Raul Angiano Valadez - La Espina, 1959

Lot 139: Raul Angiano Valadez - La Espina, 1959

Auction Date: Nov 05, 2020

Estimate: $500 - $800

Description: Raul Anguiano Valadez (Mexican, 1915-2006). La Espina (The Thorn), 1959. Lithograph. Ed. 75/150. Signed and dated lower right. A signed lithograph by Raul Anguiano Valadez of his most famous painting, "La Espina" (1952) in which Anguiano presents a Maya woman seated in profile and gouging a splinter from her foot with a knife. Anguiano subscribed to the Mexican pride in indigenismo and faithfully depicted the Maya and other indigenous Mexican peoples. His signature style favored bold geometrical forms and a Cubist interpretation the human figure popularly featured by the Mexican Muralists. He was beloved for such depictions of indigenous Maya women and once stated that he "sought to glimpse the soul of the Mexican people" through his works. Size: 21.5" L x 28.5" W (54.6 cm x 72.4 cm); 23.75" L x 30.75" W (60.3 cm x 78.1 cm) including margins

By age 19, Anguiano moved from his native Guadalajara to Mexico City where he met the legendary Diego Rivera and Jose Clemente Orozco, and he painted his first mural that same year. At the age of 20, Anguiano became the youngest artist included in an exhibition at the famous Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City. He also would teach art at the National Autonomous University and founded the Popular Graphics Workshop. Angiano's work was featured in over 100 exhibitions throughout the world and resides in such esteemed permanent collections as the Museum of Modern Art in New York City as well as the Vatican. Angiano was among the last of Mexico's modern muralists to have worked with Diego Rivera and be influenced by the Mexican Revolution.

Provenance: private Vaqueiro collection, Clayton, Missouri, USA; acquired via descent from grandmother who purchased from gallery in Mexico City that represented Angiano in the 1970s

Lot 224: Raul Anguiano Valadez (Mexican, 1915-2006) - Colored Etching.

Auction Date: Apr 13, 2020

Estimate: $150 - $300

Description:

Raul Anguiano Valadez (Mexican, 1915-2006) - Colored Etching.

Signed.

24x19.5cm.

Jose Raul Anguiano Valadez was a notable Mexican painter of the 20th century, part of the â??second generationâ? of Mexican muralists which continued the tradition of Diego Rivera, Jose Clemente Orozco and David Alfaro Siqueiros but experimented with it as well. Anguiano was born during the height of the Mexican Revolution, which would inspire a majority of his mural painting. He studied painting in his hometown of Guadalajara before moving to Mexico City to begin his career. His first major exhibition was held at the Palacio de Bellas Artes, at age 20. His works include over 100 individual and collective exhibitions with 50 murals, mostly in Mexico and the United States. As he continued his artistry with aspects of the Mexican muralism movement, he also experimented with other styles such as Cubism, Surrealism and Expressionism, with themes such as clowns and prostitutes. However, his most famous painting is â??La espinaâ? (The thorn) which depicts a Mayan woman digging a thorn out of her foot with a knife. His later works concentrated on depicting Mexico in vivid colors and traditional imagery.
