                    Josef Albers (1888-1976) was a German-born artist and educator who is best known for his work in color theory and geometric abstraction. He was a pioneer of the Bauha movement, which was a revolutionary design school that operated in Germany from 1919 to 1933, and he later taught at Black Mountain College in North Carolina and at Yale University.Albers is best known for his "Homage to the Square" series, which he began in the 1950s and continued to work on until his death. These paintings consist of squares of vario colors, arranged in overlapping or concentric patterns. The series explores the way that colors interact with each other and with the viewer's perception, and it has had a significant influence on subsequent generations of artists.In addition to his work as a painter, Albers was also a prolific writer and educator. He published several books on color theory, including "Interaction of Color," which is still widely ed as a textbook in art schools today. This lot contains a small printer's proof screenprint (from the collection of the publisher, Norman Ives) and an anniversary screenprint poster from The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The latter is an Homage to MMA-1. The poster is housed in an acrylic case, and the smaller work is housed in a simple black frame. The poster is mounted loosely, and there are minor scuffs to the plexiglass of the smaller work. The pieces measure 11 3/4" x 11 1/2" and 26 1/4" x 26 1/4". In-house shipping is available. It bears the Publisher's blind stamp of Ives Sillman Inc., New Haven, lower right. It was Printed by Sirocco Screenprints, New Haven. The work is housed in an acrylic case. There is very minimal toning / discoloration to the lower margin of the sheet. The image size measures 13 3/4" x 13 3/4", and the case measures 22" x 22". In-house shipping is available. A 69, lo. le. num. 68/100 as well as titled, lo. ri. blind stamp, framed under glass. - German-American painter, graphic artist, designer and teacher. A. was teacher before studying at the Königliche Kunstschule in Berlin 1913-15. 1919-23 he studied in Munich and at the Bauhaus in Weimar. After graduating there he became head of the glass painting department; in 1928 he also took over the furniture class from Marcel Breuer. After the Bauhaus was closed down by the Nazis he emigrated to the USA where he became one of the most important teachers of European art. Among his pupils were R. Rauschenberg, W. de Kooning and R.
