Painter

World-renowned Filipino artist Manuel Baldemor originated from Paete, Laguna. Manuel Baldemor's paintings depict the rich cultural aspects of his home country. His brightly colored paintings, mosaics, and prints show the unique cityscapes, landscapes, and people of the Philippines. His acrylic paintings almost always contain his signature bold lines and vivid pops of color. 

Baldemor is also a writer, sculptor, and illustrator who travels internationally giving exhibitions of his work. In 2015 in Montreal, artist Manuel Baldemor held his 204th solo exhibition. The exhibition, entitled Images of the Homeland, featured many of Manuel Baldemor's cityscapes. He also donates his time doing painting workshops for children around the world, and has illustrated 24 separate UNICEF greeting cards.     White Trunks signed and dated 1976 (lower left) acrylic on canvas 15 1/2” x 21” (39 cm x 53 cm) Manuel Baldemor’s works are perhaps one of the best depictions of Filipino scenes. Born in the artistic town of Paete, Laguna, Baldemor’s works echo the grassroots where he came from and the nostalgia that comes within. In the 1970s, Baldemor began to develop his brand of art, one that heavily relies on his rural memories. This 1976 White Trunks is evidence of that. In vibrant, vivid yellows, Baldemor depicts a two-story house typical of the provinces. The highlight of the piece, however, is an old tree snaking from behind the house. It signifies the permanence of the house — this place has been passed down from generation to generation, and so, it will stand the test of time. (Hannah Valiente)

    Patola signed and dated 1971 (lower left) pen and ink on paper 14” x 11 1/4” (36 cm x 29 cm)   Provenance Hidalgo Gallery Patola, a work created just a year before his career-defining “Paeta I” won the grand prize in the Art Association of the Philippines Art Competition and Exhibition in 1972, portrays Manuel Baldemor’s fascination with the folk. In this detailed pen-and-ink work, Baldemor depicts a homely kitchen just as one is about to prepare their dinner. On the table were a halved squash, a stalk of bok choy, and the titular patola. Baldemor’s deft hands expertly created depth and contours using only pen and ink, a talent that would eventually lead him overseas as he continued to exalt the Filipino tradition through his art.     Dalaga hand-signed and dated 1972 (bottom) serigraph 7/10 16” x 23” (41 cm x 58 cm) Dalaga, created the same year the artist won the grand prize in the Art Association of the Philippines Art Competition and Exhibition, exhibits Manuel Baledmor’s fascination with the provincial. In an approximation of a quaint rural house, Baldemor portrays the titular dalaga as she sits in her room. He bends and twists the house as he shows all its rooms from one view – we can see the dalaga as she peers over the window and directly below her stands the family dog. We could see the kitchen and the storage and even the clothesline from the backyard. Baldemor’s Dalaga brings forth a sense of camaraderie and community onto his canvas, a continued tradition of depicting the Filipino culture through his art. (Hannah Valiente)
