    Catherine Andras, British, 1775-1860, a wax portrait relief of Thomas Eyton Shropshire, dated 1807, the gentleman depicted with ponytail tied with a ribbon, on reverse painted black glass ground, the truncation inscribed and dated C ANDRAS 1807, in convex glazed gilt-metal mounted papier-mâché frame, the reverse with paper indistinctly inscribed in ink Thomas Eyton G G Grandfath [?] Catherine Andras [?] Modeller to Her Majesty (?) the Queen 1808, the portrait - 6.7m high, the frame - 17.1 x 14.7cm  Note: Catherine Andras (1775-1860), was a wax modeller, born in Bristol. On her move to London she worked at The Historical Gallery, 87 Pall Mall, then moved to Great Titchfield Street, and finally returned to Pall Mall. She modelled for James Tassie (q.v.) and exhibited at the Royal Academy 1799-1824. Her first exhibit at the Academy, when her name was incorrectly given as 'Andrews', was a wax portrait of Robert Bowyer (who eventually adopted her). In 1802 she was appointed 'Modeller in Wax' to Queen Charlotte and in the same year was awarded 'The Large Silver Pallet' by the Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufacturers, and Commerce for models in wax of Princess Charlotte and Lord Nelson. She modelled many of her portraits by taking copies in wax from plaster of Paris Moulds. She carried on modelling until 1855.     the wax circa 1790-1795, mounted in glazed papier mache frame, the portrait miniature on ivory, signed and dated in ink to the rear of the gilt composition frame 1815, the frames, 14cm and 23cm high (2) Footnotes Catherine Andras (1775–1860) was an English sculptor best known for her wax models. Born in Bristol, Andras was orphaned at an early age and was adopted by the miniature painter Robert Bowyer and his wife in 1799. Exhibiting in London from 1799 onwards, she was appointed Modeller in Wax to Queen Charlotte in 1802 and was awarded 'The Larger Silver Pallet' by the Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce for her model of Lord Nelson. Works by Andras are displayed in the British Museum and Westminster Abbey.

ANDRAS/1801(?), original gilt-mounted rectangular papier-mache frame, bears inscription on the reverse 253/ in the Exhibition/ Lord Nelson/ by C. Andras 1801/ Miss Sharpe/ Modeler in Wax/ to her Majesty Queen/ Charlotte/ See George Scharf Esqres/ letter. Oval, 105mm (4 1/8in) high Footnotes In December 1800, Nelson sat for the miniaturist Robert Bowyer (this portrait now in the Royal Collection). At the same time, Catherine Andras, adopted daughter of Bowyer, worked up a wax profile. This profile, exhibited at the Royal Academy, 1801, no. 1030, was used in 1805 by Boulton and Kuchler for the Trafalgar medal. In the Bowyer Memorials, the writer of his biographical anecdotes relates that "When Miss Andras was working at the medallion of the hero, the celebrated miniature painter Robert Bowyer happened to be painting the other side of the great Admiral's face upon which Nelson laughingly remarked that he was not used to being attacked in that manner starboard and larboard at the same time". Various casts were made from this original in 1805 and 1812. Whilst the present lot appears to be dated 1801 on the truncation and is inscribed with this date in what appears to be a contemporary hand on the reverse, it has not been possible to prove whether this is the original wax profile of Lord Nelson that was exhibited by Andras at the Royal Academy in 1801 as suggested by the later inscription. Andras exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1799-1824. She was appointed Modeller in Wax to Her Majesty Queen Charlotte in 1801.
