Description: The depiction shows a studio with a somewhat elderly artist wearing a flat cap and brown jacket and an exposed lady with hat and garter. The artist looks at the young woman, obviously his new nude model, with a delighted, lascivious look, the lady's heavily made-up face shows a coquettish smile. Framed. GERMAN ARNOLD, KARL 1883 Coburg - 1953 München Zwei sitzende Herren mit Hund R. u. monogrammiert. Unterhalb der Darstellung schwer lesbar betitelt "[...] heraus" und 1920 datiert. L. u. von fremder Hand nummeriert. Rücks. in Rot nummeriert 4779 und Klebeetikett mit Nummerierung 3914. Tusche in Schwarz und blauer Buntstift auf Bütten. 23 x 32,5 cm. Min. gebräunt. Min. fleckig. Rahmen. Karl Arnold arbeitete als Karikaturist seit 1907 für die Zeitschrift "Simplicissimus", nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg wurde er Teilhaber dieser Zeitschrift. Er gründete mit Thomas Theodor Heine die Vereinigung Münchner Graphiker "Die Mappe", daneben schuf er vorwiegend Karikaturen für verschiedene weitere Zeitschriften.

Karl Arnold has managed to capture the character and the characters of his time in an ironic and masterly manner. The drawing “Read the Newspaper“ proves this impressively. It shows a mischievously looking, respectable gentleman who sits in his armchair and is comfortably reading his newspaper. A dog is sleeping at his feet. Another reader sits smoking in an armchair behind him. Maybe the one in the seat at the front is telling the one behind about something amusing he has read in his papers. The coloured drawing is in good condition; only a minor spot can be seen in the middle underneath the drawing. The frame is new and without fault. The drawing is monogrammed in the lower right “CKA” and measures 41 x 60 cm in frame and 23.5 x 32.5 cm without frame. Karl Arnold (1883-1953) Karl Arnold studied drawing and modeling at the Ducal Industry and Trade School in Neustad before he began to study at the Academy in Munich in 1901. He visited the drawing class under Karl Raupp and later studied at the painting class under Ludwig von Löfftz and Franz von Stuck. He began drawing for the Simplicissimus in 1907 and soon worked for several other known papers. Karl Arnold was one of the most important German caricaturists of the early 20th Century. Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
