  • Graham Badari, Oenpelli, Western Arnhem Land, NT (b. 1963), Djitnuk (Fishing spirit), Ochre on Paper
    Aug. 23, 2026

Graham Badari, Oenpelli, Western Arnhem Land, NT (b. 1963), Djitnuk (Fishing spirit), Ochre on Paper

    Est: $400 - $600

Graham Badari Oenpelli, Western Arnhem Land, NT (b. 1963) Djitnuk (Fishing spirit) Ochre on Paper Community: Injalak Arts, Gunbalanya (Oenpelli), Western Arnhem Land, Northern Territory. Country: Maburrinj, Gunbalanya (Oenpelli). Skin Name: Wardjak. Language: Kunwinjku Markings: CAT 4556-08 Story: The painting depicts Djitnuk, a freshwater fishing spirit of Arnhem Land. Djitnuk inhabits the paperbark trees surrounding the freshwater billabongs and rivers of Western Arnhem Land. At night, he announces his presence by making a distinctive sound that alerts Bininj (Aboriginal people) that he is nearby. The barbs on his elbows assist him in hunting djen (fish) and kuluban (fruit bats). In the painting, Djitnuk is shown holding a raised spear while surrounded by a variety of fish, including Namarnkol (barramundi), Namarddarkka (catfish), Durnbuhmanj (bream) and Karlerrh (longtom). Beside him sits his wife, with a djerrk (dilly bag) used for carrying hunting implements and the day's catch. According to Kunwinjku tradition, Djitnuk becomes mischievous during the full moon and may attempt to frighten people fishing at his waterhole, believing they are stealing his fish. For this reason, many Bininj traditionally avoid fishing during a full moon.

  • Graham Badari, Wardjak (b. 1963), Namorrodoh & Cripple Man, Ochre on Arches Paper
    Aug. 23, 2026

Graham Badari, Wardjak (b. 1963), Namorrodoh & Cripple Man, Ochre on Arches Paper

    Est: $400 - $600

Graham Badari Wardjak (b. 1963) Namorrodoh & Cripple Man Ochre on Arches Paper Language: Kunwinjku Story: The painting illustrates a Djang (Dreaming) story from the Coopers Creek area near Mount Borrodaile. A crippled man, blind and covered in sores, lived alone after being rejected and abandoned by his community and although a woman had been promised to him as his wife, she refused to care for him and instead remained with her lover. Despite his pleas for food and water, the community abandoned him, leaving him to die alone. Namorrodoh, a powerful malevolent spirit being and magic man, took pity on the man and brought him food, water, fish, yams and native bee honey (sugarbag). Namorrodoh led him to a sacred waterhole, where bathing in the water transformed him into a healthy young man, curing his blindness and sores. Namorrodoh then armed him with spears, an axe and a club. The restored man pursued those who had abandoned him, killing them all, including his promised wife and her lover, after taking his revenge, he went to live with Namorrodoh. The story is a powerful moral narrative about compassion, neglect, justice and the supernatural power of ancestral beings within Kunwinjku tradition.

  • Graham Badari, Maburrinj (b. 1963), Namorrodoh's Fish, Ochre on Bark
    Aug. 23, 2026

Graham Badari, Maburrinj (b. 1963), Namorrodoh's Fish, Ochre on Bark

    Est: $800 - $1,200

Graham Badari Maburrinj (b. 1963) Namorrodoh's Fish Ochre on Bark Community: Wardjak Language: Kunwinjku, Mayali Markings: 820-09, INJ1324 Story: In the dreamtime, Namorrodoh was a giant spirit man who had lived in the stone country of Mankolod for a long time. People were scared of his fierce ugly face and his power. His eyes put a spell on people, then he would kill them and eat them. In this way he took their spiritis to increase his own strength and power. Like the owl, he slept during the day, travelling and hunting at night. He had a Miyarrurr, or club, to kill people. In this painting a daluk (young woman) came to fish for namarnkol (barramundi) at a billabong near the cave where her family were living. She caught a large namarnkol which was eaten by her family - the bones of the fish are shown here, left over after the feast. However, the Daluk did not know that the billabong and all its fish were protected by Namorrodoh and could not be eaten. He arrived soon after the family had eaten and followed them into their cave. In his anger, he sealed the cave entrance with rocks and let the family die.
