CHARLES THOMAS BALE (England, 1845/49-1925). "Still life and hunting pieces". Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower left corner. Size: 51 x 77 cm; 103 x 78 cm (frame). Charles Thomas Bale specialised in the still life genre. In 1872 he exhibited at both the Royal Academy and the Society of British Artists in Suffolk Street. He was a prolific artist, painting hundreds of still lifes with various combinations of fruit, flowers, birds' nests, game, silver and earthenware jugs. The 19th century was a golden age for still-life painters, and many of them flourished throughout the century, from William Henry Hunt (born 1790) to Catherine Wood (died 1922). Bale shares with them an Arcadian or fairy-tale vision of abundance, in which the larger works arranged extravagant cornucopias of fruit, etc., on shelves or Turkey rugs. His individual work has been specifically compared to that of George Lance (1802-64) and the latter's pupil William Duffield (1816-63), both of whom were associated with Belgium. Bale also painted genre scenes, landscapes and some scenes of social realism; he signed his works with the name "C.T. Bale" or with a monogram. He is represented in the Wakefield Art Gallery, although most of his work is almost entirely in private collections.
