a light layer of surface dirt and the varnish layer has discoloured. There is fine, stable craquelure throughout. There are frame abrasions at the edges. Inspection under UV light reveals retouching in the lower part of the composition, to the hut, the ground and to the right of the figures. IVAN KONSTANTINOVICH AIVAZOVSKY | Seascape with Boat

Estimate: £20,000 - £30,000

Description: oil on canvas

Condition Report: Structural Condition The canvas is unlined and is securely attached to what appears to be the artist's original, keyed wooden stretcher. This is ensuring a stable structural support. The canvas is inscribed on the reverse. Paint surface The paint surface has a relatively even and discoloured varnish layer. The painting should respond well to cleaning. There is a very small flake of fragile and lifting paint close to the lower part of the left edge. There are two very small paint losses below the signature in the lower left corner, two very small paint losses above the centre of the lower edge, and a very small paint loss in the upper right corner of the sky. There is also evidence of frame abrasion on the extreme edges of the composition, most notably on the right edge. Inspection under ultra-violet light confirms the discoloured and degraded varnish layer which prevents the ultra-violet light from fully penetrating. Inspection under ultra-violet light also shows very small horizontal lines of retouching towards the lower left corner including two intermittent fine lines running through the signature. These appear to have been applied on top of the discoloured varnish layers. No other retouchings are visible under ultra-violet light. Summary The painting would therefore appear to be in good condition and would benefit from cleaning, restoration and revarnishing including the localised consolidation of the small flake of fragile and lifting paint mentioned above and from filling and retouching any paint losses. Estimate: £20,000 - £30,000

Description: oil on canvas

Condition Report: The canvas had been re-lined. There are frame abrasions with associated paint loss along all four edges. There is craquelure throughout the composition, which appears stable at present. There is a layer of surface dirt with spots in places. Inspection under UV light reveals retouching to the deep cracks throughout the composition. Held in a gilt wooden frame. Unexamined out of frame."In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. IVAN KONSTANTINOVICH AIVAZOVSKY | Jesus Walks on Water

Estimate: £30,000 - £50,000

Description: oil on canvas

Condition Report: Structural Condition The canvas is unlined and is securely attached to what appears to be the artist's original, keyed wooden stretcher. This is providing a stable structural support. There is a small repair in the upper left corner as viewed from the reverse. This appears stable but has distorted the canvas and is clearly visible on the recto. Paint Surface The paint surface has an uneven and heavily discoloured and degraded varnish layer. There are scattered drip marks and accretions throughout the composition. There are small pin holes running intermittently along the upper horizontal framing edge which possibly relate to a previous tacking edge. The paint surface has an overall pattern of raised craquelure. This appears stable. There is a raised stretcher-bar line corresponding to the central horizontal stretcher member. This also appears stable. There is an area of minor paint losses towards the lower left corner of the composition, a minor paint loss within the sky in the upper right quadrant, and a further small line of paint loss within the sea in the lower left quadrant of the composition. Inspection under ultra-violet light confirms the heavily discoloured and degraded varnish layer which prevents the ultra-violet light from fully penetrating. Inspection under ultra-violet light also shows an area of retouching in the upper right corner of the composition which corresponds to the repair mention above. There are also small spots of retouching corresponding to the pin holes mentioned above, and a few small spots and lines of retouching above the area of paint loss towards the lower left corner of the composition. Due to the heavily discoloured and uneven varnish layers it is not possible to ascertain the extent of any previous restoration work. Summary The painting would therefore appear to be in relatively good and stable condition and would benefit from cleaning, restoration and revarnishing, including the treatment of the raised craquelure pattern, and from the removal and careful replacement of any previous restoration work."This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues.
