BALTHASAR VAN DER AST (Middelburg circa 1593–1657 Delft) Bouquet of flowers in a Wan-li vase with a lizard. 162[...]. Oil on copper. Signed and dated lower left: B. Van deR Ast . fe 162[...]. 27.9 × 21.8 cm. Provenance: - Leonard Koester collection, London. - Auction Christie's, London, 23 April 1993, lot 191. - Auction Sotheby's, London, 29 October 1998, lot 47. - Swiss private collection. - Auction Koller, Zurich, 27 March 2009, lot 3029. - Private collection, Germany. - Auction Hampel, Munich, 11 April 2013, lot 605. - European private collection. Exhibited: - London 1960, Leonard Koetser, Spring Exhibition, cat. no. 7. - Lemgo 2017–2026, long-term loan Weserrenaissance-Museum Schloss Brake. This colourful flower still life, signed and dated 1620, by Balthasar van der Ast was most recently on loan to the Weserrenaissance-Museum in Lemgo, North Rhine-Westphalia. It is an early work, created in Utrecht, where Van der Ast is documented as a member of the Guild of Saint Luke. His oeuvre was shaped not only by his brother-in-law and teacher Ambrosius Bosschaert the Elder (1573–1621); the city also offered a stimulating cultural environment in which, alongside Roelant Savery (1576–1639), the three sons of Bosschaert the Elder also settled. Van der Ast's large number of paintings from the 1620s thus demonstrates how stimulating Utrecht had become as a new centre for still-life painting. The bouquet offered here dates from this period and belongs to a group of approximately fifteen small-format flower still lifes presented in Wan-li vases. A signed example closest to our work is in a private collection in the USA (oil on panel, 36.3 × 27.7 cm, see S. Segal: Flowers and Nature, Amsterdam 1990, p. 191, ill. 35b). Particularly noteworthy is the elaborate decoration of the Wan-li vases, which varies from one example to another and displays a range of motifs. Drawing on Bosschaert's elaborate flower still lifes, Van der Ast developed his painting further, creating a lively atmosphere through a reduced, more delicate palette and a certain lightness in the bouquets. While his teacher devoted himself to the faithful rendering of his subject, the young artist imbued his still lifes with intimacy and elegance, animating them through their accompanying details. Butterflies, lizards and other animals are therefore frequently embedded in the compositions, as the present example also demonstrates. Through this outstanding refinement, Balthasar van der Ast became one of the most important still-life painters of 17th-century Dutch painting. This painting is registered in the RKD, The Hague, under no. 50548. ------------------------------------------------- BALTHASAR VAN DER AST (Middelburg um 1593–1657 Delft) Blumenstrauss in einer Wan-li Vase und mit einer Eidechse. 162[...].

(Middleburg 1593/94–1657 Delft) A basket of grapes, apples, cherries, pears and other fruits, with roses, a tulip, a melon and red currants on a ledge with a dragonfly and other insects, signed and dated lower right: .B.vander.ast.fe.1624, oil on panel, 34.5 x 57 cm, framed Provenance: with Galerie Abels, Cologne, circa 1950 (according to a label on the reverse); art market, Germany; where acquired by the present owner Literature: L. J. Bol, The Bosschaert Dynasty. Painters of flowers and fruit, Leigh-on-Sea 1960, p. 78, no. 68 (as Balthasar van der Ast) Balthasar van der Ast was a central figure in the development of Dutch still-life painting in the early seventeenth century. Born in Middelburg, he trained with his brother-in-law Ambrosius Bosschaert I (1573–1621), whose meticulously arranged compositions of flowers and fruit laid the foundations of the genre. Following Bosschaert’s death in 1621, van der Ast continued this tradition alongside his nephews, working successively in Middelburg, Utrecht, and Delft, where he settled permanently. His work forms a bridge between the precise, decorative manner of early flower painting and the more naturalistic tendencies that would come to define later Dutch still life. Van der Ast’s paintings are distinguished by their refined compositions, soft, diffused lighting, and an exceptional sensitivity to surface and texture. Grapes, shells, insects, and blossoms are rendered with remarkable precision, yet always integrated into a harmonious whole. Beyond their descriptive brilliance, his works often carry a subtle moral dimension, alluding to the transience of earthly beauty and the underlying order of creation. Painted in 1624, the present composition is a characteristic example of the artist’s mature early style. Set against a neutral background, a wicker basket overflows with apples, grapes, cherries, and plums, enlivened by curling vine leaves. In the foreground, roses, a striped tulip, red currants, a split walnut, and additional fruit are carefully arranged, while a dragonfly perches delicately on a tendril, introducing a sense of movement and fragility. The composition is structured around a subtle pyramidal form, anchored by the basket and extended outward through the arrangement of fruit and flowers. Van der Ast’s controlled brushwork captures the play of light across smooth skins, translucent petals, and reflective surfaces, while slight irregularities lend the scene a natural vitality. Although still indebted to the Bosschaert tradition in its cool tonality and clarity, the painting reveals a growing independence in its freer handling and observational nuance. The inclusion of the dragonfly and hints of decay introduces a quiet vanitas element, reminding the viewer of the fleeting nature of life and beauty. Executed during the artist’s Utrecht period, the work exemplifies van der Ast’s ability to combine scientific observation with poetic restraint, transforming a carefully composed still life into a meditation on time, nature, and the divine order.

Balthasar van der Ast (Midelburg, 1594 - Delft, 1657) Attributed - Still Life with Basket of Fruit (c. 1627)

    Est: €200,000 - €250,000

Oil on panel. Dimensions: 38.4 x 52 cm. Signed and dated in the lower left corner: “B. van der Ast f. 1642”. The abundant basket of fruit that dominates the composition is not merely decorative, but rather partakes of the complex moral and religious symbolism characteristic of 17th-century Dutch still lifes. The fruits, arranged with careful balance both within the basket and on the table, acquire a hierarchical meaning that reinforces the spiritual message of the scene. Peaches, apricots, and bunches of grapes, associated with the redemption of sins, partially cover an apple, a traditional symbol of original sin. In the foreground appear other fruits also imbued with symbolic resonance: walnuts, whose interior recalls the flesh of Christ and whose shell alludes to the wood of the Cross; cherries, evoking Paradise; the pear, linked to the Virgin Mary; and the melon, which refers to earthly pleasures. To this spiritual dimension is added the theme of vanitas, suggested by the presence of insects: the butterfly alludes to the fragility of life, while the fly perched on the fruit introduces the idea of the corruption of matter. In this way, the cycle of the seasons and the abundance of fruit become a reflection on the fleeting nature of existence, the inevitability of death, and, at the same time, the promise of resurrection. From a stylistic point of view, the work belongs to the pictorial tradition developed by Balthasar van der Ast, one of the leading specialists in still lifes of the early 17th century. Trained alongside his brother-in-law Ambrosius Bosschaert, Van der Ast worked in Utrecht and later in Delft, where he developed refined compositions characterized by the meticulous depiction of objects, the clarity of the neutral background, and the careful arrangement of flowers, fruits, shells, or exotic porcelain, reflecting the commercial and maritime power of the Dutch Republic. However, the painting also exhibits close affinities with the early work of Jan Davidsz. de Heem, one of the great masters of Baroque still life. Born in Utrecht in 1606, De Heem began his career around 1626, at which point his pictorial language still shows a marked dependence on the style of Van der Ast. In fact, several studies have suggested the possibility that the young artist received some form of training in Van der Ast's circle during the years Van der Ast was active in Utrecht, between 1619 and 1632. De Heem's early still lifes display such a remarkable stylistic proximity to the works of the older master that they have sometimes been mistaken for them. In this respect, the present still life fully fits within that shared artistic context, both in the arrangement of the fruit and in the delicacy of the execution and the descriptive precision of the elements.According to specialist Fred Meijer, who proposed a possible attribution to Jan Davidsz. de Heem based on photographs, the painting could be dated to around 1627–1628, a period when the artist was producing compositions closely linked to the style of Van der Ast. The signature “B. van der Ast” and the date “1642,” possibly added later, should be interpreted within this framework of stylistic proximity between the two painters, particularly evident in the early phase of De Heem's career. 38,5 x 52 cm. Rechts unten signiert und datiert „1642“. In Louis XV-Rahmen. Quinces, cherries, walnuts, grapes, apples, peaches, and vine leaves adorning the vacant space around the basket testify to the artist’s joy in shaping surfaces and making them appear vibrant. In any case, a fly placed on the bright side of a peach, catching the viewer’s eye particularly well, is also rather lively. Notes: cf. In addition to the baskets that he filled with flowers, there are also fruit still lifes or combinations of both in van der Ast’s ouevre. BALTHASAR VAN DER AST , (MIDDELBOURG, 1593 - DELFT, 1657) Still life, fruit basket Oil on panel 38.5 x 52 cm The profusion of this appetising fruit basket should not, however, obscure its religious message. Harmoniously arranged, either in the basket or on the table, these fruits are also skilfully distributed. Imbued with symbolic value, each one has a precise meaning and a hierarchical place that amplifies its message and role. Dominating the composition, peaches, apricots and bunches of grapes, symbols associated with the redemption of sins, cover an apple, the fruit of temptation, which represents original sin. Beyond this basket and this eschatological postulate, the fruits associated with the divinity are distributed in the foreground with, in the centre, the walnuts, Christ-like symbols whose flesh evokes that of the Crucified One while its shell recalls the wood of the cross. On the left, the cherries are the emblematic fruits of the Earthly Paradise, while the pear refers to the Virgin Mary. Finally, on the right are the earthly pleasures to which the melon is linked. But to this spiritual dimension is added the notion of vanity conveyed here by the presence of insects. If the butterfly that gravitates around the nuts evokes the fragility of life, the fly placed on the peach, in the middle of the basket, adds the idea of the corruption of matter... Thus the cycle of the seasons and its procession of fruits evoke the ephemerality of life, the ineluctability of death, but also the prospect of resurrection. Of the fruit basket considered as a memento mori. Balthasar Van der Ast (1593-1657) was a Dutch still-life painter. He trained with his brother-in-law, the painter Ambrosius Bosschaert (1573-1621), and settled in Utrecht and then in Delft, where he specialized in the still life genre. He sometimes liked to combine exotic shells or Chinese porcelain, evidence of Holland's economic power and its maritime domination. His compositions set on an entablature with a neutral background renew the genre. His rare paintings are preserved in the Louvre, Corbeille de fleurs, and the Rijkmuseum. The still life was a very popular genre in the 17th century, particularly in the Protestant Netherlands, which favoured these subjects for their hidden religious or moral symbolism when they turned to the vanities. BALTHASAR VAN DER AST (Middelburg circa 1593–1657 Delft) Still life with tulips, roses and carnations in a Wan-Li porcelain vase with butterflies and insects. Oil on panel. Signed lower left: B. van der. ast. fecit. 30.9 × 26.1 cm. Provenance: - Collection of Bus de Gisignies. - Auction of the estate of Bus de Gisignies, Palais des Beaux-Arts, Brussels, 17.11.1947, Lot 15. - Collection of Fernand Stuyck. - Auction of the estate of Fernand Stuyck, Palais des Beaux-Arts, Brussels, 7.12.1960, Lot 122. - European private collection. The painting offered here is a very fine example of Balthasar van der Ast’s early work and shows the elegance of composition and colouring so typical of the artist. Van der Ast is considered to be one of the most important still life painters of 17th-century Dutch painting. His contribution to this genre consists of approximately 200 paintings in various formats, characterised by refinement and delicacy. Dr Fred G. Meijer, who confirms the authorship of our painting on the basis of a photograph, dates the work, in view of its stylistic features, to circa 1622–24. Balthasar van der Ast settled in Utrecht in 1619, a city which from 1620 onwards was regarded as a new centre of still-life painting. How inspiring this period must have been for van der Ast is shown by the relatively large number of works he produced in the first half of the 1620s. The bouquet of flowers offered here belongs to a group of about 15 small-format floral still lifes in Wan-li vases. Comparable examples are a flower still life in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, dated 1623 (inv. no. A530, oil on panel, 30 × 24 cm; see Fred G. Meijer: The Collection of Dutch and Flemish Still Life Paintings bequeathed by Daisy Linda Ward, Oxford 2003, pp. 157-8, no. 7), a flower piece in a Wan-li vase in the Mauritshuis, The Hague, dated circa 1624 (inv. no. 1073, oil on panel, 42.5 × 32.5 cm) and a floral still life in the P. & N. de Boer Foundation, Amsterdam, dated 1622 (oil on panel, 28.5 × 20.5 cm; see Laurens J. Bol: The Bosschaert dynasty: painters of flowers and fruit, Leigh-on-Sea 1960, p. 69, no. 2). In this group of works, the influence of Ambrosius Bosschaert the Elder (1573–1621) is evident, by whom a large number of floral bouquets in Wan-li vases are known, for example the still life in the Rijksmuseum dated 1619 (inv. no. A 1522, oil on copper, 31 × 22, 5 cm; see P. J. J. Van Thiel (et al.): All the Paintings of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, 1976, p. 136, with illustration). Van der Ast knew how to create a particular atmosphere with his bouquets. They are airy and animated, the colouring subdued and delicate. While Bosschaert was still concerned with the exact reproduction of nature, van der Ast endeavoured to lend his compositions a feeling of elegance and intimacy, as the still life offered here exemplifies. A 1522, Öl auf Kupfer, 31 × 22, 5 cm; siehe P. J. J. Van Thiel (u. a.): All the Paintings of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, 1976, S. 136, mit Abb.).

A 1522, Öl auf Kupfer, 31 × 22, 5 cm; siehe P. J. J. Van Thiel (u. a.): All the Paintings of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, 1976, S. 136, mit Abb.).

1. L. J. Bol, 'The Bosschaert dynasty', Londres, 1980, p. 39. Estimation 80 000 - 120 000 €

BALTHASAR VAN DER AST (Middelburg circa 1593–1657 Delft) Still life with fruits in a woven basket, blue and white porcelain plate, vines, various snails, butterflies and insects. Oil on panel. Barely legibly signed lower right: B(...)Ast. 29.7 × 52.3 cm. Provenance: - Collection of Fritz Frey, Bürgenstock. - Via inheritance, Swiss private collection. Literature: Fritz Frey: Der Bürgenstock: Kunst - Geschichte - Tradition - Hoteldorf, Zurich 1967, pp. 66–67. Our thanks to Dr. Fred G. Meijer who has confirmed the authenticity of this work having examined it in the original. --------------- BALTHASAR VAN DER AST (Middelburg um 1593–1657 Delft) Stillleben mit Früchten in einem Flechtkorb, Blau-weisser Porzellanteller, Weinlaub, diverse Schnecken, Schmetterlinge und Insekten. Öl auf Holz. Unten rechts schwer leserlich signiert: B(...)Ast. 29,7 × 52,3 cm.

Estimation 200 000 - 300 000 €
