Brown and muted tones predominate in his palette, a legacy of the more sober Goya, the Black Paintings, which he also approaches in the theme chosen in many of his works: the marginalized, the condemned... Not in vain Aureliano de Beruete considered him the most important of the painters influenced by Goya. Examples of this are El viatico and El gallego de los curritos (Prado). In the first he makes an interesting study of light, which is concentrated in the figure of the priest who carries the viaticum and contrasts with the figure in the foreground that appears from behind against the light, while around it there are several others that kneel as the Blessed Sacrament passes. Scene of costumbrista character that reflects with great sensitivity the rural life, habitual thematic in the production of Leonardo Alenza, one of the most singular painters of the Spanish romanticism. The composition presents a group of peasant figures in a landscape environment treated with an enveloping atmosphere, where light and earthy tones contribute to a sense of everyday life and seclusion. Alenza also introduces a subtle contrast between the serenity of the landscape and the expressiveness of the characters, achieving a lively and humanized scene. The loose brushstrokes and the light treatment show his closeness to the Goyaesque tradition, especially in the attention to the popular types and in a certain underlying melancholy. This work is thus part of the artist's more intimate and observational line, highly valued for his ability to capture everyday reality with a personal and modern approach for his time. Leonardo Alenza was trained at the Royal Academy of San Fernando under the influence of José de Madrazo, an institution where he became an academician of merit in 1842. He was considered by Aureliano de Beruete as the most outstanding continuator of the Goyaesque tradition in the 19th century. His work is widely represented in the Museo del Prado, as well as in institutions such as the Museo del Romanticismo, the Museo de Historia de Madrid, the Biblioteca Nacional, the Museo Lázaro Galdiano and the Museo Cerralbo.

Ink and wash ink drawing on paper. Numbered 38. 17x13.5 cm. Leonardo Alenza, active during the first half of the 19th century, was one of the leading figures of Spanish Romanticism. His work, of a costumbrista, satirical nature and marked by acute social observation, focuses on the depiction of the society of his time, populated by figures of great expressive power that at times verge on the grotesque. His production has been linked to the “Caprichos” of Francisco de Goya, with whom he shares a spirit of satire and critical reflection, as well as a constant tension between the real and the symbolic. Several autograph works by the artist, with themes similar to the present example, are held in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

Measurements: 14,5 x 21,5 x 1,5 cm (Album). Drawing album that contains sixteen drawings that bring together some landscapes, a study of a baby's head and mostly folk and popular scenes. These themes, together with the artist's technique, the composition and the presence of everyday archetypes, invite us to think of Leonardo Alenza's work. Leonardo Alenza captured in his drawings and watercolors with acute sensitivity the Madrid that was contemporary to him. His works reveal urban landscapes and scenes that he probably observed on his walks, which he himself described as "hunts", through the popular neighborhoods or along the riverbanks. Nor are his compositions lacking in the typical characters of Madrid's costumbrismo: popular figures, workers, delinquents and common people that he surely saw every day around his home, in the Plaza de San Ildefonso, the Corredera and other central areas. Alenza thus captured a living gallery of social types, modest trades and everyday scenes that portray both the customs and the risks of life in the capital of the nineteenth century. Leonardo Alenza began his training learning drawing with Juan Antonio Ribera, and attending the coloring and composition classes taught by José de Madrazo at the Royal Academy of San Fernando. In 1842 he was named academician of merit of San Fernando. He specialized in small format costumbrist works, as well as in portraits full of life in which he knew how to endow his models with expressiveness and psychological depth. His oil paintings are characterized by their loose, stain-based execution, as well as by his masterful handling of light and his mastery of color. His palette is dominated, as we can see here, by brown and muted tones, an inheritance of the more sober Goya, that of the "Black Paintings", which he also approaches in the subject matter chosen in many of his works, of which the oil painting we are commenting on here is an eloquent example. In fact, Aureliano de Beruete considered him the most important painter influenced by Goya. Leonardo Alenza is widely represented in the Prado Museum, and also has works in the Romantic and Municipal Museums of Madrid, the National Library, the Lázaro Galdiano and the Marquis of Cerralbo.

In the skillful caricatured characterization of the characters the influence of Teniers and other Dutch painters that Alenza admired can be appreciated. Popular taste and political criticism are united in the tender canvas. Leonardo Alenza began his training learning drawing with Juan Antonio Ribera, and attending the coloring and composition classes taught by José de Madrazo at the Royal Academy of San Fernando. In 1842 he was named academician of merit of San Fernando. He specialized in small-format costumbrist works, as well as in portraits full of life in which he knew how to endow his models with expressiveness and psychological depth. An outstanding renovator of the Madrid costumbrista school, his vision is critical of society, taking pleasure in reflecting conflictive aspects of life, as opposed to the kindly vision of his Andalusian contemporaries. A great draftsman, gifted with an astonishing ease of execution, he was capable of sketching with great economy of means any scene that passed before his eyes, which allowed him to collaborate as a draftsman in important publications of the time. His oil paintings are characterized by their loose, stain-based execution, as well as by his masterful handling of light and his mastery of color. Measurements: 35 x 27,5 cm; 53 x 45,5 cm (frame). Costumbrista themes were Leonardo Alenza's favourite genre. On occasions he adopted a satirical tone, but in his depiction of the most disadvantaged sectors of society he showed delicacy and respect. This is the case in the present scene, in which three beggars shelter from the inclemency of the weather, sheltered in front of an old wall of a dilapidated house. Each character withdraws into his or her own interior. Silent, they withdraw into their thoughts: a boy with his clothes in tatters, a woman emptying her basket and a crestfallen man holding his dog on a leash. Another version of this painting was auctioned at Alcalá Subastas (15-06-2023). Leonardo Alenza began his training by learning drawing with Juan Antonio Ribera, and attending the colouring and composition classes given by José de Madrazo at the San Fernando Royal Academy. His mother María Nieto died when the child was still small and in 1817 Father Valentín remarried the young Micaela Bertrandi. Both of them, from a modest situation, facilitated his studies, and in return, he always lived with them and helped them. A municipal plaque in Plaza de San Ildefonso No. 4 indicates that he had his studio there. It was his home where he died of tuberculosis on June 30, 1845, at only 37 years old. Measurements: 35 x 27,5 cm; 53 x 45,5 cm (frame). Costumbrista themes were Leonardo Alenza's favourite genre. On occasions he adopted a satirical tone, but in his depiction of the most disadvantaged sectors of society he showed delicacy and respect. This is the case in the present scene, in which three beggars shelter from the inclemency of the weather, sheltered in front of an old wall of a dilapidated house. Each character withdraws into his or her own interior. Silent, they withdraw into their thoughts: a boy with his clothes in tatters, a woman emptying her basket and a crestfallen man holding his dog on a leash. Another version of this painting was auctioned at Alcalá Subastas (15-06-2023). Leonardo Alenza began his training by learning drawing with Juan Antonio Ribera, and attending the colouring and composition classes given by José de Madrazo at the San Fernando Royal Academy. In 1842 he was appointed academician of merit of San Fernando. He specialised in small-format genre paintings, as well as portraits full of life in which he knew how to endow his models with expressiveness and psychological depth. Aureliano de Beruete considered him the most important of the painters influenced by Goya. Leonardo Alenza is widely represented in the Museo del Prado, and also has works in the Romantic and Municipal Museums of Madrid, the Biblioteca Nacional, the Lázaro Galdiano and the Marqués de Cerralbo.

Attributed to LEONARDO ALENZA Y NIETO (Madrid, 1807 - 1845). "Dwarfs". Oil on canvas. Re-drawn. It has a 20th century frame. Measurements: 82 x 62 cm (x2); 97 x 77 cm (frames, x2). This pair of canvases where the portrait of two male characters is shown separately, whose physiognomy indicates their short stature. The two figures are presented standing against an ochre background which gives them greater monumentality and importance. In both, despite the compositional differences, both are portrayed in jocular attitudes, in one case carrying pots and in the other a bottle of wine which they spill on the ground. Despite this, in both the artist has tried to portray both characters with a sense of dignity given by the fixed gaze towards the viewer. The influence of Teniers and other Netherlandish painters admired by Alenza can be seen in the skilful caricature-like characterisation of the figures. Popular flavour and political criticism are masterfully combined in this group of works. Leonardo Alenza began his training by learning drawing with Juan Antonio Ribera and attending the colouring and composition classes given by José de Madrazo at the San Fernando Royal Academy. In 1842 he was appointed academician of merit of San Fernando. He specialised in small-format genre paintings, as well as portraits full of life in which he knew how to endow his models with expressiveness and psychological depth. An outstanding renovator of the Madrid costumbrista school, his vision is critical of society, taking pleasure in reflecting conflictive aspects of life, as opposed to the kindly vision of his Andalusian contemporaries. A great draughtsman, gifted with an astonishing ease of execution, he was capable of sketching any scene that passed before his eyes with great economy of means, which enabled him to collaborate as a draughtsman in important publications of the time. His oil paintings are characterised by their loose, blotchy execution, as well as by his masterly handling of light and his mastery of colour. His palette is dominated, as we can see here, by brown and muted tones, a legacy of the more sober Goya, that of the "Black Paintings", which he also resembles in the subject matter chosen for many of his works. In fact, Aureliano de Beruete considered him to be the most important of the painters influenced by Goya. His is a loose brushstroke, which shapes the image with expressive patches of colour. He does not describe, but focuses on the faces of the figures, which are almost expressionistic in their treatment. Leonardo Alenza is widely represented in the Prado Museum, and also has works in the Romantic and Municipal Museums of Madrid, the National Library, the Lázaro Galdiano and the Marquis of Cerralbo.
