L'opera di squisita qualità, potrebbe essere stata realizzata da un allievo del maestro bolognese, una personalità artistica di rilievo cresciuto all'interno della sua bottega e in grado di interpretare con i tutti i crismi estetici e artistici l'opera originale. In via cautelativa, essa viene datata a cavallo tra il Seicento e il Settecento. Francesco Albani (Bologna 1578 - 1660) bottega/cerchia di Battesimo di Gesù Olio su tela 63 x 50,5 cm L’opera per ragioni di stretta affinità stilistica con Albani va ascritta come replica di bottega destinata al culto privato. Essa riprende il registro inferiore della pala eseguita per la chiesa di San Giorgio, e oggi conservata presso la Pinacoteca Nazionale di Bologna. Dopo i primi studi, condivisi con Domenichino e Guido Reni, nella bottega di Denys Calvaert, Francesco Albani fu ammesso all'Accademia dei Carracci. Nel 1600 si trasferì a Roma, ove il suo stile spiccatamente classicista trovò affinità con quello del suo maestro Annibale Carracci, con il quale collaborò per la realizzazione degli affreschi della chiesa di San Giacomo degli Spagnoli. Dal 1609 Albani divise la sua vita principalmente fra Roma e Bologna, con parentesi a Firenze e Mantova, divenendo uno dei massimi pittori del suo tempo. Tra i suoi allievi, meritano di essere menzionati Giovanni Maria Galli da Bibiena e Girolamo Bonini. Francesco Albani (Bologna 1578 - 1660) workshop/circle of The Baptism of Jesus Oil on canvas 63 x 50,5 cm For reasons of close stylistic affinity with Albani, this artwork should be ascribed as a workshop replica intended for private worship. It takes up the lower register of the altarpiece painted for the church of San Giorgio, and today it is kept in the Pinacoteca Nazionale in Bologna.

Sie wird von Nymphen begleitet, die ihr helfen, den vor ihnen liegenden, auf Tuch und roten Kissen schlafenden Putti, heimlich deren Bögen und Köcher zu entwenden. Das andere Gemälde stellt die in abendlicher Landschaft auf einem Bett liegende Venus dar und den neben ihr am Boden liegenden Mars. DER RAUB DER EUROPA Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 145 x 197 cm. In teilvergoldetem Rahmen. Darstellung einer bekannten mythologischen Szenerie: In Landschaft die auf einem hellbraunen Stier sitzende Europa, die Tochter des phönizischen Königs Agenor und der Telephassa. Sie trägt ein hellblaues Gewand, das teils mit Goldbordüre verziert ist und hält sich am Kopf des Stiers fest, der dort und um seinen Halsbereich einen Blumenkranz trägt. Zudem über ihr im Himmelsbereich ein großer roter Umhang, gehalten von einem geflügelten Putto, weitere Putti begleiten sie, von denen zwei auf der rechten Seite zu erkennen sind. Zeus, der oberste olympische Gott, hatte sich in die Königstochter verliebt und verwandelte sich wegen seiner argwöhnischen Gattin Hera in einen Stier, um Europa zu entführen. Als Stier gewann er ihr Zutrauen und so setzte sie sich auf seinen Rücken. Links von ihr, ihre Füße mit seinem rechten Arm umklammernd, ein geflügelter Amor, einen Pfeil in seiner linken Hand haltend, mit welchem er die Liebe zwischen den beiden evoziert hatte. Am Ufer des linken Bildrands eine Dreiergruppe von Figuren in edlen Gewändern, die den Verlust und die anstehende Entführung der Königstochter Europa betrauern, die sich ihnen mit ihrer ausgestreckten Hand bei geöffnetem Mund zuwendet. Darstellung in zurückhaltender Farbgebung bei starker Hell-Dunkel-Akzentuierung. Albani war Schüler von Denys Fiammingo Calvaert (1540-1619) sowie von Ludovico Carracci (1555-1619) und stand in Verbindung mit Guido Reni (1575-1642), der mit ihm rivalisierte. Bekannt für seine anmutigen Frauengesichter, für die seine überaus schönen Kinder Modell gesessen haben sollen. Er unterrichtete später angeblich in der Accademia degli Incamminati. Die Werke seiner Hand, u. a. in zahlreichen öffentlichen Sammlungen und Museen, beziehen sich zumeist auf mythologische Darstellungen. Anmerkung: Das Thema mit der Entführung der Europa durch Zeus als meist weißen Stier wurde häufig in der Malerei der Kunstgeschichte aufgegriffen, u. a. von so bekannten Malern wie Jacob Jordaens (1593-1678) und Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669).
