Robert Sargent Austin RA (British, 1895-1973) A group of five nude life studies four in pencil, one in black chalk, three individually dated '21 Oct ’52', '13 Jan ’53' and '…16 ’53' (62 x 49cm and similar; unframed) (5) Provenance: Sotheby’s Olympia, London, 19 May 2004, lot 37. Footnote: Artist, illustrator and engraver, Austin was one of Britain's leading printmakers of the middle years of the 20th century. After studying at the Royal College of Art, his training was interrupted by his service in the First World War. He returned to the College in 1919, following the Armistice, when he was taught by the printmaker Sir Frank Short (1857-1945), and in the following two decades made many etchings that are notable for their detailed, Pre-Raphaelite style. As a war artist during the Second World War, he recorded the work of women employed in the WRAF. In 1946, he returned to the Royal College, as a teacher, the period in which these five drawings were made in the College’s life classes. He was a member of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers, and its president from 1962 to 1970. He was elected Associate of the Royal Academy in 1939, and a full member twenty years later, as an engraver. Condition Report: Faint dirty marks and smudges with a little discolouration to edges. The black chalk drawing has some patches of pale yellow discolouration.

There he studied engraving under Sir Frank Short, and was awarded the Rome Scholarship to study engraving in Italy in 1922. While there, he met and married writer Ada May Harrison. The couple returned to England in 1926 and Austin began teaching at the Royal College. During World War II Austin enlisted as a war artist, recording the efforts of women in the Royal Air Force and nursing services. Upon his return, he taught at the Royal College of Art, and worked as an advisor on the design of banknotes to the Bank of England. In 1927 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers, he was elected a full member of the Royal Watercolour Society in 1934, and later also served as president, from 1957 to 1973. He was elelcted an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1939 and to the full membership in 1949.

A Roman Madonna, 1922, etching, a very good, clear impression of the second (final) state, printing with plate tone on fine pale cream laid paper, with an indistinct Letters watermark, published in an edition of 30 impressions, signed and dated in pencil below the platemark, titled in pencil in the lower left sheet corner,with margins, pale mount-staining, plate size 176 x 150 mm (7 x 5.9 ins), sheet size 271 x 211 mm (10 5/8 x 8 3/8 ins), framed and glazed (35 x 33 cm), with William Weston gallery label to verso, dated 1975, and manuscript note stating that the work was remounted on acid free card in 1990 QTY: (1) NOTE: Provenance: William Weston Gallery, London, purchased 2 June 1975 (gallery label verso). Dodgson 36, ii/ii. A Roman Madonna, dating from the period of his engraving scholarship at the British School in Rome, was considered by contemporary critics as the peak of Austin's art as an etcher before he turned to engraving as his principal medium.
