    Bloomsbury Group.- Anrep (Boris) [2 autograph letters to Clive Bell, describing Anrep's views on Bell's art criticism], 1pp. and 3pp., foldlines, a few creases at corners, approx. 255 x 200mm and 205 x 165mm, 1914. *** A rare and contemporary view on the reception of Clive Bell's art criticism on the international stage. Boris Anrep expresses his views on Clive Bell's theory of formalism and describes his attempt to have Bell's work reviewed in Russia. He worked with Bell in 1912. Boris Anrep was an artist best known for his mosaics in Westminster Abbey and the National Gallery, as well as an acolyte of the Bloomsbury Group. Anrep supported Vanessa Bell and Roger Fry in organising the ground-breaking Second Impressionist Exhibition in 1914, helping to secure works for the exhibition by Russian painters, including Mikhail Larionov and Natalia Goncharova.

    λ BORIS VASILYEVICH ANREP (1883-1969), A LARGE AND RARE MOSAIC PANEL EARLY 20TH CENTURY Of roundel form with depiction of figure of a saint, holding branch above a font, staff and banner to left hand 108cm diameter, 3cm deep Provenance: Commissioned by Augustus John for his house at 28 Mallord Street London in 1919 together with a large overmantel mosaic depicting John and his family. The two were covered up with panelling and only rediscovered when the family who had purchased the property in 1962- redecorated the property in 1970. The overmantel was subsequently removed and sold to the V&A Museum which holds it still (Accession Number A.7PART/1-1971). Anrep was feted for his skill as an artist in mosaics during his lifetime and a close friend of many of the members of the Bloomsbury Group. However he is relatively little known today. Partially this is because his work was commissioned for- and remains in- large institutions such as the National Gallery, Westminster Cathedral and the Bank of England. When his mosaic floors at the National Gallery were completed in 1952 a party was held to celebrate - attendees included T.S. Elliot, Somerset Maugham, Augustus John, Ben Nicholson, Cecil Beaton, Noel Coward and Winston Churchill. Little or any of his mosaic work seems to have appeared at auction. A copy of an annotated image showing the work in situ at 28 Mallord Street London, is available with this lot.

    pen, black ink and watercolour on wove paper, unsigned, sheet size 360 x 255 mm (14.2 x 10 ins) Provenance: From the collection of Lady Ottoline Morrell by descent. Boris Anrep (1883-1969), Russian artist and mosaicist who established his mosaic studio in London in 1911. An important member of the Bloomsbury Group, Anrep assisted Roger Fry with the Russian section of the famous Second Post-Impressionist exhibition in 1912. He was a friend of the Morrells and a frequent visitor to Garsington Manor. With a letter from Annabel Anrep dated October 16th 1998, confirming the attribution of this work by the artist's son Igor Anrep.
