Entlang der Einfassungslinie beschnitten, links noch mit schmalem Rändchen. Insgesamt tadellos erhalten Exceptionally beautiful and clear impression. Trimmed along the borderline, with a small margin remaining on the left. Overall in impeccable condition Erläuterungen / Comments Das seltene, in der Literatur um 1516-18 datierte Blatt steht im Kontext von Altdorfers Arbeiten für den Triumphzug Maximilians. Besonders zu seinen sogenannten Tross-Holzschnitten lassen sich hier Bezüge herstellen. Zugleich klingt in dem kleinen Einblattholzschnitt jedoch auch ein Echo von Dürers bekanntem, um 1501 entstandenen Kupferstich eines stehenden Fahnenschwingers an. In beiden Darstellungen ist die das Bild dominierende Figur ganz nach vorne gerückt. Dürers karge und weite Küstenszenerie ist hier jedoch einer mit Bäumen bestandenen Landschaft gewichen, die links eine Ortschaft mit Kirchturm zeigt. Statt wie bei Dürer vor einem leeren Himmel, steht Altdorfers Fähnrich vor einem mit Wolken und engen Schraffuren bedeckten Firmament, wobei der an eine Federzeichnung erinnernde Schwung der Linien wohl eines der charakteristischsten Merkmale von Altdorfers Holzschnittkunst ist. The rare sheet, dated in the literature to around 1516-18, stands in the context of Altdorfer's work for the Triumph of Maximilian. In particular, connections can be made here to his so-called baggage train woodcuts. At the same time, however, this small single-leaf woodcut also echoes Dürer's well-known engraving of a standing standard-bearer, created around 1501. In both depictions, the figure dominating the image is brought right to the front. Dürer's sparse and expansive coastal scenery, however, has here given way to a landscape with trees, showing a village with a church tower on the left. Instead of standing before an empty sky as in Dürer, Altdorfer's standard-bearer stands before a firmament covered with clouds and dense hatching, with the sweeping lines reminiscent of a pen drawing being one of the most characteristic features of Altdorfer's woodcut art. Die sich seit 1519 sprunghaft entwickelnde Wallfahrt zur "Schönen Maria" in der Neuen Kapelle in Regensburg schuf eine Nachfrage nach Andachtsbildern, welche die Pilger gleichsam "für den Hausgebrauch" erwerben konnten. Das wohl technisch anspruchsvollste und innovativste Werk war zweifelsohne Altdorfers grossformatiger, von vier bis fünf verschiedenfarbigen Druckstöcken gedruckter Farbholzschnitt (Bartsch 51; The New Hollstein w.52). Der Kupferstich übersetzt das Motiv ins Kleinstformat. Die kompositorischen Anklänge an italienische, und hier vor allem venezianische Vorbilder ebenso wie die bis hin zu winzigen Details feinste Ausführung legen dabei nahe, dass ein solches Blatt kaum für den Massengebrauch gedacht war, sondern sich stattdessen an eine humanistisch interessierte Bürgerschicht wendete, unter der das Sammeln von Kleinmeistergraphik weit verbreitet war. The miniature depiction is a fine example of the media versatility of printmaking. The rapidly developing pilgrimage since 1519 to the "Schönen Maria" in the New Chapel in Regensburg created a demand for devotional images that pilgrims could acquire "für den Hausgebrauch" The most technically demanding and innovative work was undoubtedly Altdorfer's large-format colour woodcut, printed from four to five differently coloured blocks (Bartsch 51; The New Hollstein w.52). The engraving translates the motif into a miniature format. The compositional echoes of Italian, and especially Venetian, models as well as the finest execution down to the tiniest details suggest that such a sheet was hardly intended for mass use, but rather addressed a bourgeoisie interested in humanism, among whom collecting Little Master prints was widespread.
