ABDULRAHIM APABHAI ALMELKAR (1920-1982), UNTITLED, GOUACHE ON BOARD, INDIA, SIGNED AND DATED ALMELKAR 78 LOWER RIGHT, 1978 Composed as a densely patterned vertical scene, the painting presents two tall female figures in the foreground, their dark faces shown in three-quarter view with large almond eyes, aquiline noses, and pursed lips. Both women balance vessels and winnowing fans upon their heads, one supporting a stacked arrangement of baskets and a small ochre pot, the other bearing a shallow tray. They are richly adorned with hoop earrings, nose rings, beaded chokers and tasselled ornaments, their hair drawn back and dressed with a pink blossom. One wears a red bodice patterned with dark spots; the other a striped green and blue garment with a pale drape falling in broad curves. Between and before them, a smaller pale-skinned child is cradled in a sling of white cloth, gazing outward. The background opens into a schematic interior of geometric wall panels, doorways, and decorative motifs in ochre, red and deep blue, punctuated by stylised birds, floral sprigs and hanging fans. Signed and dated in Devanagari script at lower right. The subject belongs to Almelkar's sustained engagement with the tribal and rural communities of western India, in particular the Warli, Bhil and Adivasi peoples of Maharashtra and Gujarat, whose women he depicted repeatedly as carriers of domestic labour and maternal presence. The two women here, shown with their household vessels and winnowing implements, are read within this iconography as figures of village life, their heavy silver jewellery and layered textiles marking regional identity rather than individual portraiture. The child carried in the swaddling cloth introduces the maternal register that runs through much of the artist's figurative production of the 1970s. Almelkar, born in Bombay in 1920 and trained at the Sir J.J. School of Art, developed a distinctive idiom that drew on Indian miniature traditions, folk and tribal visual vocabularies, and the flat, decorative surface treatment associated with the Bombay school of the mid-twentieth century. His work is characterised by strong outline, saturated pigment applied in gouache or tempera, and the compression of figures against densely ornamented grounds in which architectural, floral and animal motifs are woven into a unified decorative field. Gouache on board or paper was his preferred medium, allowing the matte density of colour and the crisp graphic contour that define his mature style. The 1978 date places this work in his late period, by which time the vocabulary of stylised faces, elongated eyes and patterned interiors had settled into its most confident form. This painting exemplifies Almelkar's late manner, in which the ethnographic subject of the Adivasi woman is absorbed into a wholly decorative pictorial language. It stands as a representative example of the artist's synthesis of folk observation and modernist surface, a synthesis that secured his position among the independent figures of post-Independence Indian painting who worked outside the Progressive Artists' Group while drawing on comparable sources. Some of his paintings were finished with the paste of cowrie shells for surface shine. Amelkar travelled to the Vidharbha jungles to sketch trees and birds as well as the local, tribal inhabitants. This mixed media gouache shows two (fringe-eared or scimitar-horned) Oryx standing beneath two trees. The image is quite fanciful; the trees have red trunks and immense white flowers and leaves, which are surrounded by wave-like forms and apparently blue mountains in the background. The energy present in flowing forms is unceasingly pleasant. Amelkar exhibited throughout India, including Mumbai, Hyderabad, Calcutta and Chennai and won the Gold medal at the Bombay Art Society in 1953-54. He also exhibited abroad including Singapore in 1965. His work can be found in the permanent collection of the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi. Amelkar exhibited throughout India, including Mumbai, Hyderabad, Calcutta and Chennai and won the Gold medal at the Bombay Art Society in 1953-54. He also exhibited abroad including Singapore in 1965. His work can be found in the permanent collection of the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi.
