Cartoonist (1915-1975) who became prominent during World War II as the creator of the popular comic strip, The Sad Sack. An original unsigned ink and felt tip nude sketch of Baker's longtime companion Suzanne La France on an 8.5 x 15 piece of cardstock; and a one-page ALS, signed "G. B.," 8.5 x 11, no date, to La France. Baker writes, in part: "Played tennis with Sam Goldwyn in the afternoon...You mentioned that apartments are hard to find in Paris. Do you have any more information on that? Working in an hotel would be almost impossible what with drawing boards, lights, book, papers and other items." Along the bottom and left edge, Baker has added an original ink and felt tip sketch of a shirtless tennis player with abnormally large feet. In fine condition, with a couple light brushes to text of letter. An unusual and very racy drawing.

              Est: $300 - $400

GEORGE BAKER (1915-1975) American cartoonist, creator of the popular strip among American G.I.s, Sad Sack. A fine and large original drawing of his longtime companion, Suzanne La France, a nude accomplished in ink and colored marker on a 8 1/2 " x 15" piece of cardstock. A very unusual example of Baker's work. Accompanied by an A.L.S. "B.B." 1p. 4to., [Los Angeles, n.d., c. 1970?] to La France that reads in part: "...Played tennis with Sam Goldwyn in the afternoon. It was warm and sunny - no smog....You mentioned that Apartments are hard to find in Paris. Do you have any more information on that? Working in an hotel would almost be impossible what with drawing boards, lights, books papers and other items. Maybe a small house outside Paris would be best - although I should be in Paris for a while to pick up ideas...". We are unsure of the origin of the initials "B.B.", but we presume this was a pet name of some sort. Together two pieces in fine condition.

Cartoonist (1915-1975) who became prominent during World War II as the creator of the popular comic strip, The Sad Sack. ALS signed "B. B.," one page, 8.5 x 11, no date. In part: "I can't understand why you haven't gotten my letters. Been writing almost every day since you arrived in Paris. Maybe I haven't put enough stamps on since I just found out today that it's 15 cents a 1/2 ounce. I thought it was an ounce! However none of the letters were returned so I don't know what to think! I hope by now things are more cheerful for you. And most important your journeys around Paris. I hope the toe has cured. Things about the same. The Book is progressing well, I think-although I have found nothing is certain. About another 10 days before I submit it again. Be good. Try and have a little fun. I think of you very much." He has added the postscript, "I hope they didn't send those letters by boat!" Baker has also drawn an elaborate sketch at the bottom of the page of a woman and her dog looking at advertisements of coming attractions...among them "George Baker" and "Sad Sack." In fine condition, with some mirroring of the sketch. Accompanied by an unsigned self portrait sketch of Baker on a 7 x 10.5 page removed from a spiral notepad.

Cartoonist (1915-1975) who became prominent during World War II as the creator of the popular comic strip, The Sad Sack. ALS signed "B. B.," one notebook page, lightly-lined, 8.5 x 11, no date (but circa 1958-59 given its 'Anatomy of a Murder' reference). Baker writes his long-time companion, Suzanne LaFrance. In part: "The blue mood is all gone. Had another relaxing day paying tennis with Goldwyn and Carlos. I had just been cooped up too long and now things look much brighter. I'm sending the Sad Sack books to Alfred and suggesting that he use them for the comic books. The material in the books approximate few years of comic strips so its as if I had continued the strip few more years...I'm having dinner at Dave Golding's tonight. He has a new job with Otto Preminger that will take Dave back east. He leaves this week for Michigan for the 'Anatomy of Murder' set." He has added a colorful and comical sketch around three sides of the page. In fine condition with a few creases and wrinkles touching a few words and parts of the drawing, areas of toning, and faint mirroring of ink. Fantastic content, whimsically illustrated!
