  • Amigoni, Jacopo: Narcissus
    Jun. 03, 2026

    Amigoni, Jacopo: Narcissus

    Est: €900 - €1,200

Narcissus. Radierung. 9,5 x 7 cm. "Amigoni". Heller-Andresen 5, Meyers Allgem. Künstler-Lexikon 7. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalogue.

(Venice 1682–1752 Madrid) Portrait of Zenón de Somodevilla y Bengoechea (1702–1781), I Marqués de la Ensenada, three-quarter-length, oil on canvas, 126 x 105.5 cm, framed Provenance: probably collection of Nicolás de Francia y Pascual (1696–1766), I Marqués de San Nicolás, Spain; thence by descent, Cáceres, Spain, until 2024; Private collection, Spain; where acquired by the present owner The present portrait represents Zenón de Somodevilla y Bengoechea (1702–1781), I Marqués de la Ensenada, in a powdered wig, an opulent blue gold-embroidered coat, a red gold-embroidered waistcoat and a broad red sash of high office, corresponding to that of a Distinguished Member of the Royal Order of Saint Januarius. He was a statesman who dominated Spanish government under King Ferdinand VI of Spain (1713–1759). The classical architecture in the background, together with the distant seascape animated by ships, alludes both to the Marqués’s role of state administration and reorganisation of the Spanish navy. He was created marquis in 1736 for his services during the Bourbon campaigns in Southern Italy under the Infante Don Carlos and appointed in 1743 to oversee the ministries of Hacienda, Guerra, Marina and Indias. Ensenada became the most powerful minister of Ferdinand VI’s reign and received the order of the Golden Fleece in 1750. However, he was dismissed from office in 1754 and went into exile. Amigoni’s portrait became of the ‘official’ image of the statesman, a status reflected in the existence of other versions. One version of the present composition is conserved in the Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid (inv. no. P002939), and has been dated to circa 1750 and a second closely related version is conserved in the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya, Barcelona (inv. no. MNAC 11598). When the present portrait is compared to the other versions, the treatment of the sitter’s regalia is of interest. In the version conserved in Barcelona the Order of the Golden Fleece is not present, where as in the Prado version, the insignia is present, but according to a recent analysis it was not part of the original painted conception, but was added at a later stage (see À. Comella, J. Yeguas, Jacopo Amigoni i les rèpliques del «Retrat del marquès de l’Ensenada», updated in July 2022). An examination of the area surrounding the decoration of the Golden Fleece of the present painting shows that the ribbon of the order was also painted over an already completed passage comprising of the white shirt and the red sash, both of which remain beneath this later addition. The X-radiograph further records localised adjustments in the composition, notably in the left lapel and in the yellow-brown ornament at the tip of the hat under his arm. It should be noted that the sitter received the order in 1750 and therefore both the present painting and the Prado version must have been altered slightly later. Therefore the revisions of the present painting distinguish the present work from the Barcelona version, where the decoration is omitted altogether, and align it more closely with the Prado version. Jacopo Amigoni arrived in Spain around 1747, following a distinguished international career that had taken him from Venice to Germany and England before his final move to Spain. Shortly thereafter he was appointed Pintor de Cámara to Ferdinand VI of Spain and later became the first director of the newly founded Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando. In the present work, he deploys the full range of his cosmopolitan experience, combining the ceremonial decorum of Bourbon court portraiture with a luminous, characteristically Venetian palette. The meticulous rendering of brocades, gold braid and velvet contrasts with the supple modelling of the face and hands, achieving a balance between representational authority and painterly refinement. The present, recently rediscovered, portrait is an important example of Bourbon state portraiture executed in mid-18th century Madrid it was painted during the most prestigious phase of Amigoni’s Spanish career.

Attributed to JACOPO AMIGONI (Naples, 1682 – Madrid, 1752) - Madonna and Child

    Est: €9,000 - €10,000

Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 67 × 56 cm. The work depicts the Virgin and Child, one of the most recurring themes in European religious painting. The composition shows Mary holding the Christ Child in an intimate and devotional scene, intended for private contemplation. The affectionate relationship between mother and child is emphasized through delicate gestures and a balanced composition that focuses attention on the figures. The painting is attributed to Jacopo Amigoni, a prominent painter of the late Baroque period and one of the most refined artists of the Italian Rococo. Trained in the Venetian school, Amigoni developed an international career that led him to work in Italy, Germany, England, and Spain, where he eventually settled in Madrid, being appointed court painter to Ferdinand VI. His style is characterized by a luminous palette, elegant figures, and a fluid brushstroke that anticipates the Rococo sensibility. Amigoni's religious compositions combine the Baroque devotional tradition with a softer modeling and a more intimate atmosphere, features that are evident in this work. Batch in international warehouse (within the EU). Intra-EU shipment: no import duties apply within the EU. Export permit from the country of origin may be required.

AMIGONI JACOPO (1682 - 1752) - Sleeping nymph and two satyrs

    Est: €10,000 - €20,000

AMIGONI JACOPO (1682 - 1752). Sleeping nymph and two satyrs. Provenance: Lauro Collection, Bologna. Literature: "Stanze bolognesi: la collezione Lauro", ed. D. Benati and P. Giordani, Bologna 1994, pp. 107–108, cat. 94. The painting belongs to the successful arcadian–pastoral tradition which, in early eighteenth-century Venice, takes on a refined and playful sensuality, transformed by Amigoni’s brush into visions of an aetas felicior, where humanity—still unrestrained by the conventions of civil society—seems to abandon itself freely to its impulses. The work finds a direct parallel in Pan and Syrinx at the State Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg (oil on canvas, 164 × 125 cm, inv. GE-10369), datable to the second decade of the century; yet numerous comparisons support the attribution, beginning with the Sleeping Venus Surrounded by Cupids, formerly in the Morandotti collection in Rome, clearly echoed here in the pose and modelling of the nymph. In the present painting, the softness of the nymph’s flesh tones and the clear light enveloping her body heighten the scene’s sensual grace, while the two satyrs, despite their feral nature, retain an almost childlike lightness, contributing to that synthesis of narrative elegance and luminous seduction which constitutes one of the most recognisable and celebrated hallmarks of Jacopo Amigoni’s art.. 128 x 102,50 cm.

ALLEGORIE DES GESANGS Öl auf Leinwand. 72 x 101 cm. Literatur: Dario Succi, Dipinti di antichi maestri italiani. Kat.Nr. 39. Scarpa Sonino, Jacopo Amigoni, Soncino 1994, Nr. 39  A.R. (1450931) (11) Jacopo Amigoni, 1682 Venice – 1752 Madrid ALLEGORY OF SONG Oil on canvas. 72 x 101 cm. Accompanied by expert’s reports by Dario Succi, Gorizia, and Egidio Martini, each in copy. The previous opinion that this is an Allegory of Music must be corrected here. Neither musical instruments nor musical interplay are visible. The great significance of the painting is evident from the fact that Amigoni portrayed the then world-famous singer Farinelli several times. This also lends meaning to the allegorical depiction of the putto. Whether the castrato Farinelli is meant in the entire depiction remains unanswered. One of the accompanying expert opinions dates the painting to the mid-1740s (Succi). However, the work may have been created in England a few years earlier. A similar depiction of a putto appears in the famous Farinelli portrait (1734 – 35, National Museum of Art of Romania), which also features a hymn book visible from below. GEBURT DES ADONIS Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 99 x 124 cm. In ornamental reliefiertem Rahmen. The artist, who was born in Naples and died in Madrid, studied in Venice and was one of the most important Venetian Rococo painters. He worked in Germany, London, Venice and Madrid and created numerous portraits. The lady is seated upright, turned to the left, with a self-confident but friendly gaze from large, grey-blue eyes towards the viewer. The light falls from the top left, illuminating her face and bust in particular. A small blue scarf lies on the white powdered hair of her wig and she wears a large pearl earring in her ear. The lady is wearing a light-coloured, slightly gold-shimmering silk dress with a lacy, deep and very wide neckline, from the edge of which white lace protrudes. A brooch is attached to the neckline. A wide, blue velvet coat with a purple lining is draped over her right shoulder and rests over her left forearm. The neutral brownish background behind the lady on the right is brightened by the light. Oil on canvas, 85 × 65 cm

Baroque painting: Jacopo Amigoni (1682 - 1752), The Mystical Marriage of St Catherine

    Est: -

Baroque painting: Jacopo Amigoni (1682 - 1752), The Mystical Marriage of St Catherine Oil on canvas in a stuccoed ornate frame painted in gold. Depiction of St Catherine being given a ring by the infant Jesus. The legend of St Catherine of Alexandria tells how the noble saint, in search of a husband to match her nobility, beauty, knowledge and wealth, is referred to Christ by a hermit. In a dream, after she has been baptised, he appears to the saint and - as a symbol of mystical union - puts the ring on her head. The Madonna, dressed in a red robe and blue cloak, holds the child, dressed only in a cloth, on her lap. St Catherine is kneeling on the left in front of the two, her right hand outstretched towards the ox hovering between them, the other placed against her heart. Very finely worked and detailed against a dark background. Frame with plaque: "Amigoni J. / 1675 - 1752" Dimensions: frame dimensions approx. 91 x 104 cm, picture dimensions approx. 69 x 83 cm. Good condition with signs of age and use, craquelure and small colour flaking, frame with cracks and losses. Provenance: from a southern German private collection. Amigoni was an Italian painter, fresco artist, draughtsman and engraver of the late Baroque and Rococo periods. He belongs to the Venetian school of painting and, together with Sebastiano Ricci and Giovanni Antonio Pellegrini, is considered one of the first Rococo painters. As he worked in half of Europe in the course of his artistic career, Amigoni played an important role in the international spread of the new style. Amigoni was one of the most important Italian portraitists of the first half of the 18th century. He lived and worked in Germany (mainly southern Germany) from 1711-1729, where he became the undisputed pioneer of the Rococo style.

Jacopo Amigoni (Naples or Venice 1682 - Madrid 1752) Portrait of Maria Barbara of Braganza, Queen of Spain, with Her Dog Oil on canvas 82,5 x 64,5 cm The canvas finds specific stylistic and physiognomy references to the Queen of Spain, with the portrait held in the collection of the Marquis of Canossa. It should be dated to the five years between Amigoni's arrival in Spain in 1747 and his death in Madrid on 22 August 1752.
