He held his first solo exhibition in 1981 at the Artema Gallery in Barcelona. Two years later, he participated in the city’s Autumn Salon, and since then he has exhibited his work around the world, in prominent galleries in Spain, Mexico, the Netherlands, Israel, Germany, Belgium, France, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Colombia, and the United States. The central horizontal structure, crossed by Punctures and lines that evoke diagrams or constellations, suggests a suspended mechanism, an orientation or navigation device. As usual with the artist, the work is situated in a hybrid territory between painting, relief and object. The material is not mere support, but memory: wear, time and transformation. This work is situated in a fundamental moment of Riera i Aragó's production, when his plastic language begins to be clearly defined from a poetic and symbolic vocabulary of his own, based on the evocation of travel, exploration and the mechanisms of movement. Made in 1981, the piece belongs to a stage prior to the consolidation of his well-known airplanes, submarines and three-dimensional artifacts, but already fully consistent with that imaginary. The composition, of horizontal format and almost narrative character, unfolds as a sequence of floating signs: eyes, schematic boats, vertical structures, footprints, stains and lines that suggest currents, trajectories or mental maps. There is no unitary scene, but a rhythmic succession of elements that refer to the idea of displacement and observation. The space is open, indeterminate, and functions as a symbolic territory rather than a real landscape. The mixed technique - ink, watercolor and gouache - allows a great gestural freedom and a delicate superimposition of layers. Transparencies, touches of color and loose drawing reinforce the lyrical and experimental character of the work, close to visual calligraphy and automatic writing. This economy of means, combined with great poetic precision, is one of the artist's hallmarks. Riera i Aragó is one of the contemporary Catalan artists with the greatest institutional projection. His work is part of important public collections, including the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya (MNAC), the MACBA (Barcelona), the IVAM (Valencia), the Museo Patio Herreriano (Valladolid), the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Ibiza, the Fundació Vila Casas, the Col-lecció "la Caixa", as well as various municipal collections and private foundations in Spain and Europe. Since in the eighties, Riera i Aragó found his own way, this one bifurcated for two spaces, the marine bottom and the cosmos, to which he imagined respectively furrowed of precarious submarines and zeppelins. Sculptures, paintings and engravings such as the one shown here make up the author's "poetic machinism", which has been shaping an enormous personal universe. They are often objects whose aesthetics are related to that of the submerged wreck, covered with an ancient patina that speaks to us of a forgotten past, or perhaps of a not so fateful future. Painter and sculptor, Josep Riera i Aragó was formed in the Superior School of Fine Arts of Barcelona. He makes his individual debut in 1981, in the Artema gallery in Barcelona. Two years later he participated in the Salón de Otoño of the same city, and since then he has shown his work all over the world, in outstanding galleries in Spain, Mexico, Holland, Israel, Germany, Belgium, France, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Colombia and the United States. His solo exhibitions have been held at the Museum of Ceret (France, 1989), the National Library of Paris (1993), the Museum of Modern Art in Oostende (Belgium, 1997), the Joan Prats Gallery in New York (1998), the Tassende Gallery in Los Angeles (2003) and the Museum of Aalst in Belgium (2006), among others. Since 1983, Riera i Aragó has developed his plastic discourse around machinism, with a symbolic language marked by an interest in air and maritime transport, which he contemplates decontextualized, separated from their original function. At the same time, his plastic language has been enriched by the deepening of the dialogue line/plane and empty/full. Never repetitive, each "machine" he creates evokes, without pathos or condescension, a clear and comprehensive vision of humanity. With a visual vocabulary limited to simple forms reminiscent of zeppelins, submarines or airplanes, Riera i Aragó develops a fertile iconography loaded with meaning that, endowed with a clear irony, speaks of the absurd recklessness of man's creations and the poetic justice that results when these creations turn against him. His work should be understood as a global story, which is related to languages as disparate as astronomy, botany, mathematics or mysticism, and which offers the viewer the possibility of entering a particular universe of great lyricism, where reality and fiction are no longer opposing categories. Riera i Aragó is currently represented in the Museum of Contemporary Art in Barcelona, the Joan Miró, La Caixa and Vicent Van Gogh foundations, the Museum of Modern Art in Luxembourg, the Rufino Tamayo Museum in Mexico, the Ceret and Reattu Museum in Arles, France, the Otani Museum in Japan and the Heilbronn Museum in Germany, among many others.

In this drawing, a helicopter propeller joins a base rooted in the ground and a geometric figure that synthesizes a character upside down. In this early work the author already shows his interest in the machinism associated with the relationship between flight and psychic transformation, which is reflected in the floating figure. Painter and sculptor, Josep Riera i Aragó studied at the Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes de Barcelona. He made his individual debut in 1981, at the Artema gallery in Barcelona.
