Da Comento di Christophoro Landino fiorentino sopra la Comedia di Danthe, Firenze: Nicolaus Laurentii, Alamanus, 1481. Il Comento di Christophoro Landino ..., impresso a Firenze da Niccolò di Lorenzo della Magna, o Lorenzo Alamanus, terminato il 30 agosto 1481, è un'edizione in folio di 372 carte, illustrata con tavole disegnate da Sandro Botticelli e incise su rame da Baccio Baldini. Le incisioni dovevano accompagnare ciascuno dei 99 canti delle Tre Cantiche, ed essere stampate con il testo. Di queste però, solo 19 in totale furono eseguite. Giorgio Vasari tramanda che Sandro Botticelli "figurò lo Inferno e lo mise in stampa", rendendo nota la collaborazione tra il pittore e l'incisore Baccio Baldini. La maggior parte degli studiosi concorda con Vasari: dunque, a Botticelli spetterebbe ll'invenzione dei disegni, sulla base dei quali Baldini avrebbe poi inciso le lastre in rame. L'attribuzione a Botticelli del disegno delle tavole dell'edizione del 1481 è rafforzata dalla loro vicinanza al ciclo di disegni conservati tra il Kupferstichkabinett di Berlino e la Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana. I due cicli hanno innegabili affinità compositive e iconografiche, sebbene lo stile delle incisioni sia decisamente più arcaicizzante. Verosimilmente Baldini non lavorò sugli abbozzi finali di Botticelli, ma piuttosto su materiale di studio e forse alcuni schizzi in stilo in quanto Botticelli non si sarebbe trovato a Firenze perché impegnato in altre commissioni. L'incisione, eseguita alla maniera fine nella seconda metà del '400, viene attribuita al celebre orafo fiorentino Baccio Baldini. La stampa è in tiratura della fine del XVIII secolo: fu edita a cura di Alessandro da Morrona, che possedeva il rame originale, e inserita nella sua opera Pisa illustrata nelle arti del disegno..Livorno: presso Giovanni Marenigh, 1812. Non si conoscono tirature precedenti alla Pisa illustrata. (1)

The authenticity of this engraving was confirmed verbally by Charles Winling, Cabinet Rothschild, Paris; and Maxime Préaud, Chief Curator of Prints, Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris, in 2008 (the Parisian publisher Amand-Durand made photogravure reproductions of several other engravings in this series, from impressions in the Rothschild collection, but not Hind 24 or 25, see lot 57). We have located only two other impressions of this subject in public collections (Rothschild Collection, Musée du Louvre, Paris; and the British Museum, formerly in the Otto Collection; the latter with an added ornamental border). This is one of 24 Fine-Manner engravings from the so-called Otto Prints series created in Florence during the mid-1400s and now attributed to Baccio Baldini, a goldsmith and engraver likely associated with the workshop of the great Renaissance artist Sandro Botticelli (1445-1510). These passed through the collection of the Leipzig connoisseur Ernst Peter Otto (1724-1799), hence their name. According to Hind, these tondo (or circular designs) were all, "Destined for the same use, that is the decoration of the covers of round or oblong toilet-boxes or work-boxes for ladies." Baldini (circa 1436–1487) was noted in passing by the 16th century artist/art historian Giorgio Vasari, who mentioned him as a Florentine goldsmith lacking disegno or the ability to conceive original designs and therefore relied on the work of Botticelli. Nevertheless, some 100 different engraved subjects have to date been attributed to Baldini. Working during the mid-1400s, he was at the forefront of the innovative engraving technique, transforming the art from the goldsmith's craft with incised designs decorating designs on silver and gold obejects to printing from engraved, inked plates onto sheets of paper as a means of multiplying and further distributing their work, increasing its commercial viability. We have located only two other impressions of this subject in public collections (Rothschild Collection, Musée du Louvre, Paris; and the British Museum, formerly in the Otto Collection. On the latter, the blank shields in the upper part of the composition have been filled in with pen and ink additions; the one on the left with the badge--six palle of the Medici, not used by them until 1465; the one on the right possibly with a heraldic arms belonging to Austria, according to Hind; both with an added ornamental border).         Umkreis. Das Inferno. Kupferstich auf hellblauem Bütten. 22,3 x 28,2 cm. "Questo Elinferno del Chaposan To di Pisa". Um 1490 (?). Hind A.I.20, TIB (Commentary) .028. Wz. Schrift (Undeutlich). Das Blatt zeigt ein Detail des Deckenfreskos "Das jüngste Gericht" auf dem Campo Santo in Pisa, welches ursprünglich Andrea di Cione, genannt Orcagna zugeschrieben wurde. Neuerdings wird die Ausführung des Freskos jedoch dem aus Pisa stammenden und im zweiten Viertel des 14. Jahrhunderts tätigen Francesco Traini zugesprochen. Das Fresko wurde bereits früh beschädigt und einer 1530 erfolgten Restaurierung folgten weitere, so dass der vorliegende Kupferstich gewissermaßen einen besseren Eindruck der originalen Komposition zu vermittelt vermag, als das Original selbst. Der Kupferstecher unseres Blattes, wohl ein florentinischer Künstler, bleibt indes unbekannt, dürfte jedoch aus dem näheren Umfeld von Baccio Baldini stammen. Ganz ausgezeichneter, gegensatzreicher und prägnanter Druck, der durch das farbige Papier belebt wird. Mit schmalem Rändchen um die Plattenkante, rechts bis in den Plattenrand geschnitten. Verso leichte Falzspuren, dort minimal fleckig, sonst in originaler und sehr schöner Erhaltung. Selten.
