A Critical Catalogue, London 1966, p. 15 , No.16, POUSSIN, NICOLAS (KOPIE NACH, WOHL DES 18. JAHRHUNDERTS) (Les Andelys 1594 - 1665 Rom) Moses zertritt Pharaos Krone. Öl auf Leinwand. 100,5 x 141,5 cm. Provenienz: - Sammlung Ritter, Basel. - Schweizer Privatbesitz. Literatur: - Blunt, Anthony: The Paintings of Nicolas Poussin. A Critical Catalogue, London 1966, S. 15 , Nr. 16, aufgeführt unter Kopie Nr. 2. Diese Darstellung des Mosesknaben, der auf die Krone des Pharaos tritt, geht auf das Gemälde von Poussin zurück, das zwischen 1642 und 1647 im Auftrag vom Mäzen und Bankier Jean Pointel entstand und sich in der Abtei von Woburn im Besitz des Duke of Bedford befindet (siehe Blunt, Anthony: The Paintings of Nicolas Poussin, A Critical Catalogue, 1975, Nr. 16, S. 15). Eine weitere eigenhändige Version von Poussin befindet sich im Louvre, Paris (92 x 128 cm, datiert 1643; siehe ebd. Nr. 15). Die den Antiquitates Judaicae (II, 9, 7) entnommene Geschichte zur Moseslegende erzählt, wie der Knaben nach dem er von der Prinzessin Thermutis aufgefunden, dem Pharao zur Adoption vorgestellt wurde. Dieser schliesst den Knaben in die Arme und setzt ihm scherzend die Krone, die ein Bildnis des ägyptischen Gottes Ammon zeigt, auf. Der Kleine lässt die Krone zu Boden fallen und tritt versehentlich mit dem Fuss darauf. Ein anwesender Schriftgelehrter erkennt darin die Erfüllung des Orakels, das den Untergang des ägyptischen Reiches prophezeit hat. Er verlangt die sofortige Tötung des Knaben, woran ihn die Prinzessin und der Pharao hindern. Die Thematik taucht in der abendländischen Malerei seit dem späten Mittelalter vereinzelt auf, so beispielsweise bei Benozzo Gozzoli (1420-1497) im Camposanto in Pisa.
