LUKE ANGUHADLUQ (1895-1982) QAMANI’TUAQ (BAKER LAKE) Untitled (Bear), early 1970s coloured pencil and graphite on heavy wove paper, 4.5 x 5.5 in (11.4 x 14 cm) inscribed by the Butlers with their inventory number, "757.78". Provenance Ex. Coll. Jack & Sheila Butler, Qamani’tuaq (Baker Lake) / Toronto; Their sale, Feheley Fine Arts, 1999; Acquired from the above John and Joyce Price, Seattle. This Luke Anguhadluq drawing is delightfully small in scale. According to Jack Butler, who once owned the work, the artist was given small cuts of easy-to-transport paper to take out on the land during the summer. Butler described these works as a practical and creative exercise, allowing Anguhadluq to draw wherever he travelled [1]. 1. Man Thought of His Kayak, 1976 Stonecut and stencil on paper Printed by the Sanavik Co-operative, Baker Lake Edition of 40 Description A celebrated Baker Lake print depicting six overlapping, vividly coloured human profiles crowned by a flowing yellow arc. Irene Avaalaaqiaq Tiktaalaaq uses simplified, symbolic forms and bold colour to express the transmission of thought and creative spirit — a theme central to her body of work exploring imagination and identity within Inuit oral tradition. Signature / Markings Titled, dated, and signed in pencil lower margin; printer’s blindstamp lower right. Dimensions Approx. 50 × 65 cm (19 ¾ × 25 ½ in.) Importance One of the most recognizable Baker Lake prints of the 1970s, Man Thought of Idea exemplifies the community’s shift toward conceptual imagery and abstract representation of storytelling themes. The print is included in numerous institutional collections, including the Winnipeg Art Gallery and the Marion Scott Gallery / Kardosh Contemporary.
