signed in intaglio on the shade Pâte de verre is an ancient glassmaking technique that originated around 3,500 years ago in Mesopotamian civilization. Though it eventually disappeared, it was revived in 1885 by the French artist Henri Cros. The process involves grinding colored glass into granules, mixing it with a binder, and packing it into a mold before heating it to fuse and shape the piece. Due to the meticulous finishing required, this technique is not suited for mass production. However, it allows for precise color placement, enabling highly expressive and detailed artworks. This auction will feature four pieces by leading pâte de verre artists, Amalric WALTER and Gabriel ARGY-ROUSSEAU .

Circular patinated wrought iron base decorated with beams resting on a tripod base. Signature in recess "G. Argy-Rousseau" circa 1923. Bibliography: - Y. Oval lamp decorated in relief with faces of angry lions and reticles as cages. Glass artist, born in Meslay-le-Vidame. Argy-Rousseau began drawing very early, and also at a very young age he became interested in physics and chemistry, which led him to study first at the École Brequet and later at the École de Sèvres (1902). He graduated in 1906 with a degree in ceramist engineering, and began working in a technical research laboratory. At the École de Sèvres he had met Henri Cros, a pioneer in the use of "pâte-de-verre", and soon his interests would focus on this technique. He devoted himself from then on to the production of artistic glass, and in 1914 he participated for the first time in the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris. He would soon achieve remarkable success, which led him to found his own artistic glass firm in 1921: Société Anonyme des Pâtes de Verre d'Argy-Rousseau. From then on, he produced pieces mainly to order, and patented several new techniques. His works were sold throughout Europe and also in the United States, North Africa and Latin America. However, the economic crisis of 1929-30 led him to close the factory and to establish himself as an independent artist in Paris in 1932. By this time stop using glass paste to focus on the production of enameled glass, more in line with the new taste.

GABRIEL ARGY-ROUSSEAU (France, 1885 - 1953). "Libations Vase, ca. 1924. Pâte de verre. Signed on one side and inscribed "France" on the reverse. With sterling silver foot and mouthpiece, with marks of the Mostany Llopart jewelry store in Barcelona. Same vase model published in: Janine Bloch-Dermant, Les Pâtes de Verre: G. Argy-Rousseau, Catalogue Raisonné, Paris, 1990, pp. 60-61, no. 24.01. Shows marks of use and wear; a hair on the lower right side. Measurements: 30 cm (vase height); 34 cm (total height). Gabriel Argy-Rousseau's libation vase is inspired by Greek ritual vessels intended for libations, although its refined designs worked in relief follow an Art Deco aesthetic. A frieze of radial motifs is arranged in rows around the figure of an Egyptian-inspired offerer: a female bust holding an ointment vessel. The author freely mixes Greek and Egyptian references to assimilate them into his own Deco style in glass paste, a technique in which Argy-Rousseau gained notorious recognition in the interwar period. The artist developed his own formula of pâte de verre to create authentic museum pieces in which he achieved inimitable textures, colors and transparencies. Argy-Rousseau Catalogue Raisonné, Paris, 1990, p. 221, no. 30.01. Measurements: 31 cm (vase height); 36 cm (total height). The "Ancient Warriors" vase by Gabriel Argy-Rousseau is an exceptional piece from the Art Deco period that combines technical mastery in pâte de verre (glass paste) and a historicist theme inspired by the representations of warriors as they were developed on Greek and Etruscan vases. Three figures worked in relief carry spears and shields and an abstract background simulates mountainous profiles. Argy-Rousseau combines a geometrizing figuration that essentializes ancient models while transferring the ancient technique of red figures to the language of glass paste, a technique in which he reached the highest peaks. The French artist uses the technique of pâte de verre with extraordinary precision to achieve colors and transparencies that enhance the details of the warriors. This technique, which involves melting glass in a mold to create complex shapes and textures, allows for visual effects of depth and luminosity, making the figures of the warriors seem to emerge from the glass. Nov. 12, 2024

Gabriel Argy-Rousseau: ART DECO GLASS VASE "LA CHEVELURE HAUT"

    Est: €5,000 - €7,000

ART DECO GLASS VASE "LA CHEVELURE HAUT". Argy-Rousseau, Gabriel. Date: Ca. 1928. Technique: Pâte de verre, translucid mass of glass with magenta and violet inclusions resp. applied glass layer. Description: The vase has a slightly curved wall and a minimally protruding rim. Three stylised female profiles with wavy, long hair all around the wall. Measurement: Height 19cm. Mark: On the sides inscr: "G. Argy-Rousseau", embossed. Mark: On the bottom "France", engraved. Literature: Bloch-Dermant, Janine: G. Argy-Rousseau, Les pâtes de verre, Catalogue Raisonné, Paris 1990. The vase is a beautiful example of the influence of the Art Deco design language in glass art. With its flowing lines and reduced forms, it shows an abstraction of the female profile which, despite the stylisation, expresses the softness of feminine beauty. Alongside animals and floral depictions, depictions of women were among the most popular main themes of Art Deco. GABRIEL ARGY-ROUSSEAU (France, 1885 - 1953). Ashtray, ca. 1925. Paste glass. Signed on the side. Measurements: 3.5 x 9 cm.
