Maringka Baker is a senior Pitjantjatjara artist who lives in the small community of Kanpi, in the north-west corner of South Australia. Due to the remoteness of this small community, senior members continue to observe traditional practices and ceremonial rituals, which enrich and reinforce the importance of country and its Dreaming mythology. Maringka Baker is custodian of many important stories, including Anmangunga, her mother’s country (a camping site near Watarru, where she played as a small child); Kaliumpil (the place of her birth); Kuru Ala (a sacred place for the Seven Sisters Creation Story) and Kungkarrakalpa (the Seven Sisters Creation Story). Maringka Baker’s paintings are rich in cultural significance being grounded in country and ceremony and blending landscape with a fusion of passion, individual expression, and cultural integrity.

She was teaching her all about the country they travelled through. Sometimes when they stopped they performed Inma (sacred singing and dancing). Elle est née vers 1952, dans le bush. Après la mort de ses parents elle est élevée par d’autres membres de sa famille (dont Anmanari Brown) et ira à l’école à Warburton mais s’enfuit pour rejoindre des parents à Ernabella. Plus tard, elle s'installe à Kaltjiti, où elle termine ses études et obtient un emploi à l’école. Elle va travailler un moment à la clinique de la communauté d’Irrunytju après l’obtention d’un diplôme. Elle s’installe ensuite avec son mari à Kanpi. Maringka possède un profond attachement à son pays et à ses connections spirituelles. Elle transmet ses connaissances à travers ses toiles. Elle se lance dans la peinture en 2004. Elle s’inspire de son Rêve de Dingo et raconte la création de collines par les Ancêtres Dingos. Parfois aussi elle décrit son Rêve des 7 sœurs (Kungkarrakalpa en Pitjantjatjara). L’autre thème de prédilection de cette artiste relate l’histoire de deux Sœurs (Minyma Kutjara Tjukurrpa) qui retournent chez elles. L’une d’entre elle va fabriquer des bâtons à fouir. La terre qui a vu ces événements est Wingelina. C’est surtout la façon très particulière de détailler le désert, de montrer les plantes en pleine floraison à l’aide de couleurs vives, qui ont fait son succès. Les toiles sont parfois dominées par les verts, souvent crus, qui tranchent avec la production des autres artistes aborigènes ; mais Maringka aime tout autant le rouge. Chez elle, rarement de lignes tracées à la brosses, mais juste des points, déposés en lignes qui forment des diagrammes, qui découpent la toile en grandes ou petites surfaces géométriques, des carrés ou des rectangles. Seuls quelques motifs, des petits cercles concentriques et les formes en fer à cheval (qui symbolisent les femmes ou les hommes autant que les Ancêtres) se dégagent. Les lignes sont rarement très droites et leurs mouvements légers renforcent encore l’effet pulsatile de ses compositions. Ses dernières années les artistes originaires de cette région connaissent un succès importants et Maringka fait partie des artistes dont la réputation grandit très vite. This is a sacred womens place. Wati Nyirru wantinyi (they didnt want that man Nyirru). Influenced by custodian tales and the seasons, Maringka Baker is celebrated for her meticulous aerial landscapes that juxtapose symmetry against asymmetry. There is a feeling of familiarity that can only stem from someone who knows these lands intimately, as displayed in Bakers vivid depiction of Ngura Mankurpa, 2006 which narrates three ancestral stories and locates the painting in her homelands. Like many of her compositions, this illustration is inspired by the seasons and the landscape that is rejuvenated after the rainfalls. Washing away the dust, green grass replaces the dry soil and the rockholes that are positioned over the canvas in a geometric fashion, brim with water. Renowned for her dexterity with colours, Baker explores the palette of her land. While some envisage a desolate and dusty desert, Baker delights in illustrating rather, a lush environment that changes with the seasons the incomparable landscape of the Australian desert and the transformation created by rain. A senior Pitjantjatjara artist, Baker was born at the important ceremonial site Kaliumpil in Western Australia, and now resides in Kanpi, a small community situated in the northwest corner of South Australia. She is the custodian of several important Dreamings, demonstrating her knowledge through the application of rich colour and detailed brushwork. As one of Tjungu Palyas most prolific and sought-after artists, Bakers work featured in the inaugural Australian Indigenous Art Triennial: Culture Warriors in 2007, held at the National Gallery of Australia, and has been exhibited internationally to much acclaim. The two wanampi, father and his son travel from rockhole to rockhole around Wingellina. Kapi Piti (rockholes). The two men travelled from Pukara to Kuru Ala and Nyumu. Tali, punu munu tjampi (sand hills, trees and grasses). After rains the desert goes from red to really green. There is grass everywhere, Wati Kutjara pulkana nyananyi (the two men are happy in their country).' 'This is a dangerous place, Pukara. There is a wanampi here (water snake). Wanampi kutjara (two water snakes), father and son. The two snake men saw that the Anangu women were collecting bush foods. The son snuck back to where the food was at night and stole all the food the women had collected. They saw him and speared him in the side. Tjukurpa mulapa. This is a true story. The two snakes still live at this place. The two wanampi, father and son travel from rockhole to rockhole in country around Wingellina. Kapi piti (rockholes). The two men travelled from Pukara to Kuru Ala and Nyumu. This is red sand dune country with rockholes and small rocky outcrops.'1 Influenced by custodian tales and the seasons, Maringka Baker is celebrated for her meticulous aerial landscapes that juxtapose symmetry against asymmetry. There is a feeling of familiarity that can only stem from someone who knows these lands unequivocally, as displayed in Baker's vivid depiction of Pukara which narrates the Dreaming story of two water snakes who love their land but cause mischief amongst the community, particularly with the women. Like many of her compositions, this illustration is inspired by the seasons and the landscape that is rejuvenated after the rainfalls. Washing away the dust, green grass replaces the dry soil and the rockholes that are positioned over the canvas in a geometric fashion, brim with water. Renowned for her dexterity with colours, Baker explores the palette of her land. What some envisage as a desolate and dusty desert, Baker delights in illustrating a lush environment that changes with the seasons, observing the incomparable landscape of the Australian desert and the transformation brought on by rain. Baker is a senior Pitjantjatjara artist, born at the important ceremonial site Kaliumpil in Western Australia, and now resides in Kanpi, a small community situated in the north west corner of South Australia. She is the custodian of several important Dreamings, demonstrating her knowledge through the application of rich colour and detailed brushwork. As one of Tjungu Palya's most prolific artists, Baker's work featured in the Australian Indigenous Art Triennial: Culture Warriors in 2007, held at the National Gallery of Australia and has been exhibited internationally, to much acclaim. The mosaic-like dots and parallel lines have become typical of Baker's sought after repertoire as each work is a journey into her land that is so evidently respected and revered. 1.
