He painted a number of pictures dedicated to Polish history, icons for churches, urban landscapes and portraits of the Polish nobility. In 1863 he moved to Paris, where his miniatures, mostly of figures in sixteenth and seventeenth century costumes, became a success, especially the scenes from the life of French court during the reign of King of FRANCE and Poland Henry II of Valois and the history of FRANCE. His works were exhibited in Paris salons (1865 - 1883), Warsaw, Brussels, Berlin, London and Vienna. Ladislaus Bakalowicz (1833-1904) The Secret signed lower right 'Bakalowicz Paris' oil on panel 51 x 39cm The painting is executed in oil on a wooden panel support, formed from a single panel with a thin addition at the left hand side. There is movement and loss in the paint layer following the lines of the addition. Overall, the paint layers are in a good, stable condition. There is some slight wrinkling in the paint layer of the white dress, which would have occurred soon after the painting was completed and is a drying defect of the oil paint. Areas of overpaint are well matched to the original and are mainly located in small areas of the background with one larger area at the bottom of the darker dress. The varnish is clear, even and semi-matte with a few scuffs to the surface.

Ladislaw BAKALOWICZ (1831 -1904). Importante œuvre historiciste illustrant Christophe Colomb présentant des sauvages amérindiens à la cour de Ferdinand d'Aragon et d'Isabelle de Castille.. Ladislaus ou Wladyslaw Bakalowicz, peintre d'origine polonaise né à Cracovie, travailla à Paris après ses études au sein de l'école d'art de Varsovie. Il exposa à Paris, Londres, Vienne et New-York. Si les portraits féminins font partie de ses sujets de prédilection, il excella dans la peinture historique en peignant des scènes importantes de la Renaissance et du règne de Louis XIII tels que "Louis XIII recevant l'ambassadeur d'Italie", vente Londres du 19 janvier 1973 ou "La collation d'Henry IV", vente Paris le 11 janvier 1943. L'œuvre ici présentée est relative à un des évènements culturels les plus importants de la Renaissance : la découverte du nouveau monde. On y ressent toute la solennité du moment dans le riche salon où sont assis sur l'estrade le couple souverain et le jeune Prince. Sur le pan de mur richement garni de tapisseries et entrecoupé d'une cheminée encore dans le style gothique flamboyant se tiennent, attentifs, les Grands d'Espagne. Bel encadrement en stuk doré d'origine. Dimensions : 92 x 64 cm. Dimensions cadre inclus : 130 x 105 cm. Ladislaw BAKALOWICZ (1831 -1904). Important historicist work illustrating Christopher Columbus presenting Native American savages at the court of Ferdinand of Aragon and Isabella of Castile. Ladislaus or Wladyslaw Bakalowicz, painter of Polish origin born in Krakow, worked in Paris after his studies within the art school in Warsaw. He exhibited in Paris, London, Vienna and New York. If female portraits are among his favorite subjects, he excelled in historical painting by painting important scenes from the Renaissance and the reign of Louis XIII such as "Louis XIII receiving the Italian Ambassador", London sale of 19 January 1973 or "La collation d'Henry IV", Paris sale on January 11, 1943. The work presented here relates to one of the most important cultural events of the Renaissance: the discovery of the new world. You can feel all the solemnity of the moment in the rich salon where the sovereign couple and the young Prince are seated on the platform. On the wall richly lined with tapestries and interspersed with a fireplace still in the flamboyant Gothic style stand, attentive, the Great of Spain. Beautiful original gilded stuk frame.
