Measurements: 34 x 14 x 8,5 cm. Limited and numbered edition of Bombay Sapphire gin, created in collaboration with designer Ron Arad. Ron Arad is a British-Israeli industrial designer, artist and architect. He studied at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem and then at the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London. His brother is the violist Atar Arad. He began his career designing the "Rover Chair", made from a car seat mounted on a metal frame. In 1981 he co-founded the One Off studio with Caroline Thorman. In 1989 he created Ron Arad Associates and, in 2008, founded Ron Arad Architects. His work is characterized by experimentation with unconventional materials, technologies and forms. He has created iconic pieces such as the Tom Vac chair, the Well Tempered Chair and the Bookworm bookshelf, produced by the Italian firm Kartell. He also designed the Windwand in London and lamps for Swarovski capable of displaying text messages through LED lights. He has been a professor of design in Vienna and at the Royal College of Art in London, where he was also head of the Department of Product Design until 2009. He was appointed Emeritus Professor and elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Arts in 2013. He has received numerous awards, including the title of Royal Designer for Industry in 2002 and the London Design Medal in 2011. His works are present in museums such as the MoMA (New York), the V&A (London) and the Centre Pompidou (Paris).

Ron Arad (b.1951) in collaboration with OKA 'AKO' chair, inscribed 'No Mistakes This Time', from an edition of 10, 2019 Oak, rattan, velvet upholstery, steel, copper 104cm high, 119cm wide Footnote The current lot is one of a limited edition of ten. It was produced in collaboration with the British interior-design brand OKA. OKA was founded in 1999 and specialises in an aesthetic which synergises world design influences and the British country house interior. Here, Arad has made alteration to OKA’s ‘Washakie Chair’. The chairs feature a Native American style ‘dream-catcher’ back, woven in rattan, above an overstuffed seat, and a hand-carved limed oak frame, on tapering and fluted legs. Arad has incorporated a shaped sheet consisting of a matt copper outer layer, and an inner layer of mirrored steel, which reflects and contorts the form of the chair, framing the object within a new context, and transforming how we interact with it. This design approach recalls Ron Arad’s ‘Chair by its Cover’ series of the late 1980’s, wherein he initially began experimenting with encasing chairs in polished steel. In the series, Arad took various forms of seating, from ordinary and commonplace dining chairs to Gerrit Thomas Rietveld’s ‘Zig-Zag’ chair and produced enveloping metal structures to surround them. The result is a dramatic positioning of the object at the centre, which in turn ascribes a sculptural significance to the piece. Each edition is adorned with a painted phrase to the reverse of the chair in Arad’s subversive and tongue-in-cheek style. Such phrases include ‘So Far So Good?’, ‘Some Of The People All Of The Time’, and the reassuring statement boldly applied on the piece offered here for sale; 'No Mistakes This Time'.

Design circa 1989. Two-part construction in cast aluminum and European walnut. 76 x 60/64 x 55 cm. This chair is from a very small series of approximately six pieces, produced by Poltronova in Italy. The chair offered here was purchased directly from the Pesch showroom in Cologne. Many thanks to Caroline Thorman of Ron Arad Studio and the Ammann Gallery for providing clarifying information. The designer and artist Ron Arad is one of the most influential figures in contemporary furniture design. His work is characterized by an experimental exploration of material, form, and construction, questioning both industrial processes and traditional furniture typologies. The 'Split Chair' occupies a special place within his oeuvre. As a radical reinterpretation of the chair, Arad deconstructs the familiar form into a dynamic, fragmented structure that combines function and sculpture. The object exemplifies his design approach, in which the boundaries between design and art are deliberately dissolved. In its experimental openness, it points to central themes in Arad's work: transformation, deconstruction, and the extension of the functional object to an autonomous plastic form.

Industrial designer Ron Arad trained in Jerusalem and London, and throughout his career he has collaborated with prestigious firms such as Kartell, Flos, Artemide, Vitra and Alessi. He has also exhibited his work all over the world, and in fact many of his designs are now in important collections, including the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and the Vitra Design Museum in Germany.
