Joe Andoe is an American painter and author known for his austere depictions of horses, landscapes and solitary objects. Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on December 5, 1955, he uses a signature reductive technique that involves applying a thick layer of oil paint to a canvas and etching outlines of his designs by wiping the paint away. His work is heavily inspired by photographs and his upbringing in the Great Plains.

Biography

Born into a part-Cherokee farming family, Joe Andoe is an American painter and author who originally studied agricultural business in college. After discovering artists Robert Smithson and Dennis Oppenheim, he attended the University of Oklahoma in 1981 to earn an MFA.

In 1982, he moved to New York, falling into the post-modern figurative painting scene and creating images of monochromatic urban landscapes with horses, deer, buffalo and other natural elements inspired by the Old West. Most of his work is rendered from photographs, establishing him as a forerunner for photo-based realism, a technique that's still popular today.
Andoe is lauded for his portrayal of the American Spirit and mood of the

Great Plains. Today, his work is featured at The Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston and the San Diego Museum of Art. He currently lives in New York.
"Since the late '70s, I have fancied myself a landscape painter and a painter of the things that hang around on the landscape," Andoe wrote in his memoir Jubilee City.
