15227)1. GRANIDA UND DAIFILO Öl auf Leinwand. Auf Platte aufgezogen. 99 x 89 cm. In ornamental verziertem Rahmen. (1430071) (13)

Jacob Adriaensz. de Backer (1608-1651) , Attributed Little boy blowing soap bubbles

    Est: €3,000 - €5,000

A little boy is concentrating on blowing a soap bubble. He is using a shallow bowl on a stick or handle for the soap suds. He is depicted against a neutral background, facing left and with his head bowed. The light falls on his rosy cheeks, the tip of his nose and his left hand. He is wearing a rust-brown doublet over a white shirt and a red barrette sits on his head, casting a shadow on his face. The innocent child's play was usually understood as a reference to the transience of human life, which ends as quickly as a soap bubble bursts (Homo bulla). The little boy has no idea of this truth as he plays. Oil on wood, 38 × 29.2 cm

Part. vertical cracks, old rest. and overpainting, in need of restoration. Frame. The composition belongs to the cycle of five paintings with allegorical scenes from the life of Jesus, which Julius Müller Hofstede had already surmised in 1973 (Justus Müller Hofstede, Jacques de Backer. Ein Vertreter der Florentinish-Römischen Maniera in Antwerpen, in: Wallraf-Richartz-Jahrbuch, 35, 1973, p. 254, note 1). On 14 November 2015, Lempertz auctioned the counterparts of the Nativity and the Carrying of the Cross in Cologne under lot 1427. On 17 June 2023, the Crucifixion came up for auction in Frankfurt. Apart from the paintings from the cycle mentioned here and the newly discovered composition offered here, no other paintings have probably survived. Provenance: Westphalian private collection. DER ZINSGROSCHEN Öl auf Leinwand. 141 x 159 cm. A.R. The painting's subject illustrates the well-known passage from the Bible according to Matthew (22:21). During the time of the tax collection by the Romans, which was financially hard for the people, representatives of the Jewish authorities came to Jesus and showed him a coin and asked him whether the tax money had to be paid to Rome. Jesus replied, pointing to the image of Caesar on the coin: “So give back to Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God what is God's”. A few versions of Backer's painting are known and are listed in the catalogue raisonné (see literature). One of these versions is held at the National Museum in Stockholm (inv. no. 382), another in a private collection, and a copy with unknown whereabouts (this one?). Backer and his family arrived in Amsterdam when he was a child, aged ca. 20 he went to study and work with Jacobsz Lampert (1598-1636) in Leeuwarden. He adopted the genres of history and religious paintings from his teacher. Jacob Adriaensz Backer was active as a portrait and history painter in Amsterdam at the same time as Rembrandt and independently developed his own style with which he made a name for himself. Peter van den Brink, who organized an exhibition on him in 2008-2009, sees him as a counterpoint to Rembrandt. Backer has modeled himself in the violin player. Seen from the side over his shoulder, the fiddler looks at the viewer with rapt eyes and an open mouth. The coat and shirt threaten to slip off the shoulder. The partly light brown, curly hair is rendered loose and fluffy. Light shiny spots in the eyes, on the nose and on a tooth give the face additional liveliness. Another, somewhat weaker version of the violinist, which Peter van den Brink says may be a workshop piece, is in the Szépművészeti Múzeum in Budapest (wood, 73 × 62 cm, inv. no. 68.11; Peter van den Brink, in: Peter van den Brink et al, Jacob Backer (1608/09–1651), Museum Het Rembrandthuis, Amsterdam & Suermondt-Ludwig-Museum, Aachen, Zwolle, 2009, p. 216, cat.-no. A31). A smaller copy was auctioned in Paris (Hotel Drouot, June 9, 2012, lot 182, wood, 68 × 57 cm). The image comes from a sequence of the five senses and symbolizes hearing. The Utrecht Caravaggists brought the depiction of the senses as half-length figures from Italy to Holland, where the theme was taken up by the Haarlem painters, among others. The subject had been known in printmaking in the Netherlands since the 16th century. Two other paintings from this series by Jacob Backer are known, they are The Drinker (Allegory of Taste) and Old Man with a Mirror Shard (Allegory of the Face), both in the State Museums in Berlin, Picture Gallery (inv. no. 935A and 935B). Opinion by Peter van den Brink, January 21, 2014.

BILDNIS EINES VIOLINENSPIELERS (ALLEGORIE DES GEHÖRS) Öl auf Holz. Parkettiert. 70 x 59,5 cm. In breitem Holzrahmen. Jahrhundert besonders beliebt waren. Qualitätvolle Malerei in überwiegend monochromer beige-brauner Farbigkeit. Rest., Retuschen. Provenienz: Versteigerung Köln, Van Ham, 15. November 2013, Lot 454. The flesh tones of the violinist are particularly emphasized through lighter colouration. Restored, with retouching. Provenance: Auction Cologne, Van Ham, 15 November 2013, lot 454.

GemäldepaarPORTRAIT EINeS MANNES UND SEINER EHEFRAU Öl auf Leinwand. Je 85 x 70 cm. In schwarzem Rahmen.
