Watercolour and pencil Signed, inscribed and dated 25/05/03, lower left Image: 61 x 47cm (24 x 18 1/2in.) Provenance: The Artist s Estate Julius Stafford-Baker was a self-taught artist. However, as a young man his obsession was with the RAF, which had started when he was a messenger boy for the Royal Flying Corps in 1918. He joined the RAF Volunteer Reserve, and became a regular at the outbreak of World War II. After serving with a radar unit during the Battle of Britain, he became an intelligence officer, and his artistic skills and his aeronautical knowledge made him a useful commodity, but he was never made an official war artist, primarily because the role was forbidden to those in the field of intelligence. In 1943 he was sent as courier on a flight behind enemy lines to Yugoslavia to deliver the letter from Churchill promising support to General Tito, and later he attended the War Crimes Trials both at Nuremberg and in Japan. He was conducting officer to the British Parliamentary Delegation at Belsen, and was sent to record the devastation at Hiroshima. He found these last two experiences so terrible that on his return to civilian life he spent eighteen months painting in the Shetlands to recover. He exhibited widely before the war, but afterwards limited himself to showing at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. The War Artists Advisory Committee bought a large quantity of his work, and in 1956 he won a Giles Bequest Prize at the V & A for printmaking. Otherwise he was content to sell casually from his studio and his work is now held in the collections of the British Museum, the Imperial War Museum, the V & A, and many other institutions in Britain and overseas.
