A splendidly illustrated volume by the artist William Alexander (1767-1816), renowned for his graphic skill and historical-ethnographic approach to China, developed also through his post at the British Museum. As a draughtsman, Alexander took part in the Macartney diplomatic mission to China (1792-1793), organised by the East India Company to open new Chinese ports to British trade. After contributing drawings to the official account of the expedition, he published several works on Chinese customs. This work ; similar but more comprehensive than Mason's The Costume of China ; offers an encyclopaedic view of Chinese society at the time, covering not only dress and portraiture but also occupations, pastimes, religious rites, and corporal punishments, all based on direct observation. 4to (235 × 160mm). 50 hand-coloured numbered plates including frontispiece and engraved title-page (occasional light foxing). Subjects include: Leeds Caste; Conway Castle; Dover Castle; Eltham Church, Kent; Dent-de-Lion Gatehouse, Margate; Chapel of Joseph of Arimathea, Glastonbury; Canterbury Castle variously signed, inscribed and dated various sizes, all unframed (24) Provenance: Edward Hughes (1823-1913), thence by descent Literature: Susan Legouix, Image of China: William Alexander, London, 1980 Edward Hughes' son Charles Hughes was married to Cordelia Alexander the daughter of Thomas Alexander and 1st cousin of William Alexander. In her monograph, Image of China: William Alexander, London, 1980, Susan Legouix writes, 'When Alexander died in 1816 he was staying with his uncle, Thomas Alexander, and it was Thomas's grandson Edward Hughes who was responsible for keeping together a number of drawings and papers connected with the artist and who safely deposited in the British Museum his manuscript account of the embassy to China and his self portrait. In more recent times Gerald Hughes of York, a nephew of Edward, actively collected drawings by Alexander which he bequeathed to Maidstone Muesum.' A number of the English drawings are reproduced in Legouix's book including the Dent-de-Lion Gatehouse near Margate in the present lot.

WILLIAM ALEXANDER (1767 - 1816) English painter, illustrator and engraver. He accompanied Lord Macartney to China (1792), and made drawings of the scenery and life there. L.S.,1p. 4to., London, Apr. 23, 1814, to James Christie, Esq, Pall Mall, a petition to make a change in the Artists Benevolent Fund. In part: "…We the undersigned Subscribers to the Artists Benevolent Fund to solicit your assistance in rescuing this Fund from its present administration and to restore it to the general purpose which induced us to give it our support; and we particularly request that you will attend the general meeting…at the Freemasons Tavern…" Also signed by five other artists, including JOHN LANDSEER (1769-1852), and EDWARD BLORE (1787-1879).

(Lacking half-title as often, occasional spotting, some offsetting onto text leaves.) Contemporary morocco, covers paneled in gilt and blind, spine in 6 compartments with 5 raised bands gilt (some wear to extremities, joints starting). Provenance: Richard Jones Higgins (gift inscription on pastedown). FIRST EDITION with the plates in the colored state. Abbey calls for plates 6-9 in the first state before letters; in this copy, they are in the second state with letters. Alexander travelled to China as draughtsman with Lord Macartney's Embassy to the Emperor in 1792-4. Abbey Travel, 534; Colas 74.
