Measurements: 78 x 46 cm. Outstanding painter and lithographer, Armet cultivated the landscape, the genre painting, the portrait and the decorative painting. He began his training at the School of Fine Arts of La Lonja in Barcelona, where he was taught by Ramón Martí Alsina. In the early sixties of the nineteenth century he moved to Rome to further his studies, and there he became friends with Mariano Fortuny. He sent works to national and local exhibitions, being awarded an honorable mention in the National Exhibition of 1864, and a third medal in the edition of 1866. He also exhibited regularly at the Sala Parés in Barcelona, starting in 1877. In 1872 he was awarded in the Official Exhibition of Le Havre, in France, and in 1878 he participated in the Universal Exhibition of Paris. In the field of lithography he made in 1866 a series entitled "La juventud pintada por sí misma" (Youth painted by itself) in the line marked by Eusebio Planas, of which the publication was forbidden. As a decorator, it is worth mentioning the paintings he made for the Café del Liceo in Barcelona. At first his language was ascribed to the pattern of the School of Olot, a town to which he had moved in 1870 fleeing from yellow fever, along with the painters Urgell, Caba and others, collaborating actively with his colleagues in the consolidation of the Olot Art Center. For his landscapes he took sketches from life, which he then transferred to oil, sifted by artificial light. His style of these years is inscribed within the Catalan realist landscape painting, with appreciable Roman influences in his technical preciosity. However, during his last years his style evolved in a line that links with the work of Ramon Casas and the first Picasso. He turned his gaze towards street themes, contemporary and featuring ordinary people, and his brushstrokes acquired a greater fluency and gestural sense. Josep Armet is represented in the Prado Museum and in the Provincial Museum of Girona, among other public and private collections.

Spanish painter and lithographer, José Armet Portanell cultivated the thematic of landscape, genre, portrait and decorative painting. He trained at the School of Fine Arts of La Lonja in Barcelona, where he was a disciple of Ramón Martí Alsina. In the early 1860s he moved to Rome to further his studies, where he became friends with Mariano Fortuny. Among his lithographic production, the series of 1866 entitled "La juventud pintada por sí misma" (Youth painted by itself) stands out. He sent his works to national and local exhibitions, obtaining an honorable mention in the National Exhibition of 1864 and third medal in the edition of 1866, for the canvas Países; he also exhibited regularly in the Sala Parés in Barcelona. In 1878 he sent the work entitled A Landscape of Catalonia to the Universal Exhibition of Paris. As a decorator, the ornamentation of the ceilings that he made for the Café del Liceo in Barcelona stands out. In 1870 he participated, together with Modesto Urgell, Antonio Caba and José Luis Pellicer, in the consolidation of the Artistic Center of Olot, founded by the landscape painter Joaquín Vayreda in 1870. His work is included in the Catalan realist landscape painting with Roman influences for its precious technique. The brushstroke is agile and dynamic, with small touches often loaded with matter. Armet's works were highly appreciated by the painting collectors of his time, and, in addition to private collections, they are preserved today, for example, in the National Museum of Art of Catalonia.

Oil on canvas Signed 60x100 cm Josep Armet i Portanell (Barcelona, 1842 - 1911) was a prominent Catalan painter and lithographer who specialised in landscape painting. He studied at Escola de la Llotja under the guidance of Ramón Martí Alsina, and in 1860 moved to Rome to continue his studies, where he befriended Marià Fortuny. His work is influenced by the so-called Escola d'Olot, known for its dedication to natural and rural landscapes. Armet took part in numerous exhibitions throughout his life, receiving awards in cities such as Madrid, Barcelona and Le Havre. His paintings include urban and rural landscapes, as well as portraits and decorative paintings. Some of his works can be found in important museums such as Biblioteca-Museu Víctor Balaguer in Vilanova i la Geltrú and Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya in Barcelona.

JOSEP ARMET PORTANELL (Barcelona, 1843 - 1911). "Rural houses with a villager". Oil on panel. Signed in the lower left corner. Size: 42 x 27 cm; 59 x 44 cm. (frame). An outstanding painter and lithographer, Armet cultivated landscape, genre, portrait and decorative painting. He began his training at the La Lonja School of Fine Arts in Barcelona, where he was taught by Ramón Martí Alsina. In the early 1960s he moved to Rome to further his studies, where he became friends with Mariano Fortuny. He submitted works to national and local exhibitions and was awarded an honourable mention at the National Exhibition of 1864 and a third medal at the 1866 edition. He also exhibited regularly at the Sala Parés in Barcelona from 1877 onwards. In 1872 he was awarded a prize at the Official Exhibition in Le Havre, France, and in 1878 he took part in the Universal Exhibition in Paris. In the field of lithography, in 1866 he produced a series entitled "La juventud pintada por sí misma" ("Youth Painted by Itself") along the lines of Eusebio Planas, the publication of which was banned. As a decorator, it is worth mentioning the paintings he produced for the Café del Liceu in Barcelona. At first his language followed the style of the Olot School, a town to which he had moved in 1870 to escape the yellow fever, together with the painters Urgell, Caba and others, actively collaborating with his colleagues in the consolidation of the Centro Artístico Olotino (Olot Artistic Centre). For his landscapes he took sketches from life, which he then transferred to oils, filtered by artificial light. His style during these years is part of Catalan realist landscape painting, with appreciable Roman influences in his technical preciosity. However, during his last years his style evolved along lines that were linked to the work of Ramon Casas and the first Picasso. He turned his gaze towards contemporary street themes, featuring ordinary people, and his brushstrokes acquired a greater looseness and gestural sense. Josep Armet is represented in the Museo del Prado and the Museo Provincial de Girona, among other public and private collections.

Josep Armet made this work during his stay in Cantabria, where he painted the port of Laredo and the town of Limpias, in 1886. In the present canvas he depicts an everyday landscape, with a loose and impastoed style, which reflects the atmospheric values of a fleeting and unrepeatable instant. The play of lines and planes reinforces the monumental dimension of nature as opposed to the smallness and insignificance of man, something clearly romantic.
