Joseph Bail offers us an intimate scene totally characteristic of his artistic imaginary. The protagonist is a young woman seated in profile in a sober interior, dressed in a striking red dress; her posture is calm and collected, with her gaze lost, suggesting introspection, while at her side, on a stool, a small cat reinforces the sensation of daily life and discreet companionship; the soft light delicately models the face, hands and fabrics, highlighting the textures and creating a warm and restrained atmosphere, typical of Bail, where no dramatic action takes place, but a deep sense of intimacy, calm and attentive observation of the simple is conveyed. Joseph Bail was a French realist painter known for his detailed scenes of everyday life, especially domestic interiors and kitchens, where he represented objects such as utensils, food and fabrics with great precision, standing out for his careful use of natural light and the creation of warm and intimate environments; trained in the academic tradition, his work is part of the naturalism of the late nineteenth century and, although he did not achieve the fame of other artists of his time, today he is appreciated by collectors for his technical quality and the charm of his compositions.

Joseph Bail (1862 - 1921) "Maid And Child Lunching" Oil on Canvas. Depicting a woman and young child sitting at a table enjoying a meal. Light comes through from the outdoor window on the left side of the room, along with a door opening into another room. There is a very clear reflection on a copper bowl sitting on the ground. Joseph Bail was born on January 22, 1862 in Limonest in the Rhone region of France. His father, Jean-Antoine Bail, was a genre painter influenced by the Dutch masters, and he focused his attention on depicting scenes from domestic life. Bail received his early training from his father and later studied in the studios of Jean Léon Gerome and Carolus-Durand, two of the leading figures of the Parisian Academy of Fine Arts. Bail became best known for interior domestic scenes, often depicting daily household life. He met success with his comical paintings of maids and cooks and other scenes depicting everyday ordinary life. Bail's paintings in this genre established him in the modern tradition of Realism. Joseph Bail presents a body of artwork that is inspired by the traditions of the old masters but also finds a kinship with contemporary Realism. Bail regularly submitted to the Salons and toward the end of his career was hors concours, or exempt from having to submit his works for jury approval. He received awards in 1885 (Honorable Mention), 1886 (third-class medal), 1887 (second-class medal), 1889 Exposition Universelle (silver medal), 1900 Exposition Universelle (gold medal), and 1902 (medal of honor). He was also named Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur in 1900, and was a member of the Société des Artistes Français. Joseph Bail kam aus einer Malerfamilie, Sein Vater Jean-Antoine Bail war Genre-Maler und von der niederländische Schule stark beeinflusst, wie sein Vater, Joseph Bail spezialisierte sich in Stillleben, häufiges Motiv ist ein Kücheninterieur. „La Ménagère“ ist eines seiner wichtigsten Gemälde. Seine Kunst erkennt man von der glänzenden Farbpalette und von der meisterlichen Ausführung von dem Lichtreflex auf Oberflächen wie Metall und Glas. LA MÉNAGERIE Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 81 x 65,5 cm. Rechts unten signiert „Bail Joseph“. In original vergoldetem Prunkrahmen. Im Mittelpunkt dieses Kücheninterieurs eine junge sitzende Frau mit roter Weste und weißem Rock, die in ihrem Schoß eine große bauchige, halb mit Wasser gefüllte Glasflasche hält. Aus dieser heraus befüllt sie ein am Boden stehendes großes Gurkenglas mit Wasser. Neben Ihr ein hölzerner Schemel, auf dem zwei weitere Glasflaschen stehen. Am Boden mittig ein langer Kupferlöffel und links ein glänzender Kupferkessel mit Deckel, in dem sich sowohl die rote Bluse des Gewandes als auch der Boden widerspiegelt. Strahlende Farben und die gelungenen Reflexionen des Lichtes auf den Glasgefäßen und auf dem glänzenden Kupferkessel kennzeichnen dieses qualitätvolle Bild. Für seine Lichtspiegelung auf Gegenständen wurde Bail von seinen Zeitgenossen gepriesen. Diese kommen in dem vorliegenden Gemälde hervorragend zum Ausdruck. Verso diverse Aufkleber. Retuschen.
