A CHRISTIAN EXHORTACION VNTO CUSTOMABLE SWEARERS. LONDON: JOHN AWDELEY, 1575 8vo (140 x 85mm.), black letter, nineteenth-century brown morocco gilt [probably by Riviere] for Pickering with double fillet border and panel with acorn corner tools and small leaf tools, spine with six compartments, gilt edges, lacking final blank, trimmed with some marginalia shaved, browning, wear to edges and joints of binding PROVENANCE John William Pease, armorial bookplate; Ella Pease, ownership inscription LITERATURE STC 1286; ESTCS100824; John M. King, "John Bale", in Dictionary of Literary Biography, vol. 132: Sixteenth Century Non-Dramatic Writers (Detroit, 1993) NOTE "Yea, so deepely hath this pestilent poyson infected the wits of men, that nothing seemeth pleasaunt vnto them, fresh, or worthy to be laughed at, vnlesse it be ioyned with the blasphemy of Gods holy name." (Myles Couerdale to the Christian Reader) This anonymous polemical work has sometimes been attributed to Miles Coverdale, who was certainly responsible for the preface. However, most modern scholars attribute it to John Bale (STC, Dictionary of Literary Biography). The pamphlet was first published in Antwerp in 1543, when both Bale and Coverdale were in exile in Germany. Included at the end of the pamphlet is a sequence of nine didactic poems, "A short instruction to the world". This edition may have been issued with STC 4053 (see next lot, which is in a matching binding).
