He was born in Buffalo to Polish émigré parents. From 1912, he attended night classes at the Albright Art School, graduating in 1917. Bakos traveled with fellow artists from Buffalo to Colorado in August 1918, and worked at the University of Colorado, Boulder and University of Denver. In 1920, Bakos moved to Santa Fe and became a founding member of Los Cinco Pintores, the first modernist painting group in Santa Fe. The goal, according to art historian Stanley L. Cuba, was "to bring art to the people, including prison inmates and factory workers." Los Cinco Pintores built adobe houses next to one another on the Camino del Monte Sol, the town's first mini-art colony." In 1923, Bakos also became a founding member of the group The New Mexico Painters. Collections: Pennsylvania Academy; Whitney Museum of American Art; Brooklyn Museum; Delaware Art Museum; New Mexico Museum of Art, Santa Fe; Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco, de Young Museum; Carnegie Institute, and Albright Art Gallery. In 1985, the Burchfield Penney Art Center at Buffalo State University presented a solo exhibition of his art.

Jozef Bakos (1891 - 1977) "Spring Nambe" Watercolor on Paper. Signed on lower right, titled on reverse. A significant contributor to modernism in the American Southwest, Josef Bakos was a member of "Los Cinco Pintores," Spanish for Five Painters, the first artist group in New Mexico devoted to modernism and bringing art to the people of New Mexico. Bakos was the son of Polish immigrants and grew up in Buffalo, New York. He studied at the Art School at the Albright Art Gallery with John Thompson, who introduced him to Cezanne whom he emulated including becoming a plein-air painter. In 1918, Bakos followed Thompson to Denver, Colorado and worked as an art teacher in Boulder. In 1920, Bakos settled in Santa Fe, where he first earned money by carving furniture for La Fonda Hotel and in 1921 founded "Los Cinco Pintores" with Walter Mruk, Willard Nash, Will Shuster, and Fremont Ellis. Throughout his career, he achieved national recognition when his works were accepted for important exhibitions, particularly in the 1930's, when the Whitney Museum of American Art purchased on of his paintings. Bakos spent the majority of his career painting in Santa Fe and from 1940 onward he shared his expertise as an art instructor at Santa Fe High School.
