              ANNI ALBERS GR 1.

              Est: $6,000 - $9,000

ANNI ALBERS GR 1. Color screenprint on Arches, 1970. 510x409 mm; 20¼x16¼ inches, full margins. Signed, titled, dated and numbered 56/100 in pencil, lower margin. Published by Grippi Gallery, New York. A very good impression with strong colors. According to Nicholas Fox Weber, in his introduction to the Guggenheim Museum's 1999 retrospective on the artist, Albers (1899-1994) became a printmaker late in her career and collaborated with leading printers to combine screenprinting with photo-offset lithography, as well as with other print media to create unprecedented, experimental works. Fox Weber wrote, "No wonder she so often quoted Kandinsky's, 'There is always an 'and'.' That verity certainly applied to her . . . Her faith in art, and the encapsulation of its possibilities was nothing short of marvelous." Weber/Danilowitz 71.

(Connecticut, North Carolina/Germany, 1899-1994) (Weber & Danilowitz 29),1972, edition 132/150, signed lower right 'Anni Albers 1972', titled lower left, stamped verso, Fox Press, West Hartford, printer, the artist and Fox Press, West Hartford, publisher, photo offset print on paper, sheet 24 x 20 in. (61 x 50 cm.); metal frame, 24-3/8 x 20-1/4 x 1 in. Provenance: The Collection of Clare and Jared Edwards, West Hartford, Connecticut Note: In the 1999 Anni Albers retrospective exhibition catalog, Nicholas Weber comments on Anni Albers' beginnings with photo offset prints and this series specifically, 'When we began to discuss the possibility of her working with photo-offset, Anni proved to be a quick study. She decided that she would utilize the medium to make a print of two horizontal rectangular forms stacked one on top of the other. Each of the rectangles would contain a triangulated pattern, in keeping with the artist's recent geometric experimentations, a design full of diversion and ins and outs, but deliberately lacking in internal symmetry or repetition. At the Bauhaus, Anni had been deeply moved by Wilhelm Worringer's pivotal book Abstraction and Empathy; she embraced Worringer's idea of abstraction providing the opportunity to create 'visual resting places' removed from the often painful realities of the natural world. She was interested in art that was timeless and universal rather than art with specific links to a known locale or moment in history, or to the maker's personal experience. This pure realm of art could provide some of the harmony that life itself sometimes lacked. To keep the viewer engaged, the new creation, like all of Anni's compositions, had to eschew easy resolution; like Josef, Anni imbued abstraction with a certain tension, a perpetual in/out motion, an ongoing play between image and ground. The artist's own persona was to fade in deference to the sacred realm of art and the comforts as well as the realities of the technical. Anni had no wish to reveal private emotions or the sometimes troubling fluctuations of her own mind and heart; she preferred, instead, to focus on the purely aesthetic and practical issues of printmaking, just as she had for many years reveled in the construction of textiles.'

              Est: $12,000 - $18,000

ANNI ALBERS Connections 1925/1983. Portfolio with complete text and 9 color screenprints on 150-gram Umbria paper, 1984. 700x497 mm; 27 5/8x19 1/2 inches (sheets), full margins, loose as issued. One of 125 numbered copies. Numbered "61" in pencil, on the justification page. Each color screenprint signed, dated and numbered 61/125 in pencil, lower margin. Printed by Samuele Villa, Muggiò. Published by Fausta Squatriti, Milan. With the original printed cardboard portfolio folder. Superb, richly-inked impressions of these scarce screenprints. The portfolio is a survey of Albers' (1899-1994) graphic work from 1925 to 1983. According to the introduction by Squatriti, "Anni Albers has always thought that art is the continuation and the development of the ancient craftmanship on a plane no longer practical but purely intellectual. Her graphic work, therefore, has the value of a profound analysis of the logical structure of perception or, more precisely, of the substantial unity of the sensorial and the psychological moments of vision: in other words, of the active, and not merely receptive, character of vision. This publication of very limited selection of her graphic work is an homage to an authentic artist, who in fifty years of dedicated work has chosen above all to remain faithful to the glorious school in which she was trained and to the aesthetics and ethics of art which she learned. Always modern, she has never sought the new for its own sake. Serenely she has followed the thread of her first research, working with it, making it into context, without ever repeating or boring herself."

              Anni Albers Do-C. 1973. Farbserigraphie auf leicht…

              Est: €3,200 -

Concrete Art Anni Albers Do-C. 1973. Farbserigraphie auf leicht strukturiertem Velin. 39 x 39 cm (47,2 x 42 cm). New Yorker Museum of Modern Art. Colour silk-screen on light structured wove paper. Signed, dated, titled and numbered. - Isolated faint, hardly noticeable stain, tiny surface abrasion on lower right depiction area, isolated very light handling traces in margins, hardly notcieable surface abrasion on the verso, all in all very good. Splendid, colour-intense and clear impression with narrow margin, at the bottom with wide margin. - One of 20 copies. - In her work, Anni Albers masterfully intertwines art with weaving, revolutionising the craft with modernist ideas. Celebrated as one of the most innovative and influential textile artists of our time, she is in no way inferior to her husband Josef Albers and his work. Rather, both are to be understood as an artistic power duo who devoted themselves to art in an exploratory manner. Both studied and taught at the Bauhaus, the institution that regarded art as a complete work. Based on this, Anni Albers became a pioneer of her own unique weaving style and became the first textile artist to receive a solo exhibition at the New York Museum of Modern Art in 1949. In the last years of her life, she turned increasingly to graphic art, processing the colour fields of her geometric-concrete compositions into web-like patterns of playful sensitivity. In the initially sharp-edged abstract representations an infinite flow and movement unfolds. * Dieses Werk ist regelbesteuert. Printed and published by Tamarind Lithography Workshop, Inc., Los Angeles. From the same-titled series. A very good impression. According to Nicholas Fox Weber, in his introduction to the Guggenheim Museum's 1999 retrospective on the artist, Albers became a printmaker late in her career and collaborated with leading printers to blend screenprinting with photo-offset lithography, as well as with other print media to create unprecedented, experimental works. Fox Weber wrote, "No wonder she so often quoted Kandinsky's, 'There is always an 'and'.' That verity certainly applied to her . . . Her faith in art, and the encapsulation of its possibilities was nothing short of marvelous." Weber/Danilowitz 10.
