Biography

Born in 1963, Michael Aram is a world-famous metalwork sculptor and designer, best known for his intricate metal furniture, homeware and jewelry. He attributes his love of nature, in part, to his Armenian heritage, and incorporates the country's traditions and symbolism into his pieces. His reverence for age-old hand-working traditions was inspired by a trip to India in 1989, where he learned traditional sand-casting and hand-forging techniques.

Famous works include Pomegranate Sculpture, which draws from Armenian cultural symbolism, representing fertility and good fortune. Commemorating his love of nature, the Bark and Branch Collection aims to capture the fragile endurance of bark and tree branches using metal.

On his creative process, Aram says, “There is a tremendous reflection of our humanity in handmade objects. When you make things by hand, somehow that energy, that tension, that passion, all gets absorbed into the object.”
