Alken' (lower left), 71 x 91 cm.  Provenance:  Anon. sale, Sotheby's, London, 23 June 1971, lot 141.  with Frost and Reed, London [no.47152].  with MacConnal-Mason, London.  The collection of Baron Stanley Kalms (1931-2025);  Thence by descent.  Note:  Samuel Henry Alken was the eldest son of Henry Thomas Alken, and grandson of Samuel Alken Senior. Known as 'Henry Alken Junior', he worked in both oil and watercolour, in a style similar to that of his father. He tended to paint in sets and usually focussed on sporting scenes. His hunting scenes were particularly popular, although he also painted several minority sports including prize-fighting, cock-fighting and bull-baiting.
