"The lesbians who were marrying each other agreed to being photographed on their wedding day, but insisted that I photograph the whipping of the man who was part of the celebration. He would come to the wedding for his whipping and bring his own whips in his flute case (he was a flautist with one of the great orchestras). I photographed him in his old-fashioned bathing cap, child’s rubber training pants and petticoat being whipped by the bridal pair after the girl he had loved walked on his belly in stiletto heels". -- Eve Arnold Provenance: Bonhams, 3 November 1993, Eve Arnold Photographs: "The Private Eye".

EVE ARNOLD (1912–2012)| Marilyn accompanied by Illinois State Police as her honour guard, Bement 1955 Image Size: 39,5 x 55,5 cm English: Gelatin silver print, printed 1989 on double-weight semi-matte paper 50,7 x 60,5 cm, in excellent condition. From original "In our Time" exhibition set. Magnum's exhibition blindstamp in the margin at lower right, Magnum's copyright stamp with facsimile signature on the reverse. LITERATURE William Manchester (ed.), In our Time. The world as seen by Magnum photographers, London 1989, p. 33. Eve Arnold accompanied Marilyn Monroe on a multi-day trip through several US-states in 1955, during which the intrusiveness of fans required police protection. It was her second of a total of six photo assignments, during which Monroe developed a special trust in the photographer. Arnold succeeded in taking particularly intimate yet respectful photographs that deviated from the image usually conveyed of the childlike, naïve sex symbol. *Item is fully Taxed Deutsch: Silbergelatineabzug, geprintet 1989 auf halbmattem "double-weight" Papier 50,7 x 60,5 cm, in ausgezeichnetem Zustand. Aus originalem "In our Time" Ausstellungsset. LITERATUR William Manchester (Hg.), In our Time. The world as seen by Magnum photographers, London 1989, S. 33. *Vollbesteuert.

At the time of recording at Columbia Record’s studios in November 1952, Dietrich was working on a comeback. It was a cold and rainy night and work could not begin until midnight, on the advice of her astrologer who joined her. She was the first star Eve Arnold extensively photographed ‘in action’. The photographer accompanied all phases of the production until 6 o’clock in the morning. Although Dietrich demanded retouching, Arnold refused. This photograph was published (among others of the series) in the magazine Esquire, establishing her success with candid, ‘unretouched’ celebrity portraits.

EVE ARNOLD (1912–2012) | Marlene Dietrich, New York 1952 | Vintage silver print, double-weight semi-matte paper, in fine condition 21,5 x 29,6 cm Photographer’s agency stamps, negative no. stamp “52-2-12”, handwritten “Rollei” and other annotations in pencil on the reverse The 40-year-old Arnold received her first professional assignment, a photo story on Marlene Dietrich during recordings, through Magnum in 1952. She accompanied the singer during recordings, rehearsals and breaks and was deeply impressed by Dietrich’s professionalism, which is also clear from her pictures. This was a new angle at a time when female stars were usually staged as admirable but unattainable, passive creatures in the studio. When Arnold presented Marlene Dietrich with the proofs, she pulled out her eyebrow pencil and marked what she wanted retouched. Arnold, however, only left out a few unflattering shots and submitted her prints without corrections; they were published worldwide, eventually appreciated by Dietrich as well, and laid the foundation for a successful career that Arnold pursued into old age.
