Buona impressione nello stato definitivo su carta vergellata sottile priva di filigrana. Scena enigmatica in linea con altri soggetti soprannaturali e di stregoneria presenti in modo prominente nei disegni, nelle stampe e nei dipinti di Baldung: rappresentazioni di donne con connotazioni sinistre o maligne associate con la vulnerabilità e la morte sono caratteristiche della sua opera. Lo stalliere giace a terra con vicini gli strumenti del suo lavoro, il cavallo sul fondo si volge verso l'osservatore con uno sguardo torvo, e una megera a seno nudo si sporge dalla finestra con una torcia a illuminare la scena. La strega sulla destra potrebbe aver ucciso l'uomo, avergli fatto un sortilegio o aver stregato il cavallo inducendolo a uccidere il suo stalliere, ma le chiavi di lettura in termini anche allegorici sono numerose. La stampa è stata anche interpretata come un autoritratto metaforico dell'artista, poiché lo scudo sulla parete reca il suo stemma araldico, l'unicorno, e per una certa rassomiglianza del personaggio con gli autoritratti dell'artista.

Die noch kleinen Randausbrüche und auch vereinzelte Wurmlöcher in der Darstellung sorgsam und unauffällig retuschiert. Abgesehen von zwei minimen und kaum wahrnehmbaren Randeinrisschen links und unten in ganz ausgezeichneter Erhaltung mit schmalem umlaufenden Rand Already a somewhat later impression, but still with quite clear drawing even in the darker areas. The still small edge losses and also occasional wormholes in the image carefully and inconspicuously retouched. Apart from two minimal and hardly noticeable small edge tears on the left and below, in excellent condition with a narrow margin all around Erläuterungen / Comments Anders als Dürer in seinem berühmten Kupferstich (s. Los 3028) zeigt Baldung den Kirchenlehrer hier nicht bei der wissenschaftlichen Arbeit in der Studierstube, sondern in der Wildnis, wohin er sich als Eremit zu Bussübungen zurückgezogen hat. Sein Begleiter ist einzig sein treuer Löwe, der friedlich bei ihm weilt. Der kniende Heilige ist umringt von baumbestandenen Felsen, wobei die Kapelle mit Haus im Hintergrund jedoch darauf verweist, dass die Zivilisation nicht fern ist. In der dynamisch-expressiven Gestaltung der Landschaft erinnert die Komposition an die Werke der Künstler der Donauschule. Zeitgenössische Abdrucke von sämtlichen Graphiken Baldungs sind durchweg von grosser Seltenheit. Erstaunlicherweise sind selbst die zumeist in Augsburg ab der Mitte des 16. Jahrhunderts gedruckten Blätter nicht häufig, zumal in so schönen Exemplaren wie dem hier vorliegenden. Unlike Dürer in his famous engraving (see lot 3028), Baldung does not show the church father engaged in scholarly work in his study, but rather in the wilderness, where he has withdrawn as a herwith for penance. His only companion is his faithful lion, who remains peacefully by his side. The kneeling saint is surrounded by rocky outcrops with trees, while the chapel with house in the background indicates that civilization is not far away. In the dynamic and expressive design of the landscape, the composition recalls the works of the artists of the Danube School. Contemporary impressions of all of Baldung’s prints are consistently of great rarity. Surprisingly, even the sheets mostly printed in Augsburg from the mid-16th century onwards are not common, especially in such beautiful examples as the present one. With a small margin all around, in impeccable condition Erläuterungen / Comments Der Holzschnitt liegt hier in seiner Erstverwendung im Buchzusammenhang auf dem letzten Blatt der deutschen Übersetzung von Scheurls "Sendbriefen" vor, die 1515 bei Peypus in Nürnberg erschienen. Verso erkennt man die lateinische Widmung und Peypus' Impressum und Druckermarke. Die überragende Druckqualität spricht dafür, dass es sich hier doch um die Erstverwendung des Stocks handelt, auch wenn in der Forschung aus stilistischen Gründen immer wieder für eine Datierung in die frühen Nürnberger Gesellenjahre argumentiert wurde. Auch stilistisch zeigt dieses kleine Blatt unseres Erachtens nach bereits die Merkmale von Baldungs reifem Stil und hat nicht das Aussehen eines "Dürer manqué", das den Nürnberger Arbeiten oft anhaftet. The woodcut is presented here in its first use in a book context, on the final leaf of the German translation of Scheurl’s „Sendbriefen“, published in 1515 by Peypus in Nuremberg. On the verso, one can see the Latin dedication, Peypus’ imprint, and printer’s mark. The outstanding print quality suggests that this is indeed the first use of the block, even though scholarship has repeatedly argued for a dating in the early Nuremberg journeyman years for stylistic reasons. Stylistically as well, in our opinion, this small sheet already displays the characteristics of Baldung’s mature style and does not have the appearance of a „Dürer manqué“, which often clings to the Nuremberg works. Das ehemals Albrecht Dürer zugeschriebene Blatt entstand etwa um 1505 als Hans Baldung in der Werkstatt Dürers tätig war. Die Darstellung ist verwandt mit den Dürer-Vorbildern "Die Jungfrau mit der Meerkatze" und der gleichnamigen Darstellung des Nürnberger Meister. Die Art und Weise wie Baldung jedoch Details wie die Köpfe behandelt, vor allem die charakteristische Umsetzung der gewellten Locken, findet in späteren Arbeiten seine Fortsetzung. Der Zusammenhang zu Dürer wird auch durch das im zweiten Zustand angebrachte Dürer-Monogramm evident, das hier noch fehlt.- Ganz ausgezeichneter Druck mit der Einfassung. Hollstein 237 II. - An art-historically important sheet in a somewhat weaker impression, somewhat faint in places, with a small margin around the border line. This has been partially reinforced and supplemented in grey and black pen. The originally white area to the left of the artist's monogram has been filled with grey pen strokes. Fully laid down on backing board. Two small losses retouched in grey pen between the legs of the reclining stable hand. Isolated discreet foxing and minor rubbing. Hollstein 237 II. - Das kunsthistorisch bedeutende Blatt in einem etwas schwächeren, stellenweise etwas auslassenden Druck mit kleinem Rand um die Einfassunslinie. Diese ist mit grauer und schwarzer Feder teils verstärkt bzw. ergänzt. Das ursprünglich weisse Feld links vom Monogramm des Künstlers ist mit grauen Federstrichen gefüllt. Ganzflächig auf einen Unterlagenkarton aufgezogen. Zwischen den Beinen des liegenden Stallknechts zwei kleine, mit grauer Feder retoucherte Fehlstellen. Vereinzelte dezente Stockflecken und kleinere Bereibungen. Insgesamt noch in guter Erhaltung. - Selten.

HANS BALDUNG GRIEN Group of Seven Horses. Woodcut, 1534. 227x337 mm; 9x13⅜ inches, thread margins. Small coat-of-arms watermark. A brilliant, early impression of this extremely scarce woodcut with very strong contrasts and little to no sign of wear, consistent with the earliest impressions of this subject. We have found approximately only 15 other impressions at auction in the past 30 years. According to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, where there is another impression of this woodcut, along with the two other subjects which form the series of three, "In 1534 Baldung [1484/85-1545] made three woodcuts of wild horses in a dark and dense forest, a subject unique to him that had neither precedent nor following. The prints are so idiosyncratic that they must have had strong personal meaning for him, then in about his fiftieth year. Even though the horses and their poses do not look entirely real, they are fascinating in their strangeness and intensity. This [a Group of Seven Horses] is the least overtly sexual of the three works, but it may be guessed that the stallions are fighting for possession of a mare. In the equestrian monument or portrait, in both antiquity and the Renaissance, the horse was deemed a noble creature, a fitting mount for the ruler or leader being glorified, and both Leonardo da Vinci and [Albrecht] Dürer made plans for treatises on the ideal proportions of the horse. Also since antiquity, however, horses--both stallions and mares--were equally reputed to be extraordinarily lustful. Further, in Germanic folklore the horse was associated with evil forces often having to do with witchcraft. The larger subject of these woodcuts, with their violence and pent-up energy, is the power of forces beyond man's understanding or control, specifically the overwhelming strength of the carnal instinct.
