Set 8 Fornasetti "Arcimboldesca" Porcelain Plates

    Est: $600 - $1,200

Atelier Fornasetti, Italy. Set of eight decorative mid-century porcelain plates in Fornasetti's "Arcimboldesca" pattern, ca. 1980. Depicting painted portraits composed of vegetal forms, after the Italian Renaissance painter, Giuseppe Arcimboldo (Italian, 1526-1593). Each marked and numbered along the underside. Piero Fornasetti (Italian, 1913-1988) was a 20th-century Italian artist and designer known for his whimsical, surrealist imagery, especially his prolific use of the face of opera singer Lina Cavalieri, which became a central motif in his work. Fornasetti porcelain plates, particularly from the "Tema e Variazioni" series, are collectible art objects that blend classical beauty with surreal, often humorous twists, turning everyday tableware into decorative icons. The "Arcimboldesca" pattern draws inspiration from Giuseppe Arcimboldo's composite portraits made of fruits, vegetables, and objects, reflecting Fornasetti's love for visual puns and the fantastical.

Arcimboldo (1526-1593), Circle of, Allegory of Taste, c. 1600

    Est: €6,400 - €8,000

Oil on canvas, relined Prague, circa 1600 Circle of Giuseppe Arcimboldo (1526-1593) - Italian Mannerist painter Gilt wooden frame Dimensions: 88 x 68 cm Provenance: Private collection, Germany An unusual example of the late Renaissance fascination with riddles, puzzles, and the bizarre The present painting is the work of an artist active in the circle of Giuseppe Arcimboldo, and dates from circa 1600. An attribution to Francesco Zucchi (1570-1627) has been suggested in the past. The painting depicts a human figure in profile, composed of different types of fruit, including apples, pears, grapes, pomegranates and figs, before an open background. After the Renaissance artists aimed for a perfectly balanced and harmonic imitation of the nature, Mannerists were interested in a more refined and unusual art: the present allegorical portrait is an interesting and rare example of the typical mannerist fascination for the bizarre and unusual. The painting is mounted in a gilt ornate frame. The canvas has been relined, and the paint surface has been consolidated. On the upper right, there is a superficial scratch and white paint marks. The paint surface shows light abrasions in places. In the upper part of the still life, there is a small tear. Inspection under UV reveals retouching and restoration to the background, as well as areas of retouching to the still life. The frame shows minor wear. The overall dimensions, framed, are 94 x 73 cm. The stretcher measures 88 x 68 cm. Giuseppe Arcimboldo (1526-1593) Born in Milan, Giuseppe Arcimboldo is best known for his paintings, in which flowers, fruits, vegetables and objects are combined to still lifes or portraits. In 1562, Arcimboldo came to the court of Emperor Ferdinand I in Vienna. In 1564, he was appointed court painter to Emperor Maximilian II. In 1570, he was sent to Prague to create a celebrative series with mythological themes for Maximilian. Since 1575, he was court painter to Rudolf II. At the court, he also worked as a musician, costume designer and engineer. In 1587, Arcimboldo went back to his home city of Milan. Today, works by Giuseppe Arcimboldo are on display in major museum collections, such as the Kunsthistorische Museum in Vienna, the Louvre and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
