Edward Ardizzone RA (British, 1900-1979) 'Shelter Scene’, circa 1950s published by the National Gallery, printed by The Baynard Press (76 x 100cm) Footnote: An original lithograph poster by Edward Ardizzone, issued by the National Gallery and printed by The Baynard Press. The work was commissioned by the Ministry of Information's War Artists' Advisory Committee and created while Ardizzone was serving as an appointed Second World War artist. After the initial wave of German bombing raids, Ardizzone was reassigned to the War Office to document scenes related to air raids. His portrayals of daily life inside London’s air raid shelters became some of his most acclaimed wartime images, drawn directly from observation on location. The scene shown here captures the Tilbury Shelter, an extensive network of vaults situated beneath the railway arches in Stepney. During the height of the Blitz, the shelter was believed to accommodate up to 16,000 people on certain nights. Ardizzone created multiple works at this site, which was later also visited and sketched by Henry Moore. Condition Report: Minor repaired tears to edges which will hardly notice once framed.

Original vintage World War Two poster depicting a scene during the Blitz where civilians were brought to Tilbury wine cellar for safety from the Nazi German Air Raids. Commissioned by the War Artists Advisory Committee of the Ministry of Information, Edward Ardizzone (1900-1979) masterfully captures the fear of the families in this crowded cellar, unsure whether anything will be left of their homes after the incessant bombings above the ground. Cellars were commonly used for protection during the war and could accommodate up to 16,000 people during the Blitz. Ardizzone's gentle, intimate use of watercolours with earthy tones of burgundy, beige and browns brings this image to life whilst depicting the desperate times of WWII. Published by the National Gallery. Printed by the Baynard Press. Horizontal. Good condition, creasing, tears, staining, numbered in pencil in bottom right corner. Condition Report: Framed: 52.5 x 65.5cm The signature and title are printed. A little rubbing/ minor abrasions to the lower margin. There are a couple of very small, faint spots of foxing starting to emerge to the unprinted area in front of the passengers seated at the front of the boat. Time staining and foxing to the margins and reverse with a border of discolouration from mount. The lower right corner of the sheet is torn and missing. Brown tape marks to other three corners.
